Banhammer - Classic Shard

I hate to resurrect this old beaten into the ground subject of an EA Classic Shard.

However, i used to be sort of against it.

One of the reasons i was against it, was because i didn't want to play a classic shard rampant with scripting resources and cheating.

If they really are slamming the banhammer, and taking care of some old business, i think i've changed my mind.

I'd love to play a fresh, brand new, everyone starts from scratch classic shard rolleyes:

Anyone with me?

I think your description of "cheating" might be a bit vague. I don't think that anyone wants to play a shard that involves "cheating" per se, regardless of the generation that they experienced playing the game, which can also be said for any game, not just UO. Cheating ruins games, and I don't think anyone will contest that.

What we who are for a classic shard want is a shard that includes a classic "ruleset". This means a shard that doesn't have features that were introduced past a certain era, and for most that era was Publish 16.

Now, notice I said "features", not "fixes". Those are very different things in my opinion.

For example, things such as trammel and custom housing, were not "fixes" as much as they were "features" of the game that were introduced to appeal to a certain audience. Whether or not that audience was the player majority makes no difference to the statement.

However, bugs that allowed cheating players to loot other players houses using means that were not intended (water tile, stacking crates, teleport, summon animal etc.) were a "fix". Those, by all means, should be included in the classic shard.

I think it's very important to distinguish the differences.

I like the idea of a classic shard Pre-AOS with some additional ideas implemented, but it would be hard to tear me away from a shard with characters i've played with for over 13 years.

Do you know what was fun?

The Abyss Shard......I can honestly say playing Capture the Flag on that shard was one of my favorite UO experiences ever. Everyone from every shard could come and play.....free for all style.

Hmm, I have an idea for a thread now....thanks!

I understand what a classic shard is lol.

What i meant by cheating was, i don't want them to even bother putting in a classic shard if it has the potential to be a completely ruined economy with scripting resources and duping, like uo has become. I also don't want to see speedhacking around with the pvp capability that i remember =P.

As for leaving my chars behind that i have played for years...

I can deal with it. I can honestly say, i would probably make the exact same char on a classic shard that i first began with when i started uo, dress the same and everything. it would only take a few days to be adjusted =P

I'd like farming Ettins in despice to mean something, haha

I'm not quite sure how those things are specific to a classic shard, or why they would deter you from supporting a classic shard when they are each independent of the shard ruleset, but yes I agree with you.

As I said before, those are all clearly defined as cheating and are all things that I don't think anyone wants to see regardless of the generation of UO player that they are.

NO! Nothing personal but I'm sick to death of hearing about a classic shard. I won't re-hash the arguments but, for the record, I'm wholeheartedly against it. The resources that would be used to alter the code to make it a true classic shard for a minority of the population would be put to better use to fix bugs that are YEARS old or add new content for all.

If there was a classic shard where clothing items had no mods, I bet Cetric would still run around in his flaming purple cape.
