Backpack.

So, I haven't played UO in quite some time, but decided to get back on today. It required re-installing the game as I've since got a new computer/hard drive. It kept giving me error messages about the client when I tried to play, saying it was out of date. So, I went to the site and downloaded the Beta client.

Here is where my question comes in. Is the new beta client the reason the backpack looks the way it does? It has blocks in it for items to sit in, which wouldn't be bad except I can't see half my stuff and things don't stack very easily. If I were to download the classic client would the backpack look the way I'm used to, with the small brown bag that had items in it scattered around? I prefer that over what is showing up now, as it was easier to move items around in. If it's not the client, is there any way to get the old pack look back, or am I just stuck using this new one with the boxes and the pain in the butt methods of storing items?

The Enhanced client has three ways of displaying containers (including your inventory): tiled view (the one you seem to be talking about), the list view, and the "legacy" view.
You should probably try the latter.

I don't understand why you have trouble stacking items or moving them. Could it be the mouse not being accurate on what you click? Some people experience a bad mouse pointing problem.

How do I switch pack view? I've not spotted that option yet, and I looked when I noticed it mentioned somewhere.

As for stacking, it's ok so long as the items are on the screen together, but if I have 1 Sulfurous Ash in the top row of the pack, and another in the 9th row of the pack, I can't grab one and drag it to the other. The rows don't show up together and if there's a way to scroll in the pack while holding an item, I'm dumb and haven't figured it out yet. I would have to slowly move the item up the rows until I could get both Ash on the screen at the same time to finally stack them.

You mean in LIST view? No one really uses that one much. Most use either Legacy or use Grid view. I love Grid View. But to each their own.

To switch you hit the little tiny dot on the top left of the pack. This toggles list & grid.
To switch to Legacy pack, you go to settings > legacy tab > put a check in legacy pack.

Not list view. I'm in grid view. There are several rows of boxes with 5 boxes per row. Only four and a half rows show up at one time, so anything in row 5 and beyond can't be reached without scrolling, and once I scroll down I can't get back to the top while holding the item.

However, now that I have the "Legacy" container, I'm good to go. ^_^ I don't have problems with the other changes, the pack was the only thing that bugged me. So, I'm glad it's still an option.

BTW, one feature you may like of the enhanced client is that you can right-click items in the corpses of your kills, and they are automatically looted.
