Attacking Merchantmen

I guess this is the de facto page for all things Pirate related?

Can someone tell me if attacking a Merchantman is similar to attacking a pirate - i.e. use cannon then board once disabled?

And what is the loot like - anything that can only come from looting merchants?

it works similar to the pirates. you will need to scuttle the ship in order to board it. the loot is mostly higher end resources like barbed leather and valorite ingots. however, the future patch will make it so white cloth dye tubs come as loot in the chests.
