Because to some, gathering stuff and being "uber" is not the end-all, be-all of the game.

At this point in the game, wait for SA and KR to get published and patched respectively.

Until it happens.... stick to PvM... ;P I know I can't follow my own advice so I get crunched by the Eternal Gimplate(Necro Mage, EO/Para spam).
At least the 2 cheating archers on my server got banned I think.

Now to fix Omen.

Because I haven't desired to sink the time into the game to work a full out template, buy all the items for it, and then have some bug screw everything up (lose all items for example) or the developers decide to nerf that template just because some person complained about it.

I have 2 friends who have lost way over 100 mil in items due to bugs. I simply don't desire to drop that much into a character only to lose it.

Only play a few hours a week, play on multiple shards, the most fun is the early part of developing a character not the latter-end grind. Too much stuff in the game who needs all this uber loot anyhow. Nah - I'm a merry putterer ....

Because my life doesn't hinge on UO. I don't spend every waking hour of the day logged in.

Pssst, this is where you come back with, "I play at work"..and we're all supposed to believe it.....Pssst, this is where the rest of you "I play at work too" folks are supposed to chime in.....

And some of us just like playing our original char, have all the others created, but not fleshed out. And high powered uber items?? I'm still ecstatic to have an LRC suit LOL.

Got a boomstick and orni selling magincia stuff, got all I need =)
Rather spend the time hanging out and chatting with the friends, than farming serious gold, or farming serious arties...I already have a job!

And some of us, for 10 years, have given away quite a lot of stuff too, since we dont see the need to fullly outfit 10 chars.

Because I don't have a "toon" otherwise I'd be playing Toontown.

Secondly, each character does something different, some are more focused and advanced than others based on the desire to play a given character at a given time.

I have a fisherman that can take out the serps he needs to to get SOSs, maps and nets.

I have a miner that can tackle ore elems if I want to use a garg pick.

I have my "main" character which is a rather advanced Bushido/Pally/Macer and a secondary melee character in the works as a Bushido/Pally/Swords/Alchemist which is about 80% "done" in terms of stats/skills.

I enjoy playing the templates that I find work for me, I tend to dislike "cookie cutter" uber-templates as a rule. If I find a high quality template, all well and good, but I don't copy mine from what someone posts on Jack's Uber Pwnage website.

The first 4 years I played I thrived at being the richest person arround. Got boring and tiring. I've played the last three years living out of my bank box. More of a challenge for me to find different ways of survival then just having everything you need at the drop of a dime.

Do you have a GM beggar?

I have one on Siege and I am close to having one on Sonoma. If you don't have one after playing for 10 years you have serious issues.

1. Uber does not fit my character.
2. If I had everything, there would be nothing left to play for?
3. I only play for a couple hours a week, tops. That's enough time for only one peerless run sometimes.
4. I had a long down time (6 years)
5. I tend to give things away to people who need it more than I do (money, items, etc)
6. It's hard to gain uber lewt in a story telling/tavern night. But I have gained friends and stories. Do they count?

Because some people choose to set their own goals in the game and are happy with achieving them instead of measuring themselves by someone else's preconceived standards.

I agree that the definition of "uber" seems to be limited to completed combat characters and sets and that this is a limited view. One of the best things about UO is that I can do so many things, sometimes with scrub characters. I do ingenious maps with my guttersnipe treasure hunter who beyond a few EVs is worthless in combat. This character can do the locks and cartography part of t-hunting, but was really designed to need a group of combat characters to help her out. It is pointless for a crafter to have an uber set when what they really need is a set with tools appropriate to their craft (mining gloves, talismans, super mana regen for scribing, etc.).

As for the money issue, I think people still get stuck on the whole "the only way to make money is repetitive monster bashing or buying it." This is incorrect. While crafting isn't always lucrative, resource gathering can be, though sadly scripters have an advantage. Merchanting is a great way to make money. I noticed that there are so many ways to make money in game if people have a little creativity. Time isn't always a restriction either since a vendor can handle most of the transactions.

Yeah face it, resources are always going to sell and be a way to make money. It leads to the creation of those "uber" armor, weapon, and books. But "uber" is all realative.

Because some of us play the game not to get rich... I never had more than 10 mill. But then, I often play alone, I don't use my crafter, and I prefer to hunt the monsters fun to fight, not the lucrative ones.

Add that up and that's why I'm always a broke sucka.

I perfectly understand that. The only reason I bring it up is because in some of the events recently these same people who play fisherman and beggars complain that only the uber toon/char/avatar whatever, can get all the leet loot. Just saying if you choose to play a crappy char after many years of playing, then don't complain when your crappy toon/char/avatar/pixel man can't get nothing good.

I never have a ton of gold on hand, mostly because of the old rule:

"The more you make the more you spend"

As for being uber that depends on who you ask. 1 minute I'm a uber leet cool dude. The next I'm a no skill trammy noob.

The more I make the more I make that stacks on it. It's easier to make money faster when you have a 50 mil bank as opposed to 5 mil. The rich should be getting richer if they know what they're doing.

Whenever I make some gold Ill spend it on some item that i need/want. I dont usally have cash on hand either because I spend it on stuff I would like to have. That being said, I have alot of cash invested in rares/armors/weps/castles/other items. Do I feen Im uber, not really. Do I feel like I have alot of wealth, no not really. But I play to enjoy the game anyways, not rich. All though ,money does help i guess lols.

I have played since beta, first few years were just having a blast, learning the "world" and back then going to bucs den to "face the reds" which I later became... hanging out with them, getting the closest house to the bank, ... never the less it became a barren waste land later on ...

Spent the next 4ish years gathering everything and selling all I could on ebay to make a buck, (mill was 10-20 bucks then) .. was awsome but then UO became well not a game anymore... rather a "job" and it took all the fun out of it... I stopped doing the "game item to cash" bit .. and the game well turned back into just that a "game" which was nice... moved shards ... started over on "new shards" made more friends... lost friends in r/l to death, which was a horrible thing "knowing" them for years in game...

Latley I just log in and chat with ol buddies, (many which are playing other games) but ICQ keeps us together. I am a hand full of others still play though, off and on .. take a few month break here and there... but always come back to UO ... (or play UO and other games on the side) ... I for one always keep my UO account on my credit card ... it's an expence figured into my monthly income haha... I have gone over a year without playing but that 12.99 just keeps ticking away (times 2-3) .. :D

I have done the "template of the week" cookie cutter game.. thanks to soul stones and having every skill 120 on them (making my main whatever at will) ... (he has ate all the p.s. you can now) .. yeah I have mules and whatnot but always play just my main .. hell took me 3-4 years of playing before I even started a second char heh...

This game has its points... fun times, bad times... "clicks" you have to get into or rebel against... but it's just how you play the game to make it fun... if you take it as a job, it's a job and looses it's fun... if you play for the "game" and just to have fun... slaying some stuff for gold, or just going around helping people.. or whatever you "like" it's fun.

I always have been a pack rat though, and my house keeps getting bigger in order to hold my "stuff" .. at one point I had two side by side castles just to hold my loot. Condensed though after a few xshards and "spring cleaning" .. (before the turn in of course haha) .. now just a keep in the swamp, which I call my home now for years.

UO is what you make it.

its amazing to me when i hear people say they're never had more than 10m... i mean its so easy to make gold these days... i dont even try to and i make it... buying gold to me is pretty lame, almost 8 yrs playing and i never bought gold, earn it yourselves!

I play to have fun.
I started just before trammel came into our world.
I do not like having vendors.
Heck I would need some thing to sell :)
I spent months in Doom when OAS came out and never got anything.

I have all types of characters and none of them I would call "Uber"
I can handle my own against most of the mobs.
But that is about it.

I guess my question would be why do you have uber toons and more gold than you know what to do with?

I pretty much agree with the OP.

Though most of the people I hear saying their poor aren't they just have different idea of priority. Someone in glacial hair dye claiming they have no insurance for example.

I usually just ignore them.

Anywho, why in the flyin %^$# Do folks spam poison, and cast para fields. Is there no honor left? Oh to answer the question, I get my enjoyment solely from PvP, and a few of the bigger events. So i sorta gotta have all my Uberfantastacular stuffs to compete with the gimplates. And im Broke cuzz I spend gold like my ole lady spends money. Buying weapons in UO is like me buying tools for work, just gotta have it.

Been playing for almost 10 years now, when I started I didn't need more than 10k to completely outfit myself. I kept a 50k buffer in the bank for emergencies and then stopped looting. I rarely ever needed to buy anything back then, so for years I never had more than that 50k in the bank. After AoS and even now I have friends that can craft whatever I need for free. Any uberish items I get that I don't want or need I just give away to people in the guild I'm in. I know for a fact, that if I pooled all my ready cash from all 3 of my accounts, I'd have less than a one million gold. And I don't ever remember complaining about not being able to get any of that stuff.. especially if it was neon.
