was sitting at work reminiscing about the old days.
reminded myself i need to work my new thief up in stealing.
remembered years ago when you could load a pack mule up with 100 pitchforks and start stealing them, then when you got a gain you dumped all the pitchforks and just used that one over and over and over and you could go all the way to 120 like that.
might sometimes need to reset and get another pitchfork but it usually worked all the way to 120.

what changed in the game that this no longer works?
anyone remember?
or does it still work and im just silly for not trying, haha

I never tried pitchforks, but dye tubs, yes: load up your backpack, a friend does likewise, and EZ Macros to do random stealing.

it was dye tubs as they are 10 stones and were beyond your lifting weight so you gained.

I've trained it more recently, and I'm lazy. I don't bother with hauling a pack horse around. I just take a bag of apples and pears to Bucc's. Put the bag on the floor and steal the fruit, adding an apple and a pear to the stack as I progress.
The only draw back is remembering to pick the bag up when you finish - but it's not exactly a hardship to buy a new bag and fruit to fill it.

The barrels on the walls of Brit Castle. Pack horse is just there to haul all the loot to a vendor or home for the smith to recycle metal.

That trick was with capping your skill with jewelry, and gaining a real skill point...u could gain over and over on the same item till u reached your cap.

The 8x8 jewelry trick was great. Something I wrote about it:

Once upon a time, the Knights of the Round Table were dismayed at the long hours for slow skill gain. Then Sir Launcelot mentioned hearing rumors of a new training method called "eight by eight" that promised much faster skill gain...

ARTHUR: How does it, um -- how does it work?

LAUNCELOT: I know not, my liege.

ARTHUR: Consult the URL of UO Powergamers!

BROTHER MAYNARD: UO Powergamers, chapter two, verses nine to twenty-one.

SECOND BROTHER: And lEEt d00d raised his spellcasting hands up on high, saying, 'O Lord, bless me and telleth me how to learn to cast this Thy holy energy bolt that, with it, I mayest blow mine enemies to tiny bits in Thy mercy.' And the Lord did grin, and eventually the PK did mightily loot his foes' black pearl and bloodmoss and mandrake root and garlic and ginseng --

MAYNARD: Skip a bit, Brother.

SECOND BROTHER: And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou practice the skill on a Holy Spot in the middle of the ocean. Then, shalt thou sail forward tiles equal to eight. No more. No less. Eight shalt be the number of tiles thou shalt sail forward, and the number of tiles of thy sailing shall be eight. Nine tiles forward shalt thou not sail, for it verily will ****eth up thy run, nor either sail thou seven tiles, excepting that thou then proceed to eight. Ten is right out. Once the tile eight, being the eighth tile, be reached, then, practice again thy skill. And after thou reachest legendary six times over, casteth thou many energy bolts and flamestrikes and other spells towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.'

MAYNARD: Amen.

KNIGHTS: Amen.

ARTHUR: Right! One!... Two!... Stop at nine!

GALAHAD: Eight, sir!

ARTHUR: Eight!

OMG !!! ROTFLMAO!! It Monty Python meets UO FTW!!! I love it!!! *XOXOXO* The zog historian! TY for the laugh I needed that! I was sitting here struggling over a college Algebra problem and decided to timeout and read stratics! Well the laughter worked I'm back at it. BTW, anyone wanna solve center-radius form equations for me? (grumbles about circles, Xs and Ys).

Quadratics are your friend! Not to get too off-topic, but before tablets, my friends and I loved our graphing calculators. We'd do things like finding the fastest way to draw a circle or other shape, however much memory was used. Like with so many things in algebra (physics too), remember the basic equation, and the rest falls into place. r²=(x–a)²+(y–b)², where a is the horizontal location of the center, and b is the vertical location of the center.

Unless they changed something you can also gain stealing from a backpack on the ground, which was a lot of fun.

On a side note, I never liked perma gray. I guess that's the importance of the all too obvious thief disguise kits.
