Anyone else tired of the "luck" attribute?

I was thinking of logging in and go kill a few monsters with my melee character. I wondered why i haven't played him in such a long time.. then as i typed my password in and pressed connect, I went "DOH! It's because i should be playing my tamer with maxed out luck!"

Then i cringed my eyebrows at this injustice, my soul screamed out from the depths of darkness, there was only one thing that resounded over and over.....

"TO THE FORUMS!"

To the dear designers of ultima online,
I'm tired of having to play my tamer, not because it's easier, which it is; not because it's safer, which it is; but because of the overabundance of worthless loot drops in this game.

Overabundance of worthless loot drops.. that's right. How does luck come into all this? Luck MAKES the overabundance of worthless loot drops, worth inspecting. It's still trash most of the time. It still takes me minutes to glance over each armor or weapon piece, counting how much the intensities are, which is good for which situation(PVM or pvp?), which is good for which character(Hmm the sampire? Or the paladin?)

Without luck, the overabundance of worthless loot drops is just that... a pile of stinking crap that i have to sort through in hopes of 1 good item.

My warrior:
Normal suit: 485 luck
10th anni statue: 500 luck
Perfection: 1000 luck
Total: 1985 luck.

My tamer:
Normal suit: either 300 or 700 luck (swap out for etoile set for easy hunts)
Statue: 500 luck
Total: 800-1200 luck

Warrior wins.

And for the sake of discussion, the rest of me:
suit: 0 luck
statue: 0 luck (no point at such a low level)
Other players in party: varying luck levels
Total: piggybacking my luck on other top damage dealers.

Now what you really should be asking for is a complete loot overhaul where you don't get an overabundance of worthless drops.

The idea of luck isn't entirely bad. However, to really get a good chance of getting anything good you need to have a lot of luck. I don't have a lot of gold, so I can't afford to get enough luck to make hunting worth-while at the same time getting good resist from the armor. What they need to do is put a dang cap on luck and have it at a reasonable level. Such as maybe 300 or whatever. Luck up in the 1000's is just ridiculous

i can get to 1700 + with out really trying but find once you get over 1000 or so it seems to not matter or even make it worse (like its broke and anything over XXX makes it go down instead of up)
i find for my archer bard
the 400 luck rings+horselord +storm grip = 650 toss in statue boost and i am set in all 70 with good mods at the 1000 mark i seek

Me, I'd personally welcome seeing magic items being rare.

I often wonder what Mage Manufacturing Firm is cranking out so bloody many crummy magic items. "How's the production of those 1 Luck rings coming this quarter, Leoric?"

Probably in the same league as the Britannian Underwater Footwear Factory.

Back in the day, most of the weapons you found on monsters were just normal weapons. Nowadays, it's rare when the item is NOT magical.

A few points.

1. I don't like Luck either. Never have. Plenty of other advantages to PvMing with a Tamer. However, I'm also used to it and don't care much...Plenty of ways for me to make money despite not having a Tamer, and with the money, I buy items I need, be they obtained via crafting or use of Luck. So I don't know that it'd be worth the manufacturer's time to change it when there's so much else out there...You don't need Luck to get a Replica, or (these days anyway) a Doom Artifact. Or a set piece, it seems.

2. To Farsight: The analogy you present is false. Not only do many Tamers have far higher Luck than yours, but not every warrior is a Samurai and thus not all of us have the option of using Perfection.

3. Altering Luck without altering loot wouldn't seem to do all that much good...Plenty of high-Luck types still complain about loot!

So yeah....While I have always, since AoS which introduced Luck, disliked Luck, I'm not so sure it'd be cost-effective to change it now.

Agreed 100%, I have avoided luck because frankly, I can go put on magic find gear and play Diablo 2 to grind gear for free. Being forced to choose between more consistent good drops and.... anything else... kinda sucks, frankly. A better balance would be as you say, cap luck at a relatively low number, so that adding luck while still having okay gear (and not hiding behind a dragon or being gimped for other types of combat) is not a necessity to play around with luck effectively.

Hunting with a luck suit is really only possible on a tamer because you have the pet do everything.

If I were going to do something about this (I just came up with this idea a second ago), I would create a new socketed item (probably earrings). It would have the same number of slots as luck items you can equip (10 I think). You can drop luck gems which have different durations into the earrings to power up the luck it provides. For example one gem could give 140 luck for a period of 24 hours of play time. The timer only stops when not equipped or in your backpack. The earrings are going to be the only thing you need to wear for luck.

"Legacy" pieces can have their luck removed and turned into the special luck gems. They no longer count towards your luck total.

I'd prefer if luck meant more than "better loots, maybe".
You could be the "luckiest" person in the world, but it doesn't mean a thing outside of rummaging around inside a lukewarm meat bag.

I don't really pvm but if im honest, I would if there wasn't luck..

I never go hunting because I don't have luck, so there isn't a point anymore.

I could log on my tamer who has luck, but meh I don't like playing her

I always liked luck and still do but luck has been greatly nerfed where it hardly seems to makes a differnce anymore i wish luck would be un nerfed either way leave luck in the game. my mage, necro, and archer uses luck sometime so it is not just for tamers.

I, as a swordsman, am pretty ambivalent about luck. My only real looting concern is that Miasmas die faster than i can loot through all their trash.

Can we get an option to only see items on corpses that spawn with a certain intensity on a certain amount of properties? Picking through trash is tedious.

Well, my mage had about 200 luck and got a ring with +15 taming and +13 lore off a lesser hiryu, now tell me that's bad loot. You guys are just fighting the wrong stuff, stop killing ettins and ogre lords and fight something that gives decent loot.

Oh, also, what does perfection have to do with luck?

...

WHile steps have been taken to bring Luck more easily to melee templates, the BASIS of Luck (i.e. more risk via lower mods = more rewards in loot) completely FAILED due to the fact that since inception, the templates that best used the mods were those that were the least outright risky to play (since they were rarely if ever involved in actual physical combat).

Personally because of this, I would like to see it removed (though it is too late to do so since so many items are now based on the mod).

But then by the same token, there are SO many aspects of the current PvM and loot system that need to be reworked that I don't think you can do one without doing all of it at once from actual PvM combat to loot drops to mods and intensities.

Personally, I would SLOW DOWN PvM significantly so that it's not a two to three hit system and instead acted more like older days when it took a bit of doing to bring down most creatures, then I'd drop the sheer numnber of items dropped so that a magic item drop at all would be significant in itself (thus increasing the significance of shipwrecks and T-chests), finally, I'd put every mod on an up to five level tiered system (instead of the wide open system we have now) so that there could be better cohesion in item mods as well as more significance to seeing a mod on an item itself (i.e. no Luck 1 or Damage increase 3%, etc), then rebalance them within those tiers.

As an example, to bring it back to Luck, you'd find items with 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 Luck respectively instead of the 1 - 100 all inclusive numbers seen now.

Maybe even go as far as creating a prefix/suffix system where the items would be named based on two of the top mods accordingly.

IN addition to what Dermott said which sounds good, i'd add charges to all the hit effects as well.. make it so they only work for so long with the special effects before you need a replacement.
