I went to google today and the background was black.

Clearly all our fiddling with blackrock last night has corrupted google's website.

Heh... that would be a more honest explanation than the full of BS one they gave.

I love when Google does something different with their page.

I do believe it was the blackrock though... I think perhaps Google had been hording it.

It's like the anti-smoking commercials... I'm a non-smoker but damned if most of them don't make me want to light one up.

*imagines a despairing Kronos sitting at his desk when suddenly inspiration strikes, he calls up google on the crystal ball and enters "blackrock" into the search field*

Hooli: Earth Hour has been a long time coming (city where I live is going to turn off all the street lights for an hour) ... google is just having some fun because a few months back a crank got a lot of press by calculating the "cost" of google's background color choice since it is being displayed by hundreds of millions of monitors each day.

It's for Earth Hour on today March 29th.

"Cities all over the world will be turning off the lights for one hour tonight to bring about social awareness to pollution and global warming. Show your support and join millions of others all over the world by turning out your lights tonight."

That was just some quick thinking when all of a sudden lots of stuff got messed up and no one could figure out what caused it. Turns out blackrock use in UO is impacting lots of RL stuff in a different dimension.

I can only hope someone rents 100 spotlights and uses them for the solid hour to help offset the stupidity.

I have a strip of flexible LED lights on the underside of the shelves of my desk... my keyboard stays lit!

LED lights FTW!

well... sometimes the great measure people go to with concern for the environment don't make a whole lot of sense.

What breaks down plastic? UV... Naturally, the best solution for disposing of all the plastic we produce is to just throw it out in places where it will be exposed to lots of sunlight. What do we do instead? We bury it!!! Clearly, we should be just throwing it on the ground.

I'm joking btw... I'm not really a "pave the rainforest" kind of guy.

I have been closely watching LED technology. I love it even though it's barely practical so far. LED lightbulbs have more than doubled in lumen output in 2 yrs. I bought a first generation LED lightbulb. Big surprise... it's not very good
I am watching and waiting, though.

I've started to get some myself... mainly only usable in "cluster" type of lighting and expensive on the outset, but I like them MUCH better than the mercury based fluorescents that the envrios are hyping (and which will in time be banned as a health hazard I predict).

LEDs are the future from what I'm seeing.

In Australia, Oceania Shard, Earth Hour was due to finish at the time Stage One of the Event was due to start.

Hubby and I were poised in front of our glowing computer screens, surrounded by flickering candles.

I am hoping EA will plant a few trees on Oceania's behalf. If the event was not on we were going to go a step further and turn off all appliances for Earth Hour as well.

Also, it's nice to be able to say that I dropped the wattage of lighting in the master bathroom alone from about 450 watts down to 30 watts which by itself will have more impact than this "hour of caveman-like darkness" that some people are about to be involved in.

It has an impact on my electricity bill which is FAR more important to me than unproven pseudo-science.
