An honest question

Hello my Catskillian friends!

Since our wonderful devs put the level six arcane circle in at the WBB I have been leaving two high level spell weavers logged in there almost all the time. I was doing this to make it easier for the spellweaving community to reach their level six focus. I have two accounts with weavers on both and I only play a little bit a day so most of the day they can just sit there. People going in and out of the bank keep them refreshed so they don't time out (though sometimes it is dead enough they do time out but when I notice that I just log them back in).

Last night when I went to bed I made sure the two weavers were situated and refreshed so they would last as long as possible. This morning when I woke up, one of them was dead. Given that neither are guilded my guess is that someone released a tame and it was able to poison the one character before it got itself guard whacked.

I don't mind dying, it is part of the game. Neither of these characters that are logged in have any fame either, all that was lost was a little bit of insurance money. However, it got me thinking and brought me to the following question:

Is it offensive to leave my characters there? Is it not really helpful but more of a nuisance seeing two logged in but afk characters at wbb? I truly meant to do something to help the community, not hinder it. If the general consensus is that I am being a pain in the bottom by doing this, I'll no longer do it. However, if most find this useful and this was the work of someone just trying to be a griefer then I'll continue to do it and if I occasionally lose some insurance money no big deal.

Please, let me know your opinions.

Thank you kindly,

~Podolak

Here's my 2 cents for what it's worth.

I can go to Luna any time of any day and see people logged in and AFK. If they don't bother me, one at WBB trying to at least help others isn't going to bother me either.

Yes.

Our characters time out after 20 minutes of in-activity (I think it is 20 minutes) but when another player pops onto the screen, it resets that 20 minute counter. So as people go in and out it helps keep my characters logged in.

It is 20 minutes, but the timer does not always work. Just last night I left my mage logged in at my house in malas. Fairly secluded, I've never seen my neighbors there, and it's not near any hunting grounds. Very quiet area. I went to get a drink, decided to make some dinner, after that I got distracted playing with the dog, ended up taking her for a walk, long story short, came back about 45 minutes later, my mage is still logged in. So, unless the cat decided to give UO a shot (which I doubt, he's more interested in the birds nesting in the tree outside the bedroom window right now), my mage sat unattended, alone, not moving or speaking for 45 minutes. No auto logout.

I want to sincerely thank you for your service! I use it every day, and it is very much appreciated. Sorry that you got killed. A released pet is the only thing I could think of to have caused this. I wouldn't even say that someone inteded to get you killed. People hang out afk in New Haven and Luna all the time.

Please continue with your service!!

The reason you do not log out is any time a Name appears on your screen it refreshes the timer. So in your situation I would have to guess a bird or wandering monster/creature came close enough to your house to be seen by your character.

And Thank you very much Podolak for having those 2 logged in there! I also use them from time to time!

That makes sense I guess. For some reason I always thought only players coming on and off screen would refresh you. Didn't realize npc mobiles could do it too.

Wow, I have passed on the urge to run up there and cast arcane circle with your characters probably 20 times because I only have a GM spellweaver and was afraid it would lower your bonus. I don't even know if it does work that way, but I didn't want to risk it. So thanks, I'll do it now!

Also, it was probably a tame-release. Are you in negative karma on either? Other ways you could have died but I am not sure if they are possible:

If someone drops blackrock at your feet then casts Armageddon, does it hurt everyone in a radius or just the caster? (Va'lis, do you know?)

Did you have on any equipment that lowers your health over time? Had to be a griefer if not.

Arcane Circle works with people that are within 20 skill points of your skill. So if you have 100, then you can circle with anyone that has 80 to 120 skill.

Actually the character that died is a necro stealth weaver so his karma is negative, that aspect works then.

Yes! Don't refrain from casting Arcane Circle, they are there to help anyone. Whatever focus they have doesn't matter. The spellweaver I actually play is on the same account as Bleddyn so when I need a focus on him I just log Bleddyn out, log him in and wait for the lvl6 to happen, which happens fairly quick anyway.

I am glad to see so many people are actually benefiting, this is good news!

Well you are all very welcome but lets not make this a "thank you Podolak" thread. Podolak is a mean spirited, evil, malicious, vile creature who should be avoided at all costs!

It is great though that so many are benefiting. I had no idea I really was beginning to wonder if I was just being a pain.

I have appreciated the extra bodies being there, sorry something happened to cause one to die though. I know there are several things that ping the server and can keep you logged in. Someone talking in guild chat, people or even animals appearing on screen and having their names displayed does a server check to keep you logged in for hours at a time. I have an isolated house in the mountains of Malas and the ice snakes can keep me logged in till someone kills them.

Oh the dying is no problem. I have died for much less over the years! And with nothing lost but a few K in insurance money it really wasn't a big deal.

thanks for leaving your chars there. although i;m not a spellweaver, it is nice to still see people willing to help others (with nothing expected in return) :)

I'm not sure why your character died, but i have noticed several unicorns and cu sidhes released at the britain and moonglow gates today, so I'm wondering if one of those wandered in to the city. if you don't have sufficient karma then i think its possible that one of them attacked you.

i dont have much in the way of items, but if there is anything you need replaced, let me know and i'll see if i can help you out.

thanks

miriel
