Alone in the Night

Dramora

Journeyman
Stratics Veteran
Stratics Legend
Nights were the hardest.

Although she hadn’t been at her Yew home for long, the sounds of the trees and animals there were familiar, welcoming. Almost like a warm hug. The sounds here were different, harsher. Perhaps in time, she could get used to them, however, she had no intentions on staying here long enough for that to happen.

He said she could go anywhere she wanted, as long as she returned here. There was no doubt in her mind that Seska would be forced to hurt her, or someone she loved if she disobeyed. She caught glimpses of the wolf occasionally. Mostly her yellow eyes in the shadows, ever watching; waiting. Perhaps hoping that this time she could rip out Leela’s throat.

She opened the door to the small cabin and stepped out into the darkness. Since he’d moved her to this place, she no longer even had Clive to talk to. She was truly alone.

When her eyes adjusted to the dark, she walked down the path and stopped at the stable. It was empty. None of her animals were there to greet her. To her, there was nothing sadder than an empty stable.

She sat on the ground, leaning her back against the fence, and looked up at the night sky. There was a slight chill to the air, and she shivered slightly. She knew she should sleep, but she couldn’t sleep here. This was not her home.

Penrose came to see her every day so far, although she hadn’t been his prisoner for long. He tried to make sure she was comfortable, and had everything she needed. Everything except her freedom. Even a beautiful prison is still a prison.

He was an enigma. He seemed willing to answer her questions, up to a certain point. However, every question she asked him, brought at least three more to her mind. He only had patience for a limited amount, then he left as abruptly as he appeared.

It was never in her nature to turn her back on anything in need, and even under these less than desirable circumstances, she felt compelled to help him. If there was ever a soul in need it was him. Perhaps this was why she was why she was driven to follow her sister back to Yew.

There was so much anger and hatred within the man. It poured out of him like water from a pitcher. But way down deep within, almost hidden was something else. He might not even know it was there, but she could feel it.

Dramora always told her she could see even the smallest bit of good, in even the most evil creature. Leela always believed there was good in everyone, some people just needed help to find it.

Penrose seemed focused on revenge. But revenge is never a reason for life. Once your revenge is satisfied, there is nothing, just an empty shell. That was no way to live.

A lone howl split the night, and snapped her attention back to where she was.

She absently brushed away the tears that chased each other down her cheeks, and shivered again. It had gotten colder since she’d been sitting here. It was time to move back inside.

Yes, nights were definitely the hardest.
