An archer shoots at me from the woods.
Dang. I get hit. Nice damage. Nice battle.

I close in on him or her.
We are now in sword range.
I can actually smack him in the back of the head, hes so close.

Why wouldnt this happen with a bow or related.

We are fighting hand to hand distance, melee.

*he pulls out arrow*
I snatch it

*he pulls out arrow again*
I snatch it

Still fighting hand to hand distance

*he pulls out arrow*
I grab his bow string and dont let go
I smack him with my sword

Just wondering why archery works with 1 or 2 spaces. I think all the archery tweaking isnt really needed if you decrease its effectiveness in tile to tile fighting.

I have a warrior that has archery and swords.
He should use archery as range attack
and swords for hand to hand

Just wondering why he can stand with monsters on him and shoot arrows?

Maybe devs could look at weapon dimensions a bit differenlty?

[/ QUOTE ] That sounds fair...then gave archers the ability to shoot while moving without having to use mana to do the special attack.

Im all for a skilled archer to shoot and move.
Just if I close in, less effect.

Creating skills to be a range fighter would be great.

A ranged attacker would be great

100 in range attacking/includes horse skills
100 in weapon choice (throwing axes, spears, whatever or archery)

Soon we will play with cyber gloves, head gear and virtual weapons and spells...

we'll need stamina, endurance, strenght and agility to be able to do all the combos allowed... while doing a strange ballet on our living room that we will turn into our gaming room... with a war cyber rug that will record and react to every movement we make...

Just wait... 150 more years and we'll have it all!

In a real life battle situation only a fool (or Legolas
) would continue to use a ranged weapon within melee weapon range. The only fault I see in your idea is that you are trying to bring logic and common sense to the world of UO. Cut it out already sheesh.

I think archery should be less effective at point blank range. Just like guns are less effective than swords at point blank range (so are bows btw).

In UO they do more damage at 3-4 range than more... there goes the realism!

I always think it less than useful to try to resort to any kind of realism when discussing UO issues. We have a 'world' with magic spells, dragons and pixies etc so trying to base an argument on reality seems specious.

I gather you find a bladed warrior at some disadvantage to archers. Personally I find it the other way around as the blade wielder can also have parry and so be practically unkillable by an archer.

There are plenty of archers now its true but then I also see plenty of mages, necros and dexxers too. PvP is about as balanced as its been for as long as I have been PvPing, with no really bad imbalances. Oh, I'd like to see pet balls, 4/6 casting and parry taken down a notch but I'll live without them.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well remember. UO is a suspension of reality, I agree. But in the game, game play should have some logic. And there is always room to improve.

I see the swordsman at a distance and shoot an arrow at him.

I hit him. Good damage

He rushes towards me. I shoot again. Another hit, decent damage.

He's close enough to swing at me now.

I take out an arrow.
He grabs it.

I take out another arrow and stab him with it. Then beat him down with my bow and choke him with it's string.

*It's fantasy, roll with it.

Possibly as long as you dont get the fireball effect and velocity while stabbing.

TOO much banging and whacking on this thread now that I read it.

I guess it needs to be locked.

I think that all bows should be able to be used as a bludgeoning instrument at close range, but with a penalty in all skill/damage calculations. That would add logic without being unbalancing. And since they're wood, their durability would be 2x as likely to take a hit when used this way.

The point is, as most have figured out.... It's a fantasy game.

Explain to me how 3 twigs on the ground can bring my FULL SPEED WARHORSE to a complete halt?

Explain how someone holding a WAND (imagines Harry Potters twig... NO not that one) DISMOUNTING me from a swamp DRAGON?

Explain how a mage can do ANYTHING while he's separating specific reagents from a bag, saying words of magic, and weaving his hands to produce the spell, WHILE HOLDING A BOK AND SHIELD?

It's fantasy. Keeping some realism in it keeps it grounded, making it playable releases it into the air. Finding the balance, well thats really the trick now isn't it.

If you get hit in the chest with a shot from a heavy xbow , you dont run no where , if u get smacked in the head with a hally you run no where... but it makes for such short fights......
