back to UO.

Lotta eye candy but gameplay was a real letdown.

Diablo is pretty much hack-n-slash or cast spell - cast spell - cast spell... rinse and repeat. It has NO replay value for me, but you know, it is still fun for a short diversion. But one more week and I'll be done with both Normal and Hell levels.

Still nothing out there to compare to UO.

It is fun for short diversions, and it is very nice looking, definite eye candy in places, but I found myself focusing too much on items at times, which is what Diablo is still all about. I do like the changes to the skills (doing away with points) and I really like the co-op play.

Every 4-5 levels, I would pop into the auction house, sell the 10 best things I had available for sale, and then spend time going through auctions......looking to buy things to ramp up my DPS to save time. Yeah, wasting time in the auction house to find things to save time. I do like the AH, and truthfully it saves time.

I will say though that things were improved over the previous game as far as being able to whip through the content in a rapid fashion, at least on normal, will try it on nightmare or hardcore later on. I have not broken out a spreadsheet yet, unlike some of my friends. If I reach the point where I'm looking at a spreadsheet or online guides in order to raise DPS another 500 points or something, then I'm done with the game. So far I haven't even had to refer to any websites.

If you hate item properties in UO, this is not your game.

The new Diablo interface in some strange way reminds me of Pinco's UI.

I liked that it shows the DPS of any weapon right up front, and you don't have to do any of those calculations. If you want the details, there is a window you can open for that information too. When you mouse over an item in inventory, you are shown both that item and your currently equipped item. The is one of the best/friendliest inventory screens I've ever seen.

Diablo is very item based, but very easy to sort through.

Maybe because Pinco's UI gives you the option to display Diablo-like health and mana orbs? lol the Diablo series was definitely an influence on the kit.

I find it strange none of you are talking about how DIII is, in fact, in the third dimension. DII was grid-based, like UO. That has to be enjoyable, no?

I won't look into DIII until they add arenas (PvP), but even then, I did it all in DII. PvMing to LVL 99 and getting the best items again? Been there, done that. Also seems like the game is "too easy," from what my friends told me during Beta and from what you all are saying now. I guess nothing changed.

Now's a good time to note the original Dragon Age is under $20. Definitely worth it.

I loved Diablo 2 so much except for the fact that if you don't play/touch the game for 3 months the characters on your account would expire :sad4:

Personally, I can't stand the Diablo health/mana orbs.

The 3D graphics adds nice effects while traveling, seeing things moving in the background. The overall effect is very nice.

But as your friends told you, compared to UO it is too easy - the very same thing I was thinking this weekend while running through the Abyss looking for stealables. The average dungeon in UO is more difficult than almost any of Diablo. I used one restore health potion in all of Act I, only one potion so far in Act II, only had to run to safety once. You only get in trouble if you let yourself get overrun with mobs. There is very very little strategy at all to any of the combats.

I would still recommend playing DIII just for the graphics, the UI, and the awesome storytelling. I think UO could learn something from the storytelling in Diablo and Skyrim. Overall crafting and game play in DIII... meh, doesn't hold a candle to UO.

I remember back when I played diablo 2 "hammerdins" could really do everything and use "veangence" without ever touching a potion really. Reaching block cap and using enigma runeword to teleport all over... The game was/is very easy to beat. it got to the point where I was just playing to pvp in act 1 or give free "RUSHES".

This isn't necessarily true. The first Diablo game was released prior to UO and the franchise has remained true to form in all 3 games with some evolution. UO's item properties and their involvement in many aspects of gameplay, most notably PvP and PvE, have gone through much more drastic changes.

Is this the latest "pat ourselves on the back" thread? lol

First and foremost: Diablo 3 is awesome. Dissing it doesn't somehow excuse UO of it's own numerous shortcomings.
Second: It's a completely different genre of game; D3 = hack-n-slash/RPG.. UO = MMORPG. Comparing them makes no sense to begin with
Thirdly: Most complaints i've heard about D3 revolve around the basic fact that it plays nothing like Diablo 2. Why should it? It's not Diablo 2. It's Diablo 3. I was annoyed at the lack of customization for about 40 minutes of play, then I understood what they were going for instead, and now I like it. Overall it's an extremely well designed, higly polished/streamlined and generally top knotch quality title.(That auction system is epic. I've been preaching it for nearly 10 years now and I SAY IT AGAIN - UO CAN USE THE SAME! EVE HAS BEEN DOING IT ALL ALONG TO GREAT EFFECT)

Don't get me wrong, I hate blizzard with a passion but I've always liked the Diablo series and this latest game is rock solid. I also love UO, oubviously.. it's just a shame that the UO team is STILL dead-set against anything resembling production value.

i think if UO were to follow in the foot steps of some of the other well known mmos such as WoW, Aion Online, Diablo 2 and others with a similar kind of layout I don't think it would be the UO that we all came to love and enjoy playing throughout the years. There are things that are messed up in the game but for the most part it seperates itself from others because of it's uniquely designed playstyle. Personally I just can't wait for a game to come out that doesn't have the exact.. same... boring layout as most of the other really popular mmo games out there. A lot of people enjoy playing classic client still and i've never understood why after all these years people with that client can't make the UO window larger. That there is imo a pretty big deal since large flat screen monitors are getting cheaper everyday.

On normal mode, if you ramp up the DPS and vitality, it's very easy to be way ahead of the monsters. I mean really far ahead, to the point that mobs with 15+ monsters barely get your life down 20% I think I stopped dying after level 23 when I finally stopped focusing on magic/gold find and just upped the DPS and vitality.

They just canceled Dragon Age Legends, the Facebook game, and supposedly Dragon Age III was delayed due to that team working on Star Wars: The Old Republic, so it's good they are trying to get people interested in it.

The thing is that UO's interface is customizable for the EC. You can make the EC's interface look like the CC, but nobody has chosen to do so.

I'm actually surprised that the UO team hasn't offered a UI mod for the EC to make it look like the CC.

UO needed a customizable interface, because all of the major MMORPGs these days offer a customizable interface. Nobody runs a stock WOW interface except somebody who has never played an MMORPG and who has never spent 5 minutes on a WOW website.

Honestly, UO needs to be doing a few things that other MMORPGs do, that UO is currently not doing, to bring in new players.

It's true from the point of view of the spreadsheet warriors who crunch numbers to squeeze out every last bit of properties they can.

Like I said, the moment I find myself falling into that trap, I'm done with D3. So far I've avoided it by limiting my time in the Auction House as much as possible.

I'm glad nobody is complaining about the always on requirements. Somebody that I played with this weekend was complaining about. This was after they told me how much time they spent in the AH (a lot). I told them that if they weren't connected to the internet, then AH would not work, and a lot of people complaining seem to be missing that aspect. The AH is a major component of D3, and there's no getting around the internet connection for it.

I'm definitely a fan of buying three great games for $20 each rather than taking my chances for $60 on a game built around little else but hype, especially since I played DII to death and only played pretty much because all my friends hyped it up. I dont think the D-series was ever as fun solo as it was multi, but there were hardly the same choices available then as we have now. Besides, I need to save up for a Wii U, lol mostly kidding...but oh man, finally, like ten million years later, we'll be able to play poker, choose Madden plays, etc., straight from our controller screens. If only the creators of Vegas Stakes could make a Wii U title.

It's hard to find a great single-player game that runs on Vista/7 without help and costs under $20. You look at most of them and go, omg...2006 graphics suck ;D...then go back to UO: CC and you're like...what? Hahaha. I'm derailing this thread, but if anyone has a great modern game for under $20, link me up, hahaa.

My favorites that I can think of have to be Supreme Commander and it's expansion for $9 and Dragon Age, all its DLCs, and expansion for $14. I have both already, obviously, so I can't get a deal, but if you love RTS (SupCom) or RPGs (Dragon Age) those are some nice deals.

Depends on the genre you're looking for.
And also your hardware.

Have a gander at Steam Sales, Specials, and Price Drops.
It covers titles that are reduced on Steam, GOG, D2D and a bunch of others, and lets you filter games by min/max price.

The problem is that the D3 model applies to all of D3 and Blizzard is much more serious about scripters/farmers.

I would be more inclined to support a Warcraft-style Auction House, where it's confined to just that server and you have to show up in person, if only to bring people together, and to break the grasp the illegal search sites are allowed to have. If EA isn't going to make an attempt to shut down the scripters, they could at least undermine them by offering an in-game auction house.

Speaking of the scripters, if they did this to UO, they'd have to deal with the fact that it's extremely easy to script/farm/exploit certain areas, and that if they did an AH that encompassed all of UO, the exploiters/scripters would be able to script the hell out of the lesser populated shards and would no longer have to pay for transfers since things farmed on a lesser populated shard could easily be sold to people on say Atlantic or LS. It would radically transform the economy from the point of view that gold or items would cost the same on any shard.

Yes, it would raise revenue for UO since UO would get a cut of the real-money sales, but unless they first dealt with the scripters/exploiters, they open themselves up to condoning/supporting the scripters/exploiters.

One interesting aspect - a centralized auction house in UO could be used to check for dupes and delete them if they come up for auction.

i was only thinking of in game auction for gold for items searchable

ps LOL economy is gone in this game has been for 3 years at least!!!!!!!!

i can move once a month between 5 shards for free so that argument is gone now script sites will just buy older accounts and keep them clean!!!!!!!!!!!!

and a auction house could be limited to like 10 items per account at a time :)

That is one of the ways in which Blizzard is hoping to counter the farmers.

But just imagine an auction house in UO limited to 10 items. Enough people would pancake that it wouldn't stay at 10.

And I agree the economy is screwed up. Who knows, a global auction house would make things interesting, but I think they should still limit anything like that to a per-shard AH.

they need to find something :) this game has lived on life support for way too long!!!!!!!!!!!!

lets face it if you go even to unnamed search sites, short of maybe 4 shards there is a very large lack of normal game things, less is for cash which site owners move around to fit demand!

so a multi shard thing would help game!

something that a couple of database interns could make 70 percent workable ie normal for this game over the summer could!

should legit dev interest in game, over secret possible, vet rewards, anniversary items :)

I was going to get Plants vs. Zombies for $3 when it went on sale but I forgot about it! ;P (via Steam). Yeah, I'm thrifty, lol.
I paid around £2.00 for Plants v Zombies and played it to death lol, excellent fun and regularly back on offer. There's a game called Mount & Blade on Steam too, excellent single player game and the mounted combat is simply amazing, might be worth a look.

They didn't phone it on content - if you actually do everything and follow the story and don't ignore the dialogue and the journals, it's a very rich history they built up for D3.

It makes me think it'd be cool if they hired somebody to start writing a lot more in-game stories for UO, like a full-time writer fleshing out npcs and locations.

As for replay-ability, most games have no serious reply-ability. UO? After building my characters, I really had no desire to go back through and do the same things again.

Amen! I played Mount & Blade, effing LOVED it. It was introduced to me as "what UO could be if they actually cared about the game". I kind of agree. Have yet to try any mods for the AI in it, but they sure is dumb!
They released "Warband" expansion/stand alone for that series. Same exact idea as the first, just more land and....2? new classes. Still very fun.
A turn-based game that is extremely addictive, King Arthur: Role playing game. Think its under 10$ on Steam as well, definatly worth it.

Diablo III doesn't even start until Inferno mode. I'm currently in the 3rd act of inferno on a monk and absolutely loving it. Sure you can stack x stat and vitality in normal, through nightmare, and even up to hell mode and it'll get you by. If you're playing a wizard you have a passive that caps the damage you take at 35% so you can completely skip vitality for straight health regen. Inferno, however, is a completely other beast. The normal white mobs alone will challenge a majority of the playerbase. You'll need resists, kiting techniques, regens, strategy, and you'll probably find yourself changing your template act to act. Not to mention, you won't be able to kill all the special mobs solo so it encourages team play.

Once you're at level 60 you get the nephlem buff stacks for +% magic find (1 per special mob) and you can work your way into Inferno act I which is pretty much set up for farming gear needed for the next acts. It's an amazing game, with a pretty awesome gold sink system set up. Also, the auction house is amazing.

Sorry, but I don't see how any dungeon, or anything at all for that matter in UO could be compared to how challenging Diablo III is.

My main in D3 is 54 witch doc, so I'm on hell difficulty act 1, even with 4 players the elite mobs are super hard, killing our entire party multiple times, I cannnot even imagine how hard inferno is. I have yet to find content in UO that could not be killed by 4 or less skilled pvm players.

I missed your intention that actually 4 skilled people in uo could do anything, but still take 4 people to even try to get the keys to a shimmering eff, and then you could try to kill it, it will take a while and before you get the right set up youll die plenty. After a while you could get the right team but its not that easy, and so its most of the smaller champs from the ilshenar expansion.

back to UO.

Lotta eye candy but gameplay was a real letdown.
Diablo is Diablo. They aren't going to change the formula much because it's a successful formula that lets casual players have an RP romp in single-player, and offers some level of multi-player interaction. Even Blizzard doesn't expect it will replace WoW... but as many of have said, offer a diversion to it.

What Diablo III does for me though is make me wish we had a world as beautifully rendered. Yeah, their camera perspective is slightly askew from the top-down we're used to, but ultimately it is a comparable perspective, and it's just a beautiful game. It should be noted that even now in 2012, Diablo III offers two zoom levels... out and close in. And it is, I believe, fully 3D rather than sprites. If UO would take a similar approach to set zoom levels, even the 2D client could be enhanced for greater graphical prowess -- though clearly the EC is the beast that should be taking us for a ride... should be.

I think D3 is a blast. After playing through Normal and ACT I of Nightmare, i realized i should probably get through normal with another toon before i continue through hell because the shared stash is one awesome idea.

One thing i didnt realize before buying it was that the game is 100% online. No single player like D2. This made for some pretty frustrating incidents when i lagged through fights. However, they seem to have gotten the servers under control and gameplay is pretty smooth now.

Two totally different games though and they both can learn a bit from each other.

How do you play UO at all if you only have 3-4 hours a week to game play? You spend at least 4 hours a week crying about stuff and whining on stratics....
Quite simple and iam guessing what most people do!!!! i can whinge at work on here.....BUT i cant play uo at work.......
Like i said .....next life iam coming back as one of you 24/7 game geeks.....[whatever]

People in my guild solo the shimmering keys, and duo the shimmering peerless.
