It was brought to my attention by a couple of friends in game to come read a post. I was kinda shocked at what I had read.

years ago (they all have Ricardo lamps so before that) when I was given an empty account (no items in banks, naked characters and no house) I thought cool! It was a guild mate and they were leaving UO. I don't remember the exact conversation.

I changed the info on the account logged in and began making it my own. I didn't change any characters names. I placed a house. Swapped houses at one point due to the account not having new decorative additions I wanted on the home. Dropped scrolls on one character and worked her up. Created a new characters, scrolled her out.
Doing what anyone would do with (yes another) extra account. Getting extra holiday gifts, using it to get extra arc items. Doing self rescue rezzes. (don't lie we all do it when and if we can! lol)

Flashback to a few years back..... I was told by another guild mate that "so and so" wanted to know if they could see their characters or something. (Momma always said, look with your eyes not with your hands!) I was puzzled and spoke to my husband. He said sure, why not. I said, but they are all linked together now, he would have access to all of them. he said, oh... nope.

I logged into guild chat... what? yes, he had created another account and was in the guild with (at least) one of his new characters. I don't know if I told him directly, or through another guildmate, about the linked accounts. Time passed, he left guild on good terms, I would assume due to the guild's lack of activity. blah blah blah. That was the end of that. (or so I thought....dun dun dun)

It kinda chilled me to the bone to think he had been and has been hard at work trying to retrieve the account. If he had managed to gain access, he would have all MY accounts.

Well...It took some time (not really only since Sunday..!), but I have deleted the character I created and worked up. I deleted the one that I added scrolls to and worked up. I removed the house and opened another account to hold the house and start the characters over. Removed the characters from the guild. Opened a ticket with UO to unlink the account. Got it unlinked. (with someone's help! I think) Had to open a new email to attach the account to and sent a message to the "original owner". *waiting for him now*

I am giving the account back because well... he wants it back. He is a good person. He's human and most of all, in BoE we have a motto. Once a Banisher always a Banisher.

Why did I bother to even write this? Well it's always nice to have closure.

Thus ends/completes the story. Hopefully all's well that ends well.

wow kinda saddened you had to go through all of that in order to have peace of mind of having received an account from someone and them returning and possibly wanting it back. Or worse yet they getting that particular account back and since all your accounts are linked gain access to all of your accounts...Kinda mind numbing to me. I guess my feeling's about this had been fine till the new welcome back to Brit thing came up and news to all that you could gain access to your old accounts came back up in the conversation.in the beginning of time I made accounts fully decked pretty fast since I had lotsa time on my hands and im sure theres over 37 peeps out there that are now also wondering if they will have to do the same thing you are due to this same concern. my accounts I play on now was given to me years ago and I was never worried about them till this same thing came up. My thing is I been paying for these accounts for 6 years now and if they give them back to original owners I hope they keep em as long as I did because I will not be paying for this game any more. if they feel giving the account away for a month to someone who has not played the game in past 6 years for a month, so that they can come back to see what the real status of the game is and then leave..... its will be a lose lose for them. I would love my beta account back but you know what I passed that on to someone that was into the game and wanted it more then me so all the power to them I hope its still running and they are loving this game as much as I have. I don't want it back im happy with what I have and will continue to love the game until it is taken away from me or am to broke to pay for it, until then Rock on UO

Glad to see it was resolved. Tis a shame he wasn't able to get a hold of you and ask, forcing you to find out through the grapevine.

Your loyalty to your guild mate whilst admirable was misplaced in this case in my opinion. The guy sounds like a ****** bag and would have stolen the account back that he freely gave away, given the chance. The fact that you had to go to such lengths shows that you didnt trust him nor his intentions.

Viper9 she was scared out of it.
The relief it gave her to keep her homes and accounts from him was her main objective, not some vague loyalty.
He could and would have gotten it back if he had all the info from his creation of the accounts and could prove it.
This only makes me more uptight over the right or worng issue of this.
Many gave accounts away years ago... flippantly giving out the name and password to friends or guildmates.
Most were down right pushing that it was not like they were going to return.
A good deal worked up accounts and sold them on Ebay.
IT SCARE'S THE LIVING DAILIGHTS OUT OF ME.....
What if ... omg!
I have some.
Way before the transfer system that EA added for this reason people made and sold accounts.
Till now..
I am sorry to all who gave away their accounts to others or sold them...
I know the regret is there and we have something to wish we could take back.
But after years of others owning them its time to let it go and do the right thing like many other returning vets have done.
The opening of a new account.
Start UO life anew.
It's not that hard.
I understand the age of the account is in some respects the reason its wanted... come on we all know the lure of Shard Shields and the new Tiger... the $$$ its worth is got to be on their mind when they make the move to regain something given/sold to another.
This is an old kettle of fish and it stinks like holy hell...
If you gave your account or sold it to someone consider it a gift given.
Dont make hell for you and the present owner, and for the Dev who will have to make a point out of it and hurt one of you.

She said the account came to her blank of any real posessions... But she is giving him back something she has no way of stopping...
The account has aged in her care...
Shame on him.

Yes with the policy recently described by Mesanna in a Developer hangout, I cleaned and shut down an account for similar reasons. It is now best to have accounts that have never been linked to anyone else in the past. (Sold, given, or otherwise)

It's a shame we should now have to look over our shoulder if we have an account we ether were given or bought.
I gave every one who ever gave me an account the same set of rules..
1. that I would not touch it for 1 year to give them time to reconsider.
2. That after the 1 year I will consider the account mine and if needed I will make it such.
3. Till that one year mark I will hound the hell out of them to return to UO abd take it back!!!
Only 2 people ever listened to me... and I was happy they got their account I held for them.
Many to this day ask me how is your account, meaning their old one. They do not even think to ask for it as one told me tonight.
Gifts are given. With love and friendship.

When players ask EA/Broadswords to get there account back, it should only happen if:
1. They was the last one who paid for it
2. or they did contact EA, when they lost it from haching but never got it back, however, the account can have been traded several times sinse them, and the current owner may be innocent.

If they did sell the account or give it away or leave it in the hands of a guildmate, there are no way, EA/Broadswords should let them have the account back. The current owner may have played the account several years and builded several chars, gained vet reward points and paid for it.

Maybe EA/Broadswords need to make a special pack for returning players including 2 mystic tokens, upgrade to SA and High Sea, 250k gold and 3 month paid. Maybe add a token including 5 items, like mailbox, community box, e-mount, homefire and 3 green tokens, forgot the name.
Now what should it cost and did I forget something, I was thinking about $50?

That would make life easier for returning players, who already have an account or only have a trial account.

I won't start panicking now.
9 out of the 10 accounts I regularly use have changed their hands via purchasing or gifting to me for various reasons.
They hold houses, they have the bank boxes full of stuff their original owner had not earned - and if the original owner would contact me, we could do a arrangement for the account, that for sure - I am not that clingy, but would like to keep my stuff.
I lost one forever unused account, which does not like the password any more, which I think it should have had, so that I could never link it to one of these infamous EA accounts. Password recovery did not bring any result.
Since the account was sitting on an RTB house and that fell due to above fact, I don't care any more about it. But still wonder what happened, of course.
