About forum "moderators"

Are forum Moderators assigned to specific forums or are they free to "moderate" (post as moderators, lock threads, etc.) on all forums here at Stratics?

Assigned to specific forums, though admins can moderate any thread. That's my understanding, at least.

How can I find out who the moderator is for any given forum?

Bottom right corner on the main forum post listing.
That lists the moderators for each forum.

Can you tell me what (if anything) is "expected" of forum moderators? How are they "appointed"? Do they work for Stratics?

Is there a problem?
Petra, even though YOU helped me with a problem through PM a week or so ago. I nearly spit coffee out when I read this..No offense to you of course, but yeah, there's a problem..

Please enlighten me.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find a reliable source of automated volunteer moderators, so we have to make do with human ones.

They're prone to mistakes and misunderstandings but they have a genuine desire to see the forum functioning well and without undesireable unpleasantness. Most problems can usually be sorted out with patience and good communication.

I am the perfect candidate to be a forum moderator!

Please make an unrestricted forum where anything goes and I will gladly moderate it. And I can do that job well!

Hi Petra, and thx for responding here (I'm still wording a PM to you, but wanted to respond to you (above).

You state that moderators "have a genuine desire to see the forum function(ing) well..." - and - "Most problems can usually be sorted out..."

I'm assuming that the "role" of forum moderators then is twofold:

1) Make the forum "function" well.
2) Deal with "unpleasantness" as it arrises, as it always does.

Would this be correct?

Yes, that's essentially correct.

@Coragin: A forum such as you want has to be 'behind closed doors', as is the one Magdalene linked to. These forums are publicly viewable so some standards have to be met and maintained. The moderators do their best to assure this, but this 'civilised' world contains many 'uncivilised' people who think the right to speak their mind = the right to be abusive to anyone they dislike.
This is a mistaken belief.
