A Whisper in the Wind

In spite of the fact that former mayor Toshi, and his supporters Sneaky Pete et al have disappeared from Barter Town and Minoc life goes on there. Branwyn of Errol continues her second term as Governor. It was Sneaky Pete and his mud slinging (based on hearsay) that drove her to abandon her keep at the riverbend. This is quite a story in itself which I shall share elsewhere. Since Bran wanted to live in the town where she serves, she built a modest cottage and in front of it a botanicals shop. The shop sat largely unfurnished and completely unused except for the veranda where public transport portals are in place for the local residents.
Now there were rumors that gargoyle slave trafficking was happening in the locale for a while now, but there was absolutely no evidence for these rumors. However, one day in early Spring when the early flowers were beginning to bloom in the front of the shop Bran spotted a raggedy gargoyle drinking water from the well there. The poor creature then laid down behind the well. Bran went over and saw that this gargoyle was very emaciated and filthy dirty. She left her alone to rest, placing a basket of food next to her so that when she awakened, she could eat and be on her way. Then she returned to her cottage and retired for the night.
Next morning as she was leaving home, she saw the gargoyle come running to her and bowing down before her speaking in a strange tongue. From that moment on, this gargoyle has served her as a companion and aid. But not as a slave since she is perfectly free to leave at any time. Bran set her up in the empty shop, so she has a place to live and to work because it became apparent that she has some excellent crafting skills. But if it isn't enough that we have this "odd couple", it seems a third party has entered the picture. I will tattle about this when I get some more details.

Well readers, the Barter Town tattler is here again with the latest gossip:
It seems that some wild character came into town via the hub teleported and started dancing around the toxic green flames that next door at Chad’s monument. Branwyn came outside to see what was going on and watches the obviously female, dressed in elven armor and wearing an orc helm carry on by the shrine. When the orc/elf spotted Branwyn she sauntered over and began speaking in English with a thick or is accent.
Like a fly on the wall I stood motionless behind the shrubs trying to overhear their conversation but was unable to make any sense of it.
All I can say for now is that after their conversation Branwyn and her garg servant were huddled together for a long time and that together they began moving things around on the main floor of the abandoned shop. I will continue to keep an eye on this activity and fill you in. After all, in this heat, how better to amuse oneself than mind other people’s business.

Well readers, the whispering is over as the leaves are falling from the trees in the region of Minoc/Barter Town. And the plot of land beside Chad Sexington's Memorial, once hosting the residence of Stinky Pete which was rebuilt as a shop is completely bare. What happened you may ask. Well Orc pyromania struck. Branwyn had long considered opening a pub at that location and it seems that the recently arrived Orc Mur'bul was an experienced "Taburn Boss" or so she claimed. She had been employed as such by the Burzuum Clan in the Catskillian Malas region. However, when midsummer passed, business dropped off and she went looking for a new job. Branwyn was delighted and hired her to help Phelonius the gargoyle builder to get the place up and running. When all was up and running and the cider was fermenting, Phelonius set up one of those new-fangled Barbecue smokers inside the place. Mur'bul thinking it was suitable for a bonfire, piled up wood in it and set it alight. The flames must have reached high enough to set the ceiling on fire and from there the upper floors. Thank goodness the exterior walls were Minoc granite, so the flames were contained by the structure and didn't spread to Branwyn's cottage. The place was a total loss however, before anyone noticed the fire. Needless to say, the Orc Mur'bul vanished without a trace. But stranger still was the disappearance of Phelonius Lyre her faithful servant of many years. Was she afraid of reprisal for the fire? Did she return to TurMur? Or was she kidnapped by the gang of gargoyle traffickers rumored to operate out of Barter Town?
