A technical question about duping

First: Don't post here how it is done!

I've read quite a lot about duping on these boards during the past months. In game, I never was confronted with duping. Neither do I buy expensive stuff from vendors, nor do I know anybody abusing bugs. (As a matter of fact, the only "cheating" I personally witnessed, was scripters in the Painted Caves.)

It seems that the duping problem is still out there, and according to the boards it has been a problem for a long time. My point is: I'd like to understand where the root of the duping problem lies. To my knowledge, each items has a unique ID. "Duping" an item would mean that there would be 2 items with the same ID. This could easily be prevented.

Maybe I am technically naive, but why can't duping be efficiently prevented? Where lies the core problem? Why do dupes happen again and again over several years?

A rule of thumb is that for every 1000 lines of code, there will be atleast 1 bug. Now think about how many lines of codes are in UO, and that is the answer to your question :) There will always be bugs in UO and people will always try to figure out how to exploit them.

Also, character transfering will reset all of the unique IDs that an item receives. This is why dupers xfer (and alot of the dupes are because of xfers) to go unnoticed. Atleast they won't get noticed straight away as there wouldnt be 2 items with the same ID.

UO is patchy.
and the code was released years ago. (WHO BLUNDERED THAT I DONT KNOW)

With the two above duping and scripting became a virius.

Without the release of the code, scripting would not be happening to the greatest extent it does.

For duping, yeah sometimes people get lucky and find it but know the code helps.

Ones you find a pattern, bright people exploit it.

The duping that occurs always launders the item to a new creation. Think abou like this.

You leave your bedroom with all your stuff to go to the garage. The next day your still in both places.
