A tangled web

Caine Family

Adventurer
Stratics Veteran
The sun was just peeking over the horizon, painting the water with a beautiful array of reds and golds. But that beauty was lost on the young girl angrily pacing back and forth on the wall. The fact that there was no divot carved into the brick wall from her frantic pacing was amazing; the girl had been pacing her entire duty rotation. The other guards gave her a wide berth, knowing if she was approached in the mood she was in, they would feel the brunt of her anger.

What the HELL possessed Thea to run off like that? Especially with father lurking around. Did she WANT to lose the coveted position of Captain of the Guard? Because of HIM?

She had already told her sister he wasn’t good enough for her, but true to her nature, she refused to listen. Maybe it was time for Melody to take matters into her own hands.

*********

The night started well enough. The Caine family finally had time to talk about where Mason was when he went missing. Much of it, he didn’t remember. But what he did remember was certainly odd enough.

The addition of Lady Claudia, Governor Durreah and Izznet was helpful. They asked questions Melody hadn’t thought of. But the only things the group was sure of was that Mason had been kidnapped and escaped. Who took him, why he was taken and how he escaped remains a mystery.

All was fine until her father, Jayce arrived.

“Who is manning the wall?” He bellowed.

Thea was quick to jump up and tell him she had personally patrolled the area and all was quiet. That seemed to satisfy him until he returned later in the evening looking for Thea.

As it happened, Thea had just been pulled upstairs for a private “chat” by John.

Melody narrowed her eyes at the thought of the man; he was arrogant and egotistical. Almost the moment she met him she hated him. That the feeling was mutual was not lost on her.

She just had no idea to get him away from her sister…yet. But she would find a way.

“Excuse me. Lieutenant?” the private timidly asked.

“WHAT?”

“Ummm. I’m here to relieve you.”

She quickly nodded to the man, and turned towards home.

Covian Guard
