A story and a question.

First the story.

Brit bank on Europa used to be a hive of activity with nearly all players using it for various reasons. Then came the invasion, the bank became a dangerous place to visit especially for crafters so reasonably enough it fell into disuse. Luna became the new focus. However there has always been a certain nostalgia for the old days amongst some vets and around the 17th March 2013 certain players started a drive to restore it to something like its old glory.

The following link is to a post made at the time which names some of the players involved together with a screenie of the beginning -

http://community.stratics.com/threads/free-repairs-at-brit-bank-and-dupre-visited-us.296418/

Since that time, that small beginning has evolved into a daily meeting between 6 and 7pm UK time for the repair of goods, general discussion, advice and helping new players. These are well attended and might be termed a great success in the re-emergance of Brit bank to its former prominence. The EMs have provided useful items nearby like a forge etc to enable repair work to be carried out immediately. Although I have seen a screenshot of a meeting unfortunately I do not have one I can post to illustrate how well it has worked. A LOT of players get enjoyment from these meetings and hopefully they encourage new players to continue with UO.

At Chrismastime this year one player laid out a long table to make a party type atmosphere instead of rows of chairs as is usual. This I do have a shot of -

BritBank.JPG

Brit.jpg picture taken of todays meeting. 6th Jan

The following day he once again did the same, this time however there was a difference, in common with most shards we have our share of those who get their kicks from ruining the enjoyment of others. Yes, thats right, griefers!. We have one particularly offensive specimen ( who must of course remain nameless) who thought it would be fun to remove all the players efforts into the rubbish bin. Despite being asked to stop by some of those present everything went 'poof'. Yes I know that loose articles are designed and allowed to be discarded but it was quite obvious what was intended with these items and as I see it must constitute harassment in that the actions were designed to interfere with the playing enjoyment of others, the playguide contains the following criteria --

'We'd rather not go into the specifics of all the actions we consider physical
harassment, but we do want to make it clear that it is not okay to ruin the fun
of UO for other players, specifically when that is the intent behind your
actions. It is important to realize and accept that everyone plays this game
differently, and everyone has different expectations from the game and from the
other players. Ultima Online is a social setting, and as such, we expect our
players to treat one another with the same respect and dignity they would use in
any other social situation.
If your sole purpose and intent in any action is to continually upset,
aggravate, or otherwise annoy another player, you may be a "grief player." Using
game mechanics to cause grief to others can also be seen as exploitation, and
will be treated accordingly by game staff.

I can come to no other conclusion than that the actions by the griefer fall fully within this description, they WERE designed to ruin the fun of other players and they WERE annoying the other players present.
So the player was reported and at least one player e-mailed Messana.

To demonstrate how effective these actions were YESTERDAY the same idiot did the same with the chairs that were laid out for the usual evening meeting, once again upsetting all those present and giving a great illustration to those new players there, of the dark side of UO.

Now, finally I come to the question. Given that reporting doesn't work, e-mailing Messana doesn't work. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?.

Same thing I always do..... quit doing nice things for other people where A-holes can ruin it. Hold the events in my house where things can be locked down and secured and gate folk who are interested to the feast or whatever... from the bank.

I know this isn't what you want to hear.... but getting anyone DEV's, GM's or anything or anyone else to respond to the clear harassment of other players is quite honestly an effort in futility. While I agree with your assessment of the situation and I certainly applaud your efforts at bringing fun an entertainment to your shard... I highly doubt anything will ever come out of your post here except some rather ugly criticism by those who enjoy griefing and think that it is a real part of gameplay and that's how they enjoy the game is though the pain and torment they bring to other players. Sadly this has been allowed since day one in many games and so it goes on... Apparently they have the right to be a complete troll and you have no right to help others, to bring fun to others, or to try to hold an event in a public place...

Try holding a Tournament in the Arena's with a bunch of griefers... Or try playing Bagball at the Bagball arena with a bunch of griefers. GM's won't do anything.... EM's can't do anything,.... DEV's don't do anything.

Yet as Governors we're expected to do things to raise money and such for our cities.... yet when you try you get griefed and there is NOTHING you can do.... except like I suggested hold it at a private home and ban any of the A-Holes who show up to grief.

Unless they say the "r" word... or impersonate a DEV or something you aren't likely to get any assistance at all.

Do we even have real GM's anymore?

I'm glad you put this out there, Bobar. Hopefully someone has an idea on how to fix this situation. The folks who run this player event every day put a lot of time and effort into it.

There should be a "Jail" button in the Help menu. It should bring up a target cursor and if a person is selected by 2 or 3 players independently, he or she will be sent to jail and the first available GM would take the necessary actions from there.

A deep shame to see this wonderful event on Europa be ruined, I try attend whenever I can and it really is an enjoyment and brings back memories of the old days.

Unfortunately this disruption is upsetting my fellow friends on Europa, who are now considering leaving. :( Friends are what have kept me in UO, I worry what I will do when they all finally do leave.

The sad answer is there is nothing you can do. The only thing I could think of right now would be to hold the meetings at a house somewhere and then just gate people from the bank. This was you can ban any trouble makers for good.

Sadly, having experienced this first hand too many times, my conclusion now is that despite the huge fun of the game, the great community we had, and the friends I've made - it's time to walk away from it. The only person who can stop this happening simply chooses not to, and to add extra insult keeps saying how much she cares about the community and knows we have been let down, yet still only responds with the most pathetic of excuses and outright false statements instead of actually doing her job.

We could move the meetings elsewhere, yes .... but you know what? Why the hell should we.... there is a clear, repeated problem that only the owners of the game can address, and they knowingly turn a blind eye to it every time. I'm tired of paying money to be the target of some abusive, antisocial morons who get their kicks by spoiling things for others, and paying the salaries of people who lie to us about how much they 'care'..... of course, they never quite 'care' enough to enforce their own rules, just make more feeble excuses why they can't do anything, when the reality is they choose not to do anything. Whether from idleness, cowardice or corruption, I have no idea, but what matters in the end is the result of their choices, not their reasons for making, or not making, them.

As gametime expires on my accounts now, it's not being renewed. I'll be around long enough to finish the events and seasons we run, but whilst this community remains so woefully abused by the people who claim to regard is as important, this game - or rather those running it - are no longer worth supporting.

As you are aware I share your sentiments and your opinion of the way this game is currently run, BUT, simply because I am blind pig-ignorant stubborn I will not go down the same path. For me that means the moron wins and that I will never concede. If you think a bit more about it in that light I trust you will not follow your immediate reaction and begin to quit. You would be missed badly on Europa where you are one of the mainstays and for God's sake do not allow the scumbag that kind of victory. That is their objective after all.

Since this seems to be a daily event and enjoyed by many, can´t you get the EM to lock them down permanently? Should be doable if allowed higher up.

For example, on Atlantic just outside the South exit of Luna there is a long row of tables with statues on them that has been permamently locked down for the players to use/enjoy.

The dilemma for us is we need to be where people see us . Returning oldtimers show up at the bank..and while they do their business they see people having a good time and they ask whats going on. We tell we are there to meet and greet new and returning players, repair answer questions learn to know new people..get some in guilds even. And we chat, fool around sometimes ..snowballs and such..and eat pizza! We greet new players and tell they are welcome to sit down with us and talk . Most people around tell new and returning players they meet during the day to check Brit bank in the evening and this has become sooo popular. Our leaders of this , Lien Ragus and Aurelius, both governours and running other events as well , Means everything to Europa . Their knowledge is huge and the humble way they teach us and care for the community is outstanding. They have done this for well ower a year and it has been a great year.

I will support everything which has already been said. Ultima is still alive and yes it is not because of "unamed ppl" !!!
We did choose Britain to hold those meetings for 2 reasons : 1/ we like to see the main city active at least part of the day and 2/ because it s a lovely place to meet returning and/or new players.... they often pass by Britain you know... still.....

Now i m sharing AUrelius' concerns.... Why, we players, should try our best to keep UO alive and more active why we dont have any strong actions taken against a very small minority that does what they want without any warning...

The way i see it now is sadly clear. You will end the game with a couple of A-holes ppl and none others... You just cant hide behind the said 'rules" to do nothing... Rules need to be adjusted if you want the game to live longer...

Just my 2 cents...

By this I mean having them locked down by Brit bank like in the picture.
The Luna thing was just an example to show that EMs or whoever did it actually can lock stuff down for players.

Another option could be to use the Tavern just South of the bank.
Benches, tables and lovely waitresses already in place.

Honestly I think if you cannot get someone to lock tables down for you, anything you put down is only going to attract said griefers. They are like moths round a lightbulb when something hits the ground. Simply amusements for simple minds really.

The only thing I can suggest in a Tram city is avoid unlocked items or lift them the minute this idiot arrives. I'd actually avoid that kind of event until you or a GM get him to move on. They tend to keep returning if they think they might get action later.

I'd recommend a few things for you to do as a group. It really helps if you can get everyone ignoring him consistently. It's hard, but prolonged exclusion really gets them bored quick.
  1. Don't talk to him, or even about him. Act as if he doesn't even exist no matter how hard he tries to get attention.
  2. Don't use anything he can pick up or interfere with.
  3. Make it clear that you're having a great time, never show any signs of frustration or anger, they love that stuff.
  4. If you really want to give him the cold shoulder, party up and chat in party instead of local.
  5. It's a long shot, but if he's guilded, sometimes a word with their GM can get them punished from their side too.
I find if you totally exclude someone and they cannot get attention or cause disruption... or what little they manage is ignored, they can often just leave by themselves. It's better to get them banned, but I'd totally isolate and ignore any griefers you get.

If you can't get stuff locked down by the EM, then I'd really consider using a player house for an event where you need to use items on tables etc. Someone will need to stay at the bank casting gates, but it should work for a special event. Especially if you could give out runes in advance.

Griefers are a real pain, but if you can keep positive and dig in then they're totally survivable. Sometimes you need to help the upset folks to see the funny side so they stop being frustrated and angry.

Oh actually there might be one way to guarantee he gets bored.... have a series of poetry reading nights or some other totally RP story telling and that sort of stuff. Think of anything this character will find obscenely boring and do it. Some griefers will flee at the first sign of anything involving proper words :D

Well Well Well.....

It seems we have been heard. I m so glad that the Lady herself came to Britain and made a nice place to run our daily meetings.
It looks gorgeous and i m sure it will even bring more ppl around.... without anything for the "unamed" ppl...
A special thank for our advisor to listen and report our feelings...

Thanks very much Milady for helping the community to have a gathering facility.

It's a nice thought, but what would deter 2 or 3 griefers from wielding the same sword against the innocent? Not only would they send innocent players to jail, albeit temporarily, they'd wear down GMs with this demand on their time. Out of pure fairness, a GM would have to say about anyone that he can't do something unless he witnessed it for himself.

that is very nice! thank you Mesanna!!!
but there is still a big task to do. It would be great if finally something was actually done about the players who caused this and a lot of other problems. we do not seem to have a GM support on Europa at all and using the help functions or sending a mail also has zero effect.....i really wish that would change, at least a bit
thank you

Name and shame the griefers?

Try gating them to fel and own them there?

Or gate them to fel and steal off them?

Note to those against F2P because of the "type of player" it would attract ....

UO has a higher percentage of griefers than any other game I've ever played, either subscription or F2P. Going F2P would actually dilute the % of a-holes rather than increase it.

This is why I want to be able to, when I ban a characters speech, it ban's their whole account so they can't come back on another char and be all innocent. Just like a home but with speech.

I am glad you got things resolved. It is pretty upsetting when a few people travel from shard to shard and act like that and get away with it.. I don't know if it is because they own 20 or so accounts and don't want to lose more business or what. It is with a sad heart that after reading this, makes me want to give up on this game myself. I wrote to the Head Lady myself and she offered an apology and shard transfer tokens. I refused the tokens but noticed the new (at the time) harassment policy. I think it is a waste of time trying to report the abuse over and over. In real life you learn in therapy to break away from the situation and turn a negative into a positive and chalk it up to another lesson and experience to share with those willing to listen. This game has given me so much joy over the years and it has been alot of fun. If it was not for the handful of decent honest players with a heart and soul, I would of closed accounts by now. My advice is if its not fun anymore.... move on to something else. If you are gettin harassed after you join chat and say hello or lol ... it might be a sign. People say oh if you leave they win... Not to me. I win by not having to put up with the crap over and over. Healthy living is the best revenge, game advice and real life. :) No I am not quitting...this month. There is a poem that is by porta nelson, a hole in my sidewalk ... One of these days, I will walk down another street, but for now I like helping others get out of the hole that I used to fall into alot. Peace out and keep smiling. Thanks for readin this and glad things worked out for you.

i think we can all agree that Ultima Online is the furthest thing away from this lol. its an addiction / crutch just like anything else. thats ok we all need stuff like that sometimes, but it would be a 100% lie to say that the perfect example of a healthy life involved a video game. at all.
