My Hammer, My Heart

The Story of Tumeh Shazaa of Sonoma

By John Christopher O’Hara

Laphia ngai, my friends. I am Tumeh Shazaa of Sonoma. I am from Earth, the same home as our beloved Lord British. My journey is one of mishap and circumstances beyond my control, but they have brought me to many friends that I would not dare to trade for all the precious metals of the land. I shall start with my memories of my training as a smith, and one day end with my journeys upon the lands of Sosaria. Thus, my tale begins…

As the sun rose over the land one morning, my father called to me. “Tomai! Come to the forge and see the glories of the fire!”, he called. I quickly rose from my bedding and ran to his side. “See, Tomai? The metal we found last time we went mining has made a fine hammer! It is well balance, heavy enough to use as a weapon, and delicate enough for the finest metal shaping! It is my best work!”, he beamed. I knew it was his best work. I could never doubt his skill. He always knew how to coax the shape hiding with a hunk of ore out from hiding. That is how he always spoke of his work. He never really ‘made’ anything. He simply ‘discovered’ what was within it. He lifted the hammer gently from the anvil, and cleaned all the soot from it with an old cloth. “Tomai.”, he said, “ Long have you looked on in awe at myself when I worked and toiled to discover what beauty lies hidden within the metal. Many a night have you rushed to bed to wake early to see me bring works of beauty to the land. I now show you, that you, too, may do so.” With that, my eyes widened, as he handed me the hammer he had just ‘discovered’. I started to weep tears of joy, as I accepted this gift. Little did I know, this gift would one day cause me to lose my beloved homeland.
