A plea for help with installing UO with Wine on Mac

After considerable tinkering on my own, I think I should ask here for help.

What I have now is the Winebottler combo app loaded and working and I have a copy of the enhanced client of uo and classic client view Samarai empire disk loaded on my Mac.

When I try to load the enhanced client x11 opens up and I see the UO screen open up, then after that nothing happens.

With the classic client it opens up the patch window but can't get anything to work once that happens (with the OK or Cancel buttons).

I've looked over what statics says about Wine and Linux, but it does get a little techy for me to follow at points.

Hopfully I can get up and running and see whats up on Siege and Atl soon.

Thank you for your help!

I know UO works wonderfully well under Mac OS X with CrossOver Games which is a packaged version of Wine.

The only thing I can think of is that you don't have DirectX properly installed. CrossOver provides a way to download and install DirectX 9 and until I installed that, UO was crapping out before I got to patching. I don't know how Wine handles DirectX installs. You toggle an option in CrossOver and it downloads and installs DirectX.

I would ask in the UO Enhanced Client Discussion - Stratics Forums as Pinco and a few others are running it under Wine.

I'm running it without crossover or winebottler...

It does sound like you're missing Direct X or something... Also, you might want to install IE in wine so the patch notes display correctly...

Good info, I think I'm getting closer to solving this mystery!

I'll take Raptors advice and try to get IE in wine.

if that doesnt work may try cross over, or just buy a copy of windows xp.

thanks for the heLp

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but...

Having played uo ec via wine, i wanted to add here that the software emulation is not optimal. Quite frankly, the ec is a great addition to uo, but it requires every bit of direct access to your computer hardware. It is a resource hog. Wine works. However, playing uo ec via bootcamp using windows is much better, in terms of performance. I would strongly advise you to use win7 via bootcamp to have a fantastic uo experience. If you really can't get over rebooting your pc to get into the bootcamp partition then wine is fine.

Of course, it will cost you a win7 copy, but hey.... That's only about 6 tangles.

Using Crossover on my Mac. It does push the hardware but runs well. I had to download Mondain's Legacy version first and then patch from there. I'm sure there is an easier way but it works fine when I run UO on my laptop (Which isn't too often).

I dunno, I have a GF9800 and had no real performance problems in the EC, all my issues with it were looks (god it's blurry) and controls (classic targeting doesn't work properly, it swaps targets on attack). Just make sure you're using a reasonably recent build of WINE (I'm currently using 1.3.0)

Both CC and EC are "Gold" apps in wine now, which pretty much means "runs perfectly after installing prerequisites", which in the EC's case is IE and d3dx9 (which winetricks will happily install for you) I have both installed and both work perfectly.

It runs great under Crossover for me - my only problems have been permissions related when updating the UI but I've worked around those. Performance wise it's great these days.

My problems with EC under Wine/Crossover are related to EC problems that Windows users have.

Did anyone write a "todo list" for getting this to work?
I would like to give it a try and could jump in and trial/error it... but if someone wrote the manual I might aswell take a look :)

Thanks!
