A new dupe thread

I've played since '98, and only discovered an hour ago that those NPCs that hang around the alchemists sell hair restyles. :p

I feel like such a dupe.

Feel free to post your own "Dupe" experience in UO. :D

My favourite will always be:

after running a regs vendor for many years (at least 5) I found out by accident that I can buy the total amount he offers by holding down the shift button while clicking on the reg i want to buy. Can you imagine how long it takes to scroll to 999 every single time ? (and sometimes they update right while you are scrolling and you get the "item has been removed from shopping list" message and have to start all over again)

I felt like a complete idiot and couldnt stop laughing.

I knew a guy who was typing the works of Edgar Allen Poe into UO books by hand and giving them to people. He didn't know what to say when I told him he could have just made a paste macro.

Me, I didn't know until this year that some NPC vendors sell mass bulk recall scrolls. Usually much cheaper than what players sell them for these days, too. Saves me a lot of sorting through vendors.

I believe the only time that happens is if someone is working Inscription and they sell there scrolls to the NPC

Actually there are some mage NPCs who stock 4th circle spells. (there was a note a year or so ago about increasing how common such vendors are)

He meant you can copy anything out of game and it will get put on your clipboard, then you can make a UO macro to paste and paste directly into the UO book. There is a character limit length however, but it's a heck of a lot easier than typing everything in by hand.

I'll never forget when someone explained to me that cutting up hides made them into leather and was a lot lighter for your backpack. ;)

it seem to me he said the guy was wright each book by hand. make it once, copy, paste, whatever, then use scribe to copy the hole book at once...

I think I played 6 months before I finally found out that the "circle of transparency" was NOT spell..... You have no idea the number of "LOL"s and "newbs" I had shouted at me though NOT ONE person EVER explained to me that the circle was something on my options on my paperdoll!.... I often would wonder how other folk looted monsters that fell on the west side of buildings and such.... I would go WAY out of my way to hunt things so that they died out in the open and I could loot them...... and cried the day "I" died on the west side of a home and couldn't do anything to get to my body.... (this was WAY before insurance came into being).... so I lost everything.....

I was VERY excited the day I found out the use of the Butchers War Cleaver.. and how with a single click it skinned the leathers and neatly placed the "CUT" hides into my pack.... (Unless you are overweight then the cut hides remain on the monster).... What a wonderful tool...

Found out that control + Q repeats the last thing you said and if you keep hitting it will scroll through most things you said.... (handy tool there)...

Pasting into game is as simple as copying it from anywhere and using control + V ....

I know some folk that have no idea that when they see people emoting in game that those folk aren't putting those * at the beginning and end of their text they are actually typing ":" and then a space and just typing in what they want to emote.... and emoting in game actually has it's own color.. (Though the default color for the emote is totally invisible on your journal which if any DEV is reading this needs to be FIXED!)...

Been wondering about this one. I'm always hearing people talk about the "butcher's war cleaver". Was tempted to make one, but the fact that you need a turquoise (even if you have the recipe) kinda put me off.

What other weapons work this way? I know the skinning knife does. Wouldn't mind putting together a list; I can't imagine they'd only give the ability to two weapons which are otherwise so very different...

I believe you mean "dope" not "dupe"
Yes, Dupe is usually a Dope who fell for an obvious scam, but they're both slang so I don't feel guilty for bending the use a bit. ;)

Emotes - I often get asked how I change my speech color so quickly when I do them. People not realizing there are : (emote) ; (whisper) and ! (shout) commands for text.

Cleaning out some boxes last week I found my stash of green thorns. Just to use some up I started shoving them into dirt patches and realized that 1 thorn-plant worth of thorns will grow enough fertile dirt and reagents to grow another 6-10 plants with tons of leftover regs.
And that by logging all my characters at the Inn at Delucia, I can do them one after the other all day if I want.

I'll never buy reagents again! :D

Until last month, I thought only archers or ninja could use a fukiya.

If this thread goes on for a while, and we get more of the Good Info, I may turn it into a RAQ(Rarely Asked Questions) for the Players' Corner.
It is bringing up those things nobody ever thinks to ask about, but most would love to know.

And /LOVE butchers war cleaver too. I just wish they would fix the weight dead end on them. If you are holding 320 stones of weight, they leave the leather on the corpses even if you can hold 530.

I like to think of myself as knowing more than most about this game but heres one that I bet most people had me beat.

I knew if you pressed Ctrl Q it would repeat the last thing you types BUT it took me 10 years to realize if you pressed it twice it would say the thing you said before that lol

You have no idea how many times I sat at the bank spaming to sell stuff and not wanting to talk to anyone else because id have to type in everything again, I even had typed up some macros on stuff I was selling.

you can also press Ctrl and W and it will cycle the other way too.

the butchers war cleaver skins, cuts the hides into leather and plops it into your back pack if you kill the monster/cow with it, the skinning knife doesnt do the last one.

Do you mean to say that simply killing a creature with the cleaver is enough to have the leather placed in your pack? I admit that's not true of the knife, though if you manually skin creatures with it equipped (must be equipped) you also have the cut leather picked up for you (subject to how much weight you're carrying at the time).

Here's the way they work....

Skinning Knife: Must be equipped for this function to work. Cutting the corpse after it dies, puts the leather in cut leather form into your pack.

Butcher's War Cleaver: As skinning knife, but doesn't have to be equipped.

The ability to do so with either breaks down at around 350 weight (it may be from an old piece of code dating from when the natural maximum capacity for a character was 390 from 100 STR, 400 for the backpack), but it will cut the leather, just leave it in the corpse. Neither weapon recovers bones, feathers, scales, meat, etc. that may be in the corpse normally, or as a result of cutting the corpse (but we've asked the devs to consider modifying them to at least do the feathers and scales).

Alot of the things mentioned weren't features of the original client so I'm not surprised people didn't know about them.

It took me over a year to realize there was a macro for 'open door'. That would have saved my life many, many times.

Also to cut and paste you dont need to set a macro for it. I use it all the time while making books for items I need to hand to people simply by going to my lists here on stratics and copy paste to a book in UO by using Ctrl C for Copy and Ctrl V for paste.

And Ive been playing for 10 years too and just learned from this thread how to buy max items in one click.

i think thats what it was originally intended to do, and does sometimes, its a bit buggy, but as long as you are hacking away at what ever you want skinning and kill it with the butcher war cleaver, itll do it (sometimes)

How about did you know that if your a mage those little buttons on the side of your party members bars are for casting a heal or cure on them?

That I knew, but tbh, I rarely use them, I can cast using my macros faster than those buttons seem to take, not sure why but they're a few seconds slower than my macros. *shrugs*

thing that annoyed me was when you would drag a health bar and it would stick to something you didnt want it too, like dragging a mobs bar and it sticking to party members bars, you can hold down Alt and click, release Alt and then drag it and it would unsticky it XD

WOW, really happy i mentioned the one click buy method. I didnt want to in the first place, cause i clearly thought I was the last person to figure this out (also been around since 98´).

Btw.: thanks A LOT Ultima Online, i didnt know that there is a way to make stuck bars unstick again.

Well I'm a 8 year vet and I'm up to 92.8 inscription and complaining to a friend about having to wait for mana so I can make more lvl 8 scrolls just to raise my inscrip. She asks me why I'm wasting regs and using mana just to drop vortex scrolls on the ground when I could make BOD books!! Slaps forehead!!

Or you can make spellbooks and turn them in at the library. Save the good 3 mod ones for selling on a vendor and turn a nice profit.

Inscription - Also, when Bod Books (65 skill) get too slow, there is no reason to make 8th circle(75 skill) scrolls and wait on mana unless you're poor. Spellbook engravers are 75 skill the same as 8th circle, and just use 7 black pearls and a feather, no mana. :)

(and the right towns in Felucca sell the black pearls for 3g each)

If you copy the "macros2d.txt" file from the desktop folder of one of your character's to the root of your game install, whenever you start a new character, transfer between shards or just use the disguise kit, the "new" avatar will immediately start off with that set of macros.

Speaking of desktop files -- you have to be careful when you polymorph, incognito, or use the disguise kit. The game creates a new folder for your "new character" and saves the desktop to it. Thus, if you changed your macros or settings while in disguise you will be surprised when you log back in as your normal character.

As for the shift-select to grab all items in a purchase, that was a 3D addition that wasn't in the 2D client for a long time. It was so nice to finally get it.

I'm always mildly annoyed to see people putting roast pigs out as rares on vendors. They can be purchased from some cooks, though not all of them, so people think they are hard to find.

When meditation first came out, I had never connected the sound with the skill. Thus, the first time I was out with a sorceress friend at Terathan keep and asked her whether that noise was some new monster sound. She laughed so hard I had to run provoke a matriarch so she wouldn't get killed before she could take a breath.

Nah npcs have random level of scrolls they sell. Some go as high as 4, and when they do you can buy every single scroll of lvl 4 magic circle from them. Sometimes you got to hunt through 12 or more mages before you actually find one that sells recalls.

That will be very useful to me next time I go on a guild hunt. Thanks!

I felt like a complete dork back when I made my first chef. I had a packy full of raw fish steaks, and was cooking them one by one trying to get the max gains out of them. Only when I accidentally cooked a stack of them did I realize that gains stacked too. It made it so much easier to just cook a stack of 500 or so steaks and get .5 instead of going though 1 steak at a time looking for that .1 gain.

I also remember (way back 8 years ago, within my first week of playing) I tamed a dog. Someone told me that I'd have to stable him before I logged out or I'd lose him. So I stabled him, but kept playing for awhile and got myself lost, and I remember running all over looking for the stable I left him at because I thought that was the only one I'd be able to get him out of again.

Ahhh, the good old days.

Then you must have not been using it right....

I can 3-hit kill normal dragons with that weapon, by using enemy of one, and making the first & 3rd hits Armor Ignore specials. I can even kill greaters and AW with it, but that involves a lot of hit and run tactics.

Now, The Dragon Slayer Doom arti, on the other hand, does suck....
