I know ill miss out on the "best" part of mining(gems) but will I miss out on the worst too "BRE"?

I've asked the same question. Guess what....
I got about the same kind of answer. Nothing really concrete. That's kinda makes me feel that no one really knows 100%.
My char was mining on a boat and got popped by the dreaded BRE. He is less than GM. BUT, he is just over GM with +5 gloves. I'd like to get up to 99.9 and use the gloves for 104.9 when smithing/smelting/enhancing/BOD gathering when hoping for Gems.
So, lock it at 99.9 and go mine for a long while. Come back and give us a report.

I hope you have good luck in both not seeing a BRE and getting GM.
I have a char that GM'd years ago. When gains went slow, I would take 2 pieces of small ore and smelt it. I could almost swear that I used copper to GM that guy.
I have two other Chars that are like 92 and 97. I have plenty of +5 gloves, so I'm not far from having at least minimum GM on both, with gloves.
So, if mining gets you bored, try stacking 2 small ores in the corner of your backpack. Use UOAssist and make a macro to USE a 2 piece pile and make it a USE TYPE and then make the TARGET, your forge.
Don't make the 2 piece ores pop into a larger pile. Drop them at the top corner and they'll slide down and rest in the pack. I hope that was clear enough?
Edit: UO Assist, won't play that macro using the ore as an Item Type. It used to, but I just tried it and I get an error message.

Thx everone this has been helpful. i think im going for the 104.9 lock with the gloves and just not use em for mining unless im hunting up ele with a gargoyles pick and my trusty 30ssi earthy slayer crossbow. But as thats rare Id like to be able to mine free(save for the last gm through my cave rune book) of BRE!

Upon reaching 99.9 in ANY skill, I HIGHLY recommend planning & organizing a "ceremony," where friends and peers are invited, even those who reached the summit afore thee.
Plan an appropriate ceremony for when you will seek the final gain. Be sure you have ample Fame to display your newly gained GrandMaster Title.
Such an achievement is worth such ceremony and acknowledgement.
Make it a Very Memorable Gain.
Write about it in a book, have those present sign that book w/their comments.
Seal that book with a red leaf and never lose your last copy of it.
Make this wondrous game full of wondrous achievements, recorded in Tomes for all time. Display such Tomes somewhere.
Congrats when ya get there.

I have 98.something mining. Wearing +5 gloves, I get gems, but I have yet to dig up a BRE
