8x8 still work?

Old time player here but havnt played in a long time (bout 4-5 years now) started back up.... wondering if 8x8 still works? Trying to level up spirit speak to 120 and its taking aggeessss. currently at 109.6. gains are very few and far between. Ive tried doing curse weapon almost nonstop, and also just using spirit speak itself. gains seem about the same..which is very slow to say the least.

Im using a good training suit, 40% LMC, 100% lrc, Mana regen 11, and FC2, FCR 5.

any way to move this along? i'd rather not spend weeks getting from 110ish to 120.

8x8 is many years dead.

Go to the Twisted Weald. Get a Dryad to Discord you (drops all your skills and resists by maybe 28.0). Invis or run away to lose agro. Then stay near the Dryad otherwise the Disco will time out.

From 109.6 you could drop to 81.6 (depends on the Dryad's Disco level) and gain a lot faster!

hmm. i'll give that a shot!

Are there any sites that have some updated info on UO skill gaining... and just well...anything i guess. Uoguide has some decent info, but much of it is very non specific.

No, 8x8 has been removed with pub 39 (early 2006) “Streakiness” in the random number generator should be improved. As a side effect “8x8” will no longer work."

For me the advice on uoguide worked pretty good:

Spirit Speak will raise when Necromancy spells are cast. If you are training a Necromancer it is best to let Spirit Speak raise passively until you finish training. Once Necromancy is at the level you want, the quickest way to raise Spirit Speak is:

1. Turn into Lich Form if able.
2. Summon a Shadow Wisp if able.
3. Wear 40% Lower Mana Cost, 2 Faster Casting, and 6 Faster Cast Recovery.
4. Wear as much Mana Regeneration as possible.
5. Equip a weapon.
6. Cast Curse Weapon over and over.

Movement is not necessary to gain.

*edit* Just saw the advice with discording. I might be wrong but I think the Dryads will only peace you, the Satyrs are the one who discord. Anyway, it's a good advice, though. Maybe you can combine both methods.

satyrs are in the same area?

btw I just went there and got owned about 15 times by pixies =/

found the stryrs... yeah he just did peacemaking on me. no discord.
that whole area is lethal... can easily die in a matter of seconds from all the casters.

haha yeah im done there... freaken death trap.

You have negative karma. If you go in with positive karma, nothing in the first area will aggro on you (some of the stuff deeper will--the shapeshifters or whatever they're called come to mind).

yeah i realize that.... sucks since im about as negative as you can possibly go. and need it that way for necro.

/le sigh.
haha

Sorry for not considering your negative karma :wall: But I must confess I burst out laughing in imagination of your face as you walked in there

Just go back to step 1: cast Curse Weapon a few (zillion) times ;)

I started cranking a Necro on Origin the other day. Amazing how fast the karma drops. Despicable in under an hour - loafing!

Wow am I glad I read this thread. I'm one of those guys that played a lot from 1999-2002, took a long break, and then came back last December. I GMed magery using 8x8 back then on another shard. So I came back, went to a new shard, and started a mage. He's currently at 108.4 magery (scrolled to 110). I have been using a spell channelling katana that drops skill by 29. But even then, the whole boat 8x8 thing was going so slow. Now I know why!

What do you all recommend as a method? I'm thinking of using the katana (puts my skill at 79.4), grabbing my Earth El slayer spellbook (with no + magery skill), heading to Shame, and casting a billion energy bolts using a 100% LRC suit. At least then I will make money as I slowly gain. The fizzles will probably drive me nuts in combat, but I guess it will work. Once I eventual get my 120 scroll, I can only imagine what I'll have to do to go from 110 to 120. I guess the same thing except with flamestrikes.

Got any better methods to gain magery?

That's about the best way to do it. I have a -30 bokuto that I used. I actually just stood in one spot spamming spells...but your method at least makes you money.

Well, one major flaw in my plan... I can't equip both a spellbook and a negative mage skill weapons. Doh!

Anyway, I ran around Shame for about 45 min at an effective skill of 79.5 magery spamming E-bolt. Nothing, not a single magery gain.

I died yesterday from a Paragon Efreet (long story) so maybe that will help reset me. I hadn't died in a long time. Maybe that will get me unstuck. Of course, I may just have to scroll up to 115 to get some movement. I'm working to save the cash now, but it's a lot.

Just an FYI the spellbook needs to be held for the slayer property to work, not happening when holding a weapon, IE your handy dandy kat.

Well, I gave up on trying to cast and gain... so I did the next best thing... started swinging a weapon... a mage weapon that is. So my skill had been stuck at 108.5. It is now at 109.0 after a night of killing Earth Elementals. I'll take it! I am perplexed why I could not gain while casting, but if I can gain while swinging a weapon, then I'll make it work. My dex sucks so I have to find a mage weapon with a fast swing speed and ssi. So far so good. I have my dex set to gain and my intel to fall, but it won't go down while the only skill I'm gaining on is magery.

Magery is easy and fast now.

Get a 100% poison damage mage weapon. After the weapon is armed, and after jewels/talisman you need to be at 70+ magery.

Swing on an arctic ogre lord or Golem. The faster the wep the better, but just wear a stam suit.

It goes much quicker than casting.
