First of all, let me say, i currently run a 70 resist suit, and still die a lot.

I know some armor abilities are important to stack up, in both pvp and pvm.
mana regen
lower mana
w/e else your template needs

my question is, how much resist should you sacrifice for your needed buffs?

Is it better to go for 40-50 resist? or do you still want to focus on getting 60+?

There could be several reasons for this that aren't armor related. Weapon choice is just an example. I had a problem when I first started playing UO with not having enough mana regen on my suit, which ended up making the character weak overall due to constantly running out of mana.

As a rule in PvM, I've always drawn the line at 60 as the lowest I'll accept in resists, and even then I'll make a conscious effort to find a way to get it up to at least 65. High end monsters hit too hard to have anything any lower than 60, otherwise they'll end up 1 or 2 hit killing you.

I would say never ever try to take on anything from dragon level on up with a suit that has 40-50 resist on it. Doing so would pretty much guarantee a quick death.

in PvP I would recommend the following as a minimum:

70 Phys
75 Fire
60 Cold
75 Poison
60 Energy

Curse takes you down to 60s anyways, and most of the time you will be cursed. 75 fire/poison to make you corpse proof. Anything on top of what is listed above is just extra.

In PvM I only do peerless and usually solo, so I say all 70's ... if you do other types of PvM you could probably get away with less but I couldn't tell you for sure.

For PvM if you are having problems with getting killed in an all 70's suit, I assume you are a dexxer...since, archer you shouldn't have this problem so much and you woulda posted in another thread if not a warrior :D

Anywho, anything around 60 or higher is good. If you are a dexxer you should try to have 70 physical since most mobs inflict physical based damage. Aside from that Greater Dragons and Ancient Wyrms you are going to have to have high fire as well as GOOD fighting tactics.

Essentially you want something like this:

70/70/60/60/60

Energy bolts might be a problem for you, but in your case I would try to get those 2 the highest. Spell casting mobs almost always follow an energy bolt with a fire based spell or vice versa.

Concentrate on pieces with MR followed by LMC followed by mana increase.

In the event that you need other stats (stamina increase, etc.) you will have to take that into consideration based on what armor pieces you have or can aquire.

Pretty much as long as you are at 60 and higher you will have an okay suit.

You might additionally want to look at how your stats are setup. Higher hit points can help your survivability if you can afford to move a couple points. A couple of points in any area...can make a difference.

what are your skills? i had a dexxer with just chivalry and without healing and died alot in PvM. I have 100 healing now and chug potions to get my healing to 4 seconds and this made a huge difference.

When I first came back to UO after several years away, I bought a full virtue set. The armor was blessed and had all 70s resists. Great, right?

Wrong!!

Back in the olden days, we could get away with wearing full plate crafted my a GM smith. Not anymore. In today's battlefield, mods are absolutely vital to your success as a player. Mods can certainly mean the difference between life and death.

As a result of this trend, it's much more challenging - not to mention expensive - to piece together a decent suit of armor, especially for a dexxer, who really needs to have good resists.

As a pally/dexxer, mana regen, lmc, HCI, DCI, and DI are an absolute must, especially if you use chiv healing with any degree of regularity.

Also, not sure if this is applicable, but one of my pet peeves is pallies with focus instead of meditation. Focus = stam regen and a tiny bit of mana regen. Meditation = lots of mana regen. Divine Fury = instant stam regen. Hence, meditation + divine fury = optimal for a pally. And in light of the fact that most decent armor is medable anyway, why not use med instead of focus?!

Obviously, this isn't applicable for a dexxer with 120 bush/parry, 75 chiv, and 90 healing/anatomy. You won't have room on your template, in this case, for mediation and you can heal via healing anyway.
