Used to be able to sell the moonstones to NPCs once upon a time and get back colored stackable pumice. Not sure if that particular one is from that or the current bug. Not sure on price, but I imagine a mil or two. The current bug hit pumice pretty hard.
Unless there is another method that I am unaware of, the stealing bug (which has actually been around for many, many years) only works on items that can be stacked BEFORE being stolen (like sand, thorns or leaves.) Since moonstones are not stackable until after being turned back into "pumice" it would not be possible via the stealing bug. You are correct about the selling to NPCs, but that was a long time ago as well (at least 6 or 7 years ago) and was only possible using a 3rd party "tool" (NPCs wouldn't buy moonstones normally) which was patched fairly quickly.
