i say every 10 yrs there is a big monster game that will take ppls attention. uo was the first to do this yes but now games are going faster and big than the last one.. next was Everquest , this game out and had alot of attention due to the things u can do with the graphics, to this day the game is still hanging in there. W.o.W (world of warcraft) is the next big thing in the gaming world that smash the leaderboard for many yrs and yet still going pretty good. there are some games between these ones i mentioned to do well but.. most that stuck out.

Now with all that said, alot of ppl in the gamers community are waiting on the next big game to be Elder Scrolls Online. Uo had yet competed with alot of games and held there ground in the subscription games for that past id say 13 yrs, but will ESO be the stake that kills this long lived vampire (uo)? ESO is due out in spring 2014.

Now being a 15 yr paying subscriber it will be sad to let go of all those good times.

this thread isnt to hurt uo community but maybe help it out so i ask all uo subscribers to post ONE thing to help uo team fix before its to late.

I have seen no evidence that UO is on "a dying countdown." Not keyed to Elder Scrolls Online or any other game.

Elder Scrolls Online will kill UO the same way that Shadowbane did.

When UO does finally get shut down, almost all business ventures fail sooner or later, it'll be wholly unrelated to proclamations such as this one. However, the last person who happens to make such a proclamation will point to it and say "sEe? 1 wA5 R16ht N0oB5!!!"

I highly doubt ESO is going to be the thing that kills UO. On a side note I suspect anyone who is hoping for "Skyrim but with my friends" is going to be very disappointed with it given the direction the game has taken (which seems somewhat cookie-cutter to me and why I've no interest in the game despite being a big Elder Scrolls fan).

UO is slowly losing players (and eventually EA will axe it if the trend isn't reversed) but I don't see it closing down anytime in the near future. And it won't be because of ESO.

As long as EA has anything to do with UO it will stay on that ever decreasing track imho. The best thing that could ever happen to UO is for EA to sell it off, have someone that actually gives a dang about the game buy it and go from there. Probably will never happen, but I can dream can't I? ;)

Well from the looks of it, increasing the number of players should be a top priority. How that comes about, is a real good question.

So far there is no other game yet that can even hold a candle to the content of UO..... Sure WoW has BIG worlds and Pretty images... but when you get down to it WoW like all other games like it are one big series of quests holding your hand and telling you what move to make and when to make it.... till it all comes TO AN END... that's the problem with most those games.... They have a clear path... set before you from the second you chose your character to the end of your get all you can end... Once it is over what do you have? A fully maxed char with all your pretty shiny wares and NOTHING to do... and no where to go.

UO has no beginning..... no end.... it is what you make of it... Your imagination is the only thing that holds you back. You can say you've done it all but you'd be lying. Have you taken on a Shadow Wyrm in the depths of Destard in nothing but GM armor? I highly doubt it... Have you tamed the greater dragon without using some silly skill to keep you "safe"? Walked up to one and boldly said "I've always wanted a friend like you"... No Honor, No Ethereal Voyage... just brazen balls.... and maybe an invis?

Very few other worlds allow you to not only build your own home and decorate it but allow you to make it whatever you desire... from hideous eyesore to grand palace.... Even fewer allow you to actually let anyone you want enter your "home".

Nothing has ever held my attention (And I do have ADD) like UO. I can play 50 characters or more..... across a dozen shards if I like... if I get bored of taming stuff I can go hunt, gather or kill... I can sail the seas and fish if I want to relax... there is little to stop you from enjoying 100's of different activities.... the combinations of skills are astounding..... even if some have little to no value...

And few games on the market allow for the wide range of RP you can have in UO. Because of it's sandbox nature you can do most anything your imagination can think up.

That is what keeps me here.... that is what will keep me here.... not the pretty pixels... not the DEV's... (Though Mesanna does a good job of making me want to stay)... Not the EM's. Even though I do very much enjoy what they bring to my box... it's also the community. There is nothing like it.

If UO dies it will be because EA failed it... but that too is a possibility... since it's QUITE obvious that EA hasn't clue one what UO is all about or why we love it. They don't have a clue how to run a game company and IMO they have only succeeded at some things by mere happenstance... how they've blundered their way to where they are I'll never know because it sure hasn't been thru loyalty of their customers because I'd just as soon spit on them as I blast out the door than stay with them... If they didn't have such a strangle hold on the game I love I wouldn't ever care if they folded tomorrow. They are the WORST company ever when it comes to customer service... What other company does NOT want you to buy stuff and give them money??? For the life of me I can not understand why they would want to make buying their products so freaking outrageously difficult. Makes you want to knock them upside the head sometimes and go... "BIFF!".... numbskulls!

If you want to get realistic for a moment when people talk about one game killing another in the context of taking so much of the player base away that it leaves the former game an empty shell of its former self then something DID kill UO. We had so many people playing every housing spot was crammed full on 3 huge facets across all the servers. Now many servers you can run quite a few screens in Malas without seeing a single 18x18 where once it was packed wall to wall and keep spots sit open. Nothing will turn it around, such is the nature of things. Things grow old and die, new things spring up in its place. For the moment though there are still enough of us around to keep it going.

I think it could come back. There are enough nostalgics out there to make it happen.... HOWEVER... so long as it's in EA's hands buried never to be found it will NEVER grow. EA pretends it doesn't exist. It has dropped it on Mythic and Mythic doesn't care... It's not advertized anywhere... doing searches for things like RPC games and such doesn't even bring it up on the EA website...

Look at new things and you will NOT see the Kings Collection... or anything UO. EVER. It's all Sims and sports. That's it.

So long as UO is in the hands of incompetent people who run EA.... then it will remain as in the state that it's in. Until such time as either EA corporate actually pulls it's blinders off and sees UO for the diamond in the rough that it is or they finally just cut the purse strings to UO and sell it to someone who might give 2 ****s about it... it will continue to barely subsist as it has.

I keep hoping someone in EA Corporate will come along and polish the ole Gem.

beginning to think when its quiet in Stratics the nervous nellies show up on a visitor tag and toss this question in the bin and hope to see it fly off the handle... Might I suguest to the Mod in guard this be locked. I understand its their right to ask and all but its the 4th and before the guns go off tonight and drive my animals nutz I'd like some peace and quiet.
UO is still here and doing fine... No we don't plan to let it slip away into the night and off the radar. In fact I have seen more players on and a few mind you are young...

I don't think any one game has or will kill UO, it's a combination of all the new offerings, time moving forward and UO staying largely the same for years and incompetent management.

And quit burying your head in the sand, UO is hardly doing fine. Doing well enough to stay on life support, sure.

Finally, an original, thought-provoking thread. Things are so much better when people like gunsmoke take it upon themselves to help out the uo community.

His obvious insight and careful study of the issues really do set him apart from the hoi polloi. We should heed his dire warnings -else he may cease dispensing his sage advice.

To that end, I would like to suggest that new threads made on stratics accounts with the rank of 'visitor' should be reviewed before posting.

For me, personally, Shroud of the Avatar means more than ESO and is more likely to take me away from UO for good. As I've stated before, it comes down to how good SotA is when it releases vs if UO can get the needed updates to the EC within the same timeframe.

In the meantime, UO, for me, is in maintenence mode and I'm more actively playing Path of Exile.

Ok... some valid points about UO not "dying", there are enough hardcore vets who will keep it from dying.... but, I do not think anyone can come remotely close to saying UO is even in the same city as the ballpark when it comes to thriving.

Siege Perilous seem to get more players now with the changes to house rules. I don't think UO is dying and the devs we have now are slowly repairing that damage AoS and other old publics did to the game.
I believe something need to be done with the economy on normal shards but that is a hard task to do without making someone quit.
I hope the new V vs V will work and I hope they will keep in mind, that they need to make PvP'ers and non PvP'ers get along and build community together just like we see on Siege. I do believe this V vs V should work on all facets and reds should be allowed to go to Trammel zone but not being able to attack there. If they was in V vs V too, they could PvP inside the system and in guildwars.

I don't think many games out there gives that feeling of a world and not just a game, a least people keep coming back to UO, telling they never found something like the first years of UO.

This question was posed every single time another big game was in production. The fact that UO is still here today just be answer enough. There is much to be said about why this game is in the state it is now though, and the other big mmo games are the least of the worries.

UO will shut down at some point, but it certainly won't be at the hands of The Elder Scrolls Online. It will be a cumulative effect of age, mismanagement, and competition. There is nothing about TESO that sounds groundbreaking to me. What I have heard so far really sounds like The Old Republic game mechanics in an Elder Scrolls setting.

I have a 16 year old Siamese named Microchip... mike for short.
A 7 year old MaineCoon named Tinerbell, tink for short.
And just in the last month or so my kids lost their dog to illness and were missing him sooooo they went looking for a puppy for each of them.......
Lets just say here I was with one big dog who thought he had a phd in getting his way....... now I have 2, mind you 2 lab puppy's. Nala and Kessa.
Who have taken to chewing up EVERYTHING. Son has lost 1 pair of sneakers and half a pair of flip flops.... Daughter in law has lost battle with them for couch space and they keep stealing her carry bag and hauling it to the living room to dump.... Toes are not on the menu but they have chewed on just about everyone's that was not carefull to watch the little devils. Oh they get smacked for doing bad... but how can you swat too much the tush of a sad faced little one who knows they are doing bad and cry.....
OI I swear... then the 4th of july is here......... I live north of Los Angeles..... need I say more? Guns and fireworks went off..... talk about hiding under my skirts! and then I read this... the OP is a visitor... and out ot make another go at shooting down the one game I have played for 16 years strait... and I am to sit here and let him kick it in the teeth...
HELL NO that's my job....
UO is stable not on life support for 1.
Second UO's dev are doing fantastic for the small number of them that is left to do it.
Thought many of you are right in asking how we doing but I think the better question is how can WE make it something other will want to come back to.

I mean it... you cant expect EA to change its spots after all these years.. that's like asking the skin flint oil tycoon to give the poor a crust of bread off his table... its not gunna happen.

We all know old players many are on our old icq's and other contact ways of old... get them out see if any are on... and give them a yip. Don't promise them nada but invite them for a month to see the new stuff... 12.99 is not much to pay for a month of good times.... its less then a ticket to a movie.

Stop talking your heads off whats wrong... and start talking of whats right... pesamisim we don't need optomisim we do. (I know they are misspelt but you get my drift so stop taking it off the subject)
Get to work and drag that old friend back get yoru friends to try a time with you hunting stuff... you don't need pvp all the time to have fun.... heck have a dig fest or a wood chopping gathering party.... hell just get them in and having fun... UO can infect them and we just might have a growth spurt.

UO isn't really in a healthy place. No game will "kill" it, though. If people were gonna move on from UO to other games, they'd have done it long before now. Some even have and returned, a lot have and haven't looked back.

Realistically, EA probably only retains UO for the bragging rights of having the longest running MMO on their books. It may still be marginally profitable helped in part due to the store item sales but that's unlikely to be anything significant in EA terms. Perhaps they'd have closed it long ago because it isn't worth the hassle without these things being in consideration.

Anyway, UO will never truly die. Even if the official servers one day close, that will be far from the end of the game.

I think shard transfer shields and the faction nerf were two big things that drained some of the secondary shards of players. most transfer whats worth selling to atl now and at least for pvp it is the most active of all the shards. factions allowed pvp'rs the abilities to maintain top end toons on all shards. now it is quite a costly undertaking to build and suit up high end toons on more than one shard.

If anything kills UO it will be the continued mismanagement and rotating door of people heading it up (anyone wants to hedge bets how much longer Jeff is going to be around?).

I see most of the current fan base extremely loyal to this product. Even if I do leave it to play Shroud of the Avatar (which Starr Long at long last officially announced today)- I'll still keep 2 of my accounts active for when/if I return.

Yes we don't have 7 figure player base like WoW....
Yes we don't have a huge budget to have top programmers and the like working night and day to put out stellar publishes.
and
Yes we have a game that is in essence 16 + years old and has been showing its age for a long time.
This is all true..................
Now for what is right with UO.
We have a dev that cares be it small. it has put out at decient intervals publishes that have added content we asked for...
We have a game that is multi dimentional meaning it can be slow or fast as we want just by adding a few friends to the mix
We have a true mix of cultures in the game... players from all over the world play our game... did you know that?
We are a icon of the gaming world just for our guts to stay a viable game where others are more sparkly and hi-tech in graphics and all most of them are loosing ground faster then us!
We have options of shard and time to fit our own REAL LIFE time fraim. No one can say they cant log in when they want and go accomplish so much in a few minutes.
We have US. The most powerful group of players in the gaming industry... we are die hard UO players.

We all have played other games... Wow, eve, DoaC, Warhammer, EQ and all its versions, and so many more. What do we all have right now going on? UO.
Look many who quit back 3 to 15 years ago didn't stick around to see what some of us have. So get on the phone or what ever you know them by and icq them or e mail them and invite them back...
You could also drop a word in some of those "uo wana be" places and invite them to the real thing...
We live on, we didnt die like they said we would..... we are legendary, we are UO's people.

If you know doubters tell them they walked away from history... a childs movie ticket and they got 1 full month of play in a world of friends.... at their convience not some mega conspericy to eat up their day and money. (we all know EA has trouble taking ours hahahahha)

Look lets be honest... UO will be here a long time. They might not say numbers of players but with the actual fact we are still here is telling enough.

EA works for the investors not its paying public... the layoffs told us that.
Wouldn't you think if UO was that bad off we would have been cut off in a flash if we didn't make $$ cha ching?

IMO its the only way. Advertising and all that ain`t gonna do it. How would the commercial look on TV? Hey! Come play our 15 year old game! Its better than ever! No amount of advertising is going to bring people to UO. Making it easily accessible and affordable to anyone who wants to play would bring alot of people back and alot of new players in.

Well from the looks of it, increasing the number of players should be a top priority. How that comes about, is a real good question.

It is clearly NOT a priority for the dev team. Name one single feature/change/update that was done to favor/attract new players in the past 2 years? 720 skill cap? Its gonna take waaaay more thinking than that.

Well the only way they are maintaining profitability is to cut costs and dev members. Outsourcing the servers and cutting the dev/EM/GM team from about 70 to about 7 is one way. However, they dont' have much wiggle room now with about 7 ppl maintaining the game. You can't cut much further.

I could not disagree more with this. My $10/month x 2 accounts has NOT brought me ANY change in the past year that I have asked for or enjoyed.

City elections? Who asked for that?
Armor refinements? Who asked for that?
Change in targeting? Who asked for that?

Take those 3 changes. How in the world does that make gameplay better for existing players? *scratches head*

And I can guarantee it will NOT bring any new players to the game. At all. Ever.

I view all of these as major fails in wasting our very precious resources on things that do not matter or make the game better. How is my gameplay better by making it so that players want to wear some chain mail vs leather? How in the heck does that even matter?

When you have unlimited time and resources to burn - you do silly stuff like this. When you have a game dying on the vine - you don't waste time watering the road. Water the roots.

Theo_GL I could say your one in a hill of beans..... that cant find any good in what has been done.
You base your full thought on "What have you done for ME" and I learned this early in life the ME bit is not how it goes.
It is sad that many young people were given awards for nothing to boost their self esteem, when they now feel they are DUE for their breathing, something of worth.

What do you give to people that would not upset the apple cart too much that would not take 6 years to rebalance???
That is the ultimate question the Dev have to ask themselves every time they sit down to plan a publish for new content.
Which we do ask for ALOT.
The cat is out of the bag as far as arties is concerned... you cant just wipe them off and say they are now deco only we are going back to original set up of crafted armor and stuff from year 1. The masses would have a kniption fit and fall in it with that announcement and then the mass exodus for the door.... Or any other publish for that matter.
ITs too late to untangle it from the rest no matter how hard we want it to go away.

So You think it is easy to balance this juggling mess of new and old do you?

Oh baby have I got a job for you... cause you see the world has been trying it for thousands of years and they still don't have it down.
I bet they would want to know your secret!
No Secret??
Then don't squeek up and listen jr.
This dev team had nothing to do with the past fiasco's dumped on UO players and have had it's disaster filled leavings drop in their laps after years of mis-direction.
And you sit there and chide them for it?
Get off your high horse and try looking at it from all angles... put yourself in others shoes so to speak.

We need better content that's a given for this age of players who want instant gratification and are not willing to work long hours to get it. Remember most are not on home based computers these days the tablet or ipad are the toy of choice. Sad to think one day the home computer will be gone and all we will have is a tiny pad to use... but time marches on and as the old get tossed, the new rise from the phoenix's ashes.

Look base line is... if you never tried it don't knock it. It just maybe more then a mouthful if you bite too fast.
How do you eat an elephant?
1 bite at a time.

Here I'm not talking specifically about UO, but the home PC won't disappear for a very long time. It'll just transform, and all the kids who love their portable devices now will eventually learn that they don't facilitate productivity. There's still something to be said for a full-sized monitor and keyboard, for the superior audio and video hardware, so "all we will have" won't happen as long as consumers still want PCs. Website traffic shows that PCs are still 4-to-1 over tablets and smartphones combined.

As long as we have UO and other games of rich content, tablets won't be enough. Diablo-style games have been fun on my Android tablets, but I've yet to try one with the player interaction of a PC-based MMORPG. No chat, no trading items, just using my finger to scroll through the offers of multiplayer games.
