If you could add more playable races to UO, what would they be?

Honestly, 15 years later and we only have 3 playable races while most games get 10-15 playable races... Talk about a slow moving progress..

I would love to see Meer, Juka, Dwarves and Orcs as playable races if they did create more as well as Dark Elves AKA: Drow, even though you can give your elf dark skin, Drow were never apart of the Ultima lore, although it would have been nice to see Drow and High Elves as separate races..

So.. I wanna say..

Dwarves
Orcs
Meer
Juka
Goblin
Minotaur
Goliath(giants)
Halfling

Yeah, I would be happy with this..

I'd personally like it to go back to just humans... It'd never happen, but I wish it could, for the following reasons:

1) Assets - Animation and artwork has to be done for every object for every race (If they can equip.. more on that soon). Instead of spending that time on 3 variations of the same thing, imagine if they could focus on making just that 1 asset better. That 1 animation better. More design and quality into the design of the one race.

2) Development - Now items, skills, and racial all have to be factored and balanced across the 3 races. Not to mention debugged.

3) Consistency - I know in single player canon, there were references to other races. But it didn't start out that way with UO. I just think the world would feel more consistent and rich if it focused on the human element, rather than trying to balance in elves and gargoyles as anything more than foes. Kinda Game of Thrones-ish.

And don't get me started on themes and skills. Paladins and Necromancers, fine.. But NINJA'S? I don't seem to recall in any UO game where a Ninja popped up.

I would like for them to add in the following order:

Meer
Juka
Orcs

As for Drow we already sort of have them as I play one... but since MANY folk do play Drow they should add more Drow like things..... and Underground where we can build and live... Drow weapons, Drow abilities and Drow Armor... Making them even more playable.... build a drow city or two and implement the idea I gave Cal for a Drowish champ spawn...

But before they do ANY of that they need to finish what we do have...

Add more content and spawn to the overland in Malas and Tokuno...

Add more quests to both Malas and Tokuno...

Add more things to the Elves and allow more interaction and perhaps even expand the Elven city.... to be more of a City.

Finish Ter Mur.... adding more gargoyle content and quests.

Add more to the Underworld and Abyss.... Expand the Abyss another level.

Add at least one or two more Dungeons to Fel/Tram for the Ogres (Build them a city/Dungeon) and Trolls.... Give the Orcs a City/Fort when they add Orcs as a race.

Fix Gypsies and have them buy and sell things... in random spawns that are more "fixed" where people can't place housing and they don't interfere with it. Make the Gypsie camps more fun and interesting.

Add a Pirate Cove to Bucs Den.... Give it some shops and things that sell unique items to sailors who dare go there...

Add in a better loyalty system.... folk loyal to the Meer should get to buy special things from the Meer....

Folk loyal to the Juka should NOT be attacked by the Juka..... and should be able to purchase Jukan crafted items and such...

Give unique things and perhaps recipes to each town... allowing folk to get more unique items and unique craftables from the city they are loyal to.

Don't forget PLAYER run cities..... give us something to be loyal to OUR OWN cities for..... Give us the ability to add a BANKER, STABLE and other things Tailor and smith shops to OUR OWN towns.

Expand the City loyalty to include Umbra, Tokuno, Luna (I know, I know Luna sucks down with Luna!), Nu'Jelm, Delucia, Papua.... etc... Believe it or not many folk LOVE those towns too.... and would rather be loyal to them.

Fix the loot system to be more "logical"..... Do something about the way Stone, Wood and Ingots are gathered.... I know how to get the leather I need.... I can't get the other supplies I need without being a Scripting Bot or having the patience of a Saint... and more time than the average Joe.

Oh, oh, I forgot I made that thread! Silly me.. But.. That was a poll though on what people thought the next race should be.. Clearly, Orcs won that battle..

I agree with this:
actually is unthinkable to add new races... the game needs to be consolidated, there is a serious player loss and a big part of the game contents became old faster than they can renew it.

Hmmm...

Meer
Orcs
Juka

Now if EA wanted to get creative and bring some Cross-Game races for people who sub to multiple games...

Then I could see adding

Dwarves
Miraluka
Rattataki

Adding orcs won't bring back Shadowclan or any of the old orc guilds. The die was cast for them with AOS.
If any new race is added, PLEASE no more race only requirements on stuff.

Exodus cyborgs :)

But I prefer to go back to just humans, and indeed drop the race requirements on items.

None. I just want to be able to put human hair on my elf character. I only have one, and that's probably why, lol.

Mythic could add orcs, meer and juka as playable races with minimal art updates. The basic human form with a new skin for the CC paperdoll (and skin color choices) and maybe a few semi-obvious cranial tweaks to an unhelmeted head. (ear tweaks for meer, slightly wider head for juka, tusks for orcs) The EC client already has skins for all three races, they just need to activate the ingame avatar changes. Leave wearable art as it is, just create racial variants - a leather plain dress for meer women, buffed ringmail and axes for orcs, fancy bows and staves for juka, etc. (Just don't bind them only to those specific races. We get why humans/elves can't wear wing armor and talons, but why can't humans wear leaf armor or an elven robe?)

It may not be as "well rounded" as the gargoyles, but they’d be a neat addition nonetheless.

They would actually add quite a bit to the depth of the game.

I'd love to know the real story behind the elf expansion. I remember reading from an ex staff member that High Seas was being worked on but then it was shelved in favour of Mondain's Legacy at short notice.

That does make sense, because you should never see a ninja, even when he's attacking! ;)

I vote for Meer. I'd suggest enhanced spellweaving abilities, but would players really be keen enough on that? Maybe a combination of magery and spellweaving, with the price of penalties to resists (say -5 or -10).

Meer, Juka, Undead, and several other races are already available in the Enhanced Client and done the way UO Player Races should have been done to begin with... as a cosmetic difference only.

I don't know all. Looks like the Pandas have it. Personally, I've always wanted the rat men or lizard men to truly have their day...

I'd like to see most of the UO races already in game, available as playable races:

Ophidian
Terathan
Meer
Juka
Orc
Savage
Lizardmen
Yomotsu

I personally would like to play as ophidian and learn more about their history and culture.

As much as I would like to see new playable races added to the mix, I think they need to fix up the existing playable races first. Players need to be able to have the freedom to change their characters and suit them up as they see fit. Every playable race needs to have a conversion quest and the equipment limitations need to be worked out.

My biggest gripe right now is the focus on "race specific equipment". It was a terrible idea to prevent the use of equipment because of the playable race you chose. Allow us to alter items to meet a specific race's needs. If there is a doom gauntlet artifact that would be suited to my gargoyle, allow me to convert it. If I want to wear spell woven britches on a human, allow me to convert it. Item altering has so much unused potential when it comes to providing equipment to ALL playable races. Before any new playable races are even introduced, they need to fix item altering and decide on a strategy to appeal to all playable races.

Ridable Dragon. Takes me back to Tribes II with the tank. One chose the path the other fought.

Orc with the glider wings if ya couldn't tame a Worg.

Undead already have the current race numbers that are tweaked if you go dead. Race change would be drink a potion of the dead or dig your way out of a grave and crawl to the nearest Ilsh moongate for a rez.

I'd rather not. Each race addition has meant difficult choices over the race's pluses and minuses

Difficult choices does not directly relate to it being a bad thing. When difficult choices are eventually made the outcome tends to be a lot more satisfying than easy no brainer choices.

If you were one you wouldn't need to ride one.
True but I would still have to walk :p

Hmmm .. unless they also made a Skateboard Of Stability for Dragons to ride. A motorized version that is :D

That's wonderful ...so long as those races are tailored to our setting.

There are some people - RPers amongst them - who think UO is some variant on D&D. But a dozen one-dimentional races are a poor substitute for variety and human stereotypes.

It was a gimmick.

'Bout time we dropped the Morph Earring thing and got access to all equipment.
