Why cant I equip a hammer?

you cant hold and it drops to your backpack?
you cant use because you dont have skill?

You aren't talking about a carpentry hammer are you?

All the hammers currently in UO are macefighting weapons, none use swordsmanship.

Perhaps a screenshot? Maybe you have a rare.

Are you sure that you have enough strength to equip the hammer, and that you have nothing in the other hand? That should be the only thing keeping you from equipping it.

You are using the wrong fish. Try halibut instead of trout. It's a common misconception. Trouts are in fact, meant to be thrown instead of wielded.

All I know is you can't hold carp. They're for making furniture.

In the old days, for surprise and posterity, you couldn't beat fighting off a PK, on a miner, with a pickaxe... classed as a swordsmanship weapon. Ahh... the bliss! Nothing more satisfactory than an upset and embarrassed PK, having lost at the hands of a humble miner

As for fishy weaponry, would sardines be classed as projectile weapons? Would an exploding puffa fish not add a new dimension to things, as opposed to exploding pots?

Check the strength requirement to equip it?

Perhaps your strength might be too low. But if you want to use hammers, get yourself the macing skill. Swordsmanship = swords, not hammers

It only takes off uses when you use it for crafting. Using a hammer as a weapon may lower it's durability and it may break due to that.

eta: Oddly enough a tinkered hammer says it requires swordsmanship and you can't equip it.

It's been that way since at least 2003.

One of the early "exploits" of SA was tinkering the carpentry hammer tool with colored ingots, to unravel them to get residue. I don't know if that still works, but residue isn't exactly hard to get, now that SA's been out 9-10 months.
