Using poisoned darts...confused...

I have some darts that I had poisoned with greater poison. Says greater on the darts.

I tested them out on some mud things in shame with my 94 ninja and it inflicted lesser poison.

From what I have read, darts only need to be poisoned and they do not need the poisoning skill?

Am I missing something here?

Used a stone to move poisoning to my ninja and it applied the correct level this time with the dart so I guess it does need the skill now. Seems to contradict everything I have read online but maybe I am missing something.
