Upstairs "Patios"

Question:

If you do an 'indent' (sorry, wouldn't have a clue what the proper architectural term would be) on say floor 2, where there's a little open air patio, on the third floor can you build floor/housing over that area? Or can you only build over areas that are enclosed by walls?

You could, but there would have to be some sort of support.. like poles and such.

Yah usually needs support, unless its super tiny.
