if my chance to parry with a 1 handed weapon is 35% and my chance to parry with a shield is 5%; if I have both equipped do they work independtly of one another with the same percentages? IE giving me a 40% total chance to parry a blow.

If you have parry and bushido your chance to parry with a 1 handed weapon is 35%. If you use a shield your chance is 5% regardless of weapon.
