Standing orders I live by:
1. Don't forget nothing.
2. Have your musket clean as a whistle, hatchet scoured, sixty rounds powder and ball, and be ready to march at a minute's warning.
3. When you're on the march, act the way you would if you was sneaking up on a deer. See the enemy first.
4. Tell the truth about what you see and what you do. There is an army depending on us for correct information. You can lie all you please when you tell other folks about the Rangers, but don't never lie to a Ranger or officer.
5. Don't never take a chance you don't have to.
6. When we're on the march we march single file, far enough apart so one shot can't go through two men.
If we strike swamps, or soft ground, we spread out abreast, so it's hard to track us.
7. When we march, we keep moving till dark, so as to give the enemy the least possible chance at us.
8. When we camp, half the party stays awake while the other half sleeps.
9. If we take prisoners, we keep 'em separate till we have had time to examine them, so they can't cook up a story between 'em.
10. Don't ever march home the same way. Take a different route so you won't be ambushed.
11. No matter whether we travel in big parties or little ones, each party has to keep a scout 20 yards ahead, 20 yards on each flank, and 20 yards in the rear so the main body can't be surprised and wiped out.
12. Every night you'll be told where to meet if surrounded by a superior force.
13. Don't sit down to eat without posting sentries.
14. Don't sleep beyond dawn. Dawn's when the French and Indians attack.
15. Don't cross a river by a regular ford.
16. If somebody's trailing you, make a circle, come back onto your own tracks, and ambush the folks that aim to ambush you.
17. Don't stand up when the enemy's coming against you. Kneel down, lie down, hide behind a tree.
18. Let the enemy come till he's almost close enough to touch, then let him have it and jump out and finish him up with your hatchet.

*smiles*

You seem to have a historical and tactical mind.

Along those lines, I just finished reading "Washington's Crossing" by David Fischer. Was a facinating and uplifting look at a dark time in American history.

Things I Have Learned From My Cat

>^,,^< >^,,^< >^,,^< >^,,^<

1. Make the world your playground.

2. Whenever you miss the sandbox, cover it up. Dragging a sock over it helps.

3. If you can't get your way, lay across the keyboard till you do.

4. When you are hungry, meow loudly so they feed you just to shut you up.

5. Always find a good patch of sun to nap in. Nap often.

6. When in trouble, just purr and look cute.

7. Life is hard, and then you nap.

8. Curiosity never killed anything except maybe a few hours.

9. When in doubt, cop an attitude.

10. Variety is the spice of life. One day, ignore people; the next day, annoy them, and play with them when they're busy.

11. Climb your way to the top; that's why the curtains are there.

12. Make your mark in the world, or at least spray in each corner.

13. Always give generously; a bird or rodent left on the bed tells them, "I care".

Things you can learn from a dog.

Naps are essential and should be taken daily.
Playtime is important.
Every day can be an adventure.
Don't be afraid to snuggle up next to someone you love.
Don't mess with someone bigger than you.
Sometimes a bark is worse than a bite.
Too much of anything will make you sick.
Once something goes in the garbage, it should stay there.
It's hard to stay mad at something cute.
Drink lots of water.
A shady area makes a good resting place.
Looking adorable or pitiful can work in your favor.
It's nice to be taken care of.
Begging for food is okay.
Long daily walks are good exercise.
Kisses are good, even wet ones.
Accidents happen.
Play nicely with others and they'll play nicely with you.
It's okay to get excited when you see people you like.
Tummy rubs are mandatory.
Treats are wonderful and make you feel special.
Protect those you love.
Humans make good pillows.
Stop and smell the roses, the dirt, the grass...

ah speaking of cats - my cat has been bring all kinds of stuff to the back door. She first learned to open our doors and now she just lets herself out anytime we leave the doors unlocked. I find my front door open all the time now.

gonna be scary when she learns how to drive!

seriously she has now brought small birds, snakes, frogs, lizards and rats to and into our house. We have door knobs like this
