Returning player needs help

Hello fellow gamers

Today I downloaded the 14 days trial of Kingdom Reborn and it looks better that I hoped for.
I swore to myself, that I would return to Ultima when it got a graphical revamp and here I am, looking at a new client and liking it

But now, having been absent since somwhere in 1999, I have not even a clue where to start.
I mean, yes, I am reading all kinds of guides here at stratics and so, but any help, that might save me from certain no-gos that were not there few years ago, would be greatly appreciated.
For example, I don't even know, which game to buy and where once those 14 days are over.
And I keep asking myself, why I cannot start as an elf? Is KR not the collection of all previous expansions?
Is it wise to do all the starting quests and collect as much money as I can, or should I just skip them and start my fresh tamer/mage?
I mean, you get 1000g every time you start a new char.
Are the newbie tickets worth anything as they were back in the day when you got the green ranger armor set?

And lastly a specific question:
My main char (and the only one noteworthy) back in the day was a mage tamer with
taming/AL/magery/meditation/resist/wrestling/eval int and no vet
As I understand, you now need vet as a tamer to get more stable slots.
But as a mage/tamer, what would be the skill to drop? Is res still considered a must have or am I OK to go without it?

Thanks for every bit of help!

Another question comes to mind.
Would you recommend making a dedicated tamer/bard and another full mage? Or is the mage/tamer still a valid option?
I don't plan on PvPing but wold still like to have a character capable of defendig herself

The KR client is only downloadable ... with mega-patches to catch you up. There is a forum here that has a lot of info on that client.

If the 2D client is your thing, try for the 9th Anniversary edition. Even then, there will be patches to catch you up.

You must upgrade to Mondains Legacy to be able to be an Elf at startup. I believe the 9th Anniv has ML in it when you register. Not sure on KR when/if you go past the trial. I would think so, though.

Do the new player quests if you can - in KR. Honest! Also, in New Haven (Trammel version of a destroyed Occlo you would remember), there are quest-givers for nearly any major skill you can think of ... look in the FAQ here for the "Guide" on those. And a "new" account is not needed to use these ... just a new character! Buy up a skill to 40 and then go to the old town for an advanced gain area to 50!

Don't forget escorts @ 500 gp each. Also adds to Compassion virtue. Many in the Haven area are simply steps from the destination!

As for Mage/Tamer, I do believe it's viable, but what to drop for Vet I have no idea. Tamer forum is here. Also, I would think how you fashion the character is based on PvP or PvM as well. Given the right item mods and stuff, many swear Resist is not needed for PvM. I'm old-school Paladin - I want my Resist!

Welcome back into this little corner of insanity. I hope I've shed some light for you and I bet others will jump at the chance to help a returnee ... no matter for how long you are here.

Be well and safe travels!

Thanks a lot T-Amon.

I have another question regarding elves.
Wha are their specialties? Will I regret not having chosen one if I start playing my human mage/tamer now?

Head to the main UO Stratics page ... here

Scroll down a bit while watching the left-hand menu. You want "EXPANSIONS" and then "Mondain;s Legacy". In there are Races: Elven and Races: Human that explain some of the differences.

In short, humans have a Jack of All Trades (JoAT) of 20 points inate in each skill. That means a new Human Warrior has 20 Tracking, 20 Animal Lore, etc ... Humans can carry more than elves - "strongback" feature. And some other stuff.

Elves - perpetual Night Sight, +5 Energy Resist, more able to detect gems (mining) and rare woods and ores ... and more. If you are able to get one, Elves can ride Cu Sidhes (also known as pups or dogs because they look like a giant one), whereas Humans require "pads of the Cu Sidhe" to do that.

If you go with what you have now, you can always create an Elf later. Also consider there is a Human-to-Elf quest that can be taken (and the reverse).

I'd be more likely to drop wrestling - you can get better offense & defense from holding a "mage weapon" weapon these days.

Spell channeling weapons don't drop off when you cast.

Mage weapons lower your magery skill by a certain amount, but treats that lowered Magery skill as your skill in the weapon. Some crafted and looted weapons can be as low as -20. Some dirt-cheap minor artifacts are in the -15 range, and some true artifacts and event items are -0 (don't affect your magery skill at all).

There is a type of artifact that is "cursed" (not insurable or blessable) that you can get that are fairly common, but really cheap because of the curse. If you are primarily going to be fighting monsters, then pick up a cursed Staff of the Magi, and drop wrestling for vet. Seek to one day replace it with Swords of Prosperity (sell for about 2-4 million on most shards), a staff of pyros, or a real staff of the magi.

If you go for a weapon that has a magery penalty (the minor artifact staff of power, the artifact staff dropping randomly in the dungeons, or a normal weapon with SC & Mage Weapon), you can offset the skill loss with jewelry that has Magery skil bonuses. My PvM-only Chivalry Mage typically goes on group hunts where I cast two EVs, then use a -24 Mage weapon bow with spell channeling, while wearing +23 total bonus magery jewelry to fire the bow at 119 effective skill, and still be able to cast unimpeded.

The general tamer-mages these days seem to often run as the template base:

Taming/Lore/Vet Mage/Med/Eval

The skill cap of each skill can be as high as 120, depending on the level of "power scroll" for that skill that your char has consumed.

There's some more room in there to potentially fit some more skills on. Adding 55 chivalry can be nice for never failing remove curse, and I wouldn't be surprised if some people were trying mid-level spellweaving.

Didn't Discord and Peace get added after 1999? Consider a Tamer/Disco/Peacer char...very powerful and fun to play. But a lot of training!

Changing a template is no longer the very big deal it used to be. You can store a single skill on a Soul Stone simply for storage or to transfere to another character on the same account. E.g.: I "put" Magery on my Tamer so I can gate a tamed beast I can't ride.

Do you know about Pet Bonding and Pet Summoning Balls?

Nice info, keep it coming

T'Amon:
It seems like I want to be an elf.
I asked an elf ingame and he told me to just buy 9th edition. It supposedly has all other expansions and can be played with the KR client.

Basara:
OK it sounds reasonable. I will neglect wrestling for now. If I can't live without it, I can always reconsider. And thanks for the artifact info but I guess it's a far road until I acquire enough gold for one of the better ones

revenant2:
Taming/Lore/Vet Mage/Med/Eval x 120 is probably not in my reach.
It must take somwhere around 20 years to max this char?

And what about resist spells?

joblackjon:
I have no idea about pet balls but allready read about bonding.
I don't remember exactly, but we def. had bard/tamers back then. And if I'm not completly wrong, disc and peace were also ingame. However, I never really "felt" like playing a bard. Maybe you could describe the playstyle?

Another question would be, is it easier now to reach the "upper" skill levels with the new GGS or is it still a lifetime commitment?

I would drop the wrestling. I used it to find it useful on pure mages but not on tamers. I don't even know how useful wrestling is on pure mages these days. Eval is useful if you want to work in conjunction with your pets and not rely on them. Also resist altho thats less of an issue than it used to be.

Pet Balls are not quite what you think
they can be obtained via a Quest : http://uotreasurehunters.com/QA/queen.php?menu=2 and are very useful. There are some changes upcoming for these, mainly because of trying to balance the game with people using pets in pvp, but they will still be useful.

Discordance wasnt around in 1999. You are probably thinking of the Enticement skill, which Disco replaced. Provoke and peace were tho, and remember all the fuss about newbie players being able to get to Glorious Lord/Lady with their [young] tag still on etc because of the power of bard skills ? well its difficulty based now :p

If you're starting from scratch then the only reason a 6x 120 skill character isnt doable is because you won't yet have the veteran skills cap ( I forget how many points per year, someone else will no doubt know tho ! ) But you could have a 5x 120 and 1 skill at 100, real skill that is. But there is more flexibility than that. With the introduction of powerscrolls and skill/stat related jewellry and items its possible to have a skills cap of up to 120 in several skills and just use jewellry/items to push the skills up to that level whenever you need them to.

Veterinary is useful not just for the extra stable slots but now you can't have multiple dragons etc out when you hunt, and you go for quality not quantity with pets, its more important than it used to be to keep pets healed and alive. And altho not impossible to do that without magery its very hard. Also with high enough vet skill you can resurrect pets, if you don't have that then you will always have to rely on someone else to bring your pets back from the dead.

Ok I'll do that. That opens up a slot for vet but I still can't decide if I should pick up resist. After all it used to be one of the hardest skills to raise. My char will be PvM. I like PvP but I know, that I have no chance against even the mediocrest PvP players with their uber chars and experience.

OK, I'll definitely take vet for my tamer.
So I am thinking of mag/eval/med AT/AL/VET
But now I am torn. Should I pick up spellweaving or resists or something else then drop it, when I actually really should reach the 100+ tiers on the 6 main skills?
One more thinng, I saw your post on the Drach forum. Are you playing mainly there? I am from Germany, so Drach was my first choice but is it really so deserted? Should I rather start my main on europa? Or even an american shard?

Don't get fooled that Drachs is deserted.

Have a little look what shard was on top of the Zoo Donation List. for the last 3 weeks and going to be there for a few more.

If you doubt on your skill combination, just go TC and set your characters up the way you think you want them too look like and try them out and see what works best for you . We can give you tons of suggestions and advice but you and you are alone who can say what works best for your play style.

And take your time to learn/relearn things. Rushing things just sucks the fun out of it all.

P

Yea, you're right, of course.
But I don't like playing TC. I don't really know why, but I think it's the fact of seeing my characters beeing able to do things, they should not yet be able to do.

An yes, I'll take my time. I just have much less time than I used to, so it's going to take even more real time to accomplish anything.

And GRATZ for that amazig zoo project
I read Cat's story and your thread about it today.

Where is the located, so I can give it a visit?

Its the Moonglow Zoo. If you don't know where it is . You might run into several runes to the Zoo when Jessica drops them around the bank in Britain and Luna.

Here's what I have (not all at the same time tho), incorporating item bonuses:
Tame 120
Lore 120
Vet 110 (use yellow bandies for +10 = 120 Vet)
Music 120
Disco 120 (lowers all target's skills & resists by 28%. Hunt bigger, kill quicker!)
Peace 120
Resist 110
Magery 120
Eval 120
Med 120

That's my toolbox!

For taming: Tame/Lore/Vet/Music/Peace. Add Magery if taming a pet I can't ride (Gate). Add Resist if taming in a casting neighborhood. Add Disco if taming a pet that hits very hard (once Discoed he hits much less hard!). So Disco the target, Peace it so it don't attack and then tame in safety. Hardline Tamers scoff at using Peace but I don't think I would have been able to Tame a Rune Beetle without Peace.

For fighting: Tame/Lore/Vet/Music/Disco. Add Resist if fighting in a casting neighborhood. Add Peace if I need to control extra spawn.

Eval and Med are there because sometimes I like to play a Tamer/Mage.

My Rule of Pet Balls, every bonded pet MUST have an assigned Pet Ball.

All of this on a single character? This was not possible as I was playing. As I understand it, you must be using those soulstones to swap skills. Is it that easy? Can you, say, get eval int to 100 then store then get peace to 100 and swap the two as you like or are there restrictions?

Can you tell me more about pet balls. I can't find any information about what they're really good for.

What you described is practically a Mage/tamer and a /bard/tamer in one character. If it is really that easy, then that would be the way to go for me.

The pet balls - you click on one and assign it to a specific bonded pet ( bonding means you have had it for at least a week, feed it when you bring it out of the stables, and it will bond to you. This means that you ( or another player ) can resurrect it when it dies if you have enough Vet skill, and it means you can summon it to your side, whether in the stable or somewhere else, by means of clicking on the pet ball. The pet ball is kept charged by means of Yranslocation powder, obtainable by one of the Solen quests. If you read the link I put in above, it should show you both the quests for the pet balls and powder

No, it's not all at once.

It takes a dummy character to hold skills and a few soulstones (and the ability to wait 24 hours before being done), or just a LOT of soulstones.

To swap out a skill, it takes a stone with the new skill on it (from your own account, only) and an empty one not used in the last 24 hours (that is also tied to your account). You move off a skill to the empty one, then move the skill from the full one onto your character (then you can't use that now-empty stone for 24 hours).

P

Prudentis

Guest
So joblackjon in his example would need 8 soulstones?
Of 10 110-120 skills only 6 can be active at a time. the other 4 have to go into soulstones or the process would take 3 (not 4
)days if he only used 5 stones...
I suppose those are not really cheap or easy to get, are they?

Well but at least it can be done, that's a good thing.
This way you can try different builds on the same character, nice.

I almost fear, that there is a catch ... I mean other than training all those skills to 110 or 120, lol
And what about those powerscrolls and the +skill jewelry? Are those things obtainable?

+Skill jewelry can be found all over the place.

Magic jewelry no longer spawns with charged spells.

Now, they spawn with up to 5 properties, and few craftable types can be 6 properties. These can be
resists (up to 15% for each - each counts as a separate property)
night sight (while worn, not as a charge)
hit chance increase (1-15%)
defense chance increase (1-15%)
skills* (up to +15 in a skill)
faster casting 1
Faster cast recovery (1-3)
lower mana cost (for spells and special moves 1-8%)
Lower Reagent cost (1-20%)
Enhance potions (5-30% in steps of 5%)
stat bonuses (up to +8)

*skills are grouped into 4 or 5 different "pools" - so only one skill each pool can be on normal jewelry (event items can be different but those are pretty much non-existant). Only about half the skills can spawn on jewelry.

Sometimes you can get lucky and find jewelry with 2 or 3 complementary skills on them; for example, my Paladin/Treasure Hunter's template is made possible from having a ring and a bracelet, both of which have differing amounts of Chivalry, tactics and swordsmanship on them. Together, they total +20 Chivalry, +19 tactics, and +19 Swords.

Power scrolls are what allows skills to go over 100. They come from the Champion Spawns in Felucca. To get these, you'll have to work with several people (probably join a spawner guild) to do a spawn, and take the chance of being raided by PKs, or just buy them from the vendors the spawn guilds put up. The 120s are the maximum, but aren't needed for all skills, and certain skills can have scrolls that cost in the low 8 digits (magery, for example).

Typically if you make friends and ask around, you can get most 105s and 110s for free, or almost nothing. The Tailoring and Blacksmithy scrolls are rewards for crafting (see the entries on the main stratics page for Bulk Order Deeds), not the champ spawns.

P

Prudentis

Guest
Yes, I think it will be quite some time before I need 120 power scrolls, lol

Jewelry sounds like something wonderful. +15 would mean, that I could be a 110 mage with only going 95 in real skill

I found some free jewelry and scrolls in two public chests in front of a shop. In a sudden rush of cleptomania I collected all items that could come in handy

I have to remember to put those I don't need back in there, after all, maybe I'm not the only new player on the server ...

But I was surprised to see those 105 and even one 110 scrolls and some items and jewelry, which will make my life a lot easier, in public chests.

I have a question though.
If I had a natural magery skill of 50 and put on a +10 skill ring, will the skillgain be slowed down to the chance of 60 or is the chance to gain skill still this of the natural 50?

The jewelry may slow down your skill gain a little (it seems to vary a bit, by skill) - but this can be mostly offset by changing to casting what you would to train the augmented skill level. Anything you aren't 100% to do successfully at the level the jewelry puts you at, you can gain skill doing.

To use the example of the "combat training with a golem" that some do.

Golem training works for training weapon skills, anatomy, tactics, and lumberjacking (it can also be used to train magery, if you use a mage weapon). With the exception of Lumberjacking, the skill has to be in the 60s to have a chance to gain, gaining best in the 70s & 80s, then tapering off slowly (most people switch to fighting real things when over GM).

In order to get some skills to gain, when they are normally too low, people will wear jewelry to put them in the 60s or 70s for that skill, then remove the jewelry one piece at a time, as their real skill gets into that range.

The same thing can be done in real combat or casting conditions. Then, when you reach the natural skill level that goes with your jewelry to put you at your desired final level (say, for someone going for 110 magery, 95 real skill, with +15 from elsewhere), you just put the jewelry on and leave it on.

For training magery, it is also advantageous to try to put together a suit that is 100% Lower reagent cost, that can be meditated in. That way, one does not have the expense of buying thousands of reagents to cast spells. The actual abilities of the armor can be total crap, for non-combat training (casting spells over and over), as you typically won't be wearing the suit outside a safe area. Switch to a suit with more protection for actual combat.

(I can't believe I'm explaining stuff this way when I only golem trained one character, reluctantly, and did all my own magery training by gaining it in combat)

Thank you for helping this fellow out ... he's now in realms I haven't a clue on ... Resist is the ONLY skill I ever used jewelry on, never golem'd my skills and had only *some* clue as to good answers!

That's where I am with my magery atm. some 96+.
I found a +9 magery book. I think I will just go killing stuff as I used to to reach my GM.
I haven't decided if I sholud go higher tann GM. Are there negative consequences to reading power scrolls? If not I could just read a cheap 110 magery scroll.

Well, I am only MED GM because of the same fact, that I never really trained anything out of real combat situations other than my taming skills

My magery and eval int were raising as I healed my Dragons and flamestriked while my pets were fighting

I just don't have the patience to stand hours in a spot (or do the 8x8 hopping) only to raise as skill .1 points

The fun part about UO for me was always, that you could do very well without haveing maxed all skills.

But thanks for the tips anyway

Could you also tell me where I can go hunting to gather some mage armor?

There's no negatives for using scrolls - only positives.

For example, not only does a scroll expand your cap for that skill, it expands the range you can gain skill.

For example, most skills operate on a 2/1 or 5/2 ratio. That means your success chance increase 0.2% or 0.25% (depending on ratio) for every 0.1 skill you gain.

Most skills, when you hit 100% success chance for doing a particular usage, you can't gain on that usage anymore.

But if you use a power scroll, that top end for gaining expands to that percentage. For example, blacksmith and tailor use the 2/1 ratio. There might be an item that at 90 skill, a person becomes 100% chance to make. Without being scrolled, they can't gain on making it after 90. But, if they use a 105 scroll, they will be able to gain until the point where their skill would have been 105%, or 2.5 points higher. A 120 scroll would let them gain a full 10 points higher on the same item.

Spell casting acts similarly, for the most part, but the ratio may be different.

BTW, 8x8 doesn't matter anymore - they did away with it, and the anti-macro coding for things like training lockpicking.

Clothes, Regular leather & leaf armor (not studded, hide or bone) is automatically mage armor (without a tag as such), no matter what leather type it is made from. All other armors can have it as a magical property from spawning or when made as a runic.

Skill gain is dependant upon the the relationship between your "total" skill and your opponent's skill/resists. Total skill is real skill plus all skill increases.

At 50 total skill you need to be training with creatures that have 40-60 skill. At 60 total skill you need to be training with creatures that have 50-70 skill.

The most important rule in training is to train in your target area. The second most important rule is to train where there are abundant creatures in your target group...don't waste time searching for training partners. That's where jewelry comes into play. Use jewelry to shift your target gain area to large, non-agro groups.

jo, I think together our answers make the whole answer.

You described skills that require a target, while I described ones that do not (and, technically, most spells fall into the "do not", as they don't care who is targeted - if they even can be targeted - for the gain chance; just success or fail).

So a mage can wear leather or leave armor and even metal mage armor nowadays without losing mana regen? If I remember correctly, back in 2000 I had to limit myself to cloth or my regen would slow down to a crawl.

So now, what am I looking for? Plate mage armor with +resists since I didn't take spell resist and other bebeficial attributes?

Which monsters do I have to kill (soloable) to collect such things?

Another question: I know where to tame the old dragons ... The new ones with better stats, where are they and are they solo tamable?

I will be needing a nightmare and either a nice dragon or white wyrm. I'm old style so I'll pass on the doggy thingies

The new Greater Dragon resides in the same areas ... Daemon Temple, Destard ... you name it.

If something is mage armour it does not matter what it is made of, you will be able to regenerate mana in it. Depending on your needs, you will be able to find a variety of resists and abilities on them. Also, there is the possibility of monster loot leather armour being enhanced with a skilled tailor with either spined, horned or barbed leather ( spined gives extra luck, horned fire resists and barbed more general resists ) or if metal a smith can enhance with any of the coloured ores, I forget all the properties but can look it up, and I expect wooden stuff can be enhanced with the new woods but I have no clue about that ! There is also a good chance the item may be destroyed in the process so its risky.

If you want a mare on Drachs I can tame you one for starters. For drags and ww's you will probably need Frarc's help as I can only lead-tame , he has a good bard though which is helpful with the bigger tames.

He have now one Nightmare in the stable to bond that he tamed himself.

And he had a little taste of MJ's ability's! *tips hat*

If you ask nicely to Jessica , she can take you to places with pets (after they bonded) to get some nice armor and jewelry. Now that you have a house. You need chests and stuff to put in it!

For help with anything else he just need to ask.

I'll try to overwelm you with trying to answer where to i get nice armor/jewelry from.

First of all, everything can be bought for a price from players vendors but it always fun getting them yourself or with help of other people.

1) Make them yourself!
You will need some nice Runic crafting tools. You get those with doing BoD's for smithing and tailoring.

Bulk Order Deeds.

Fletching and Carpenter runics can be got with doing crafters quests in Heartwood.

Heartwood quests also give recipes that crafters can learn. Some of these recipes are very rare but gice Artifact like weapons and armor.
For these special ingredients are needed from Peerless Bosses. You need a little group of well armod people for that.

2) Minor Artifacts.

Fighting in Legacy Dungeons gives you points (can not be seen) the more you fight the more points, eventualy you will be rewarded with a Artifact. A full set of Virtue Armor can be realy nice if you collect all pieces.

Virtue Artifacts.

We have also minor artifacts from Paragons in Ilshenar. Golden monsters from Ilshenar have a chance to give you one. Just be know that these paragons are alot faster and have more hitpoints to kill.

There are Mondain Legacy Artifacts. Again you need to kill Paragon monsters in ML dungeons or the minibosses. (Swoop Miasma, Lurg)

Peerless Bosses also give special Artifacts.

And of course the Gauntlet in Doom give the Major Artifacts. You realy need a nice group and good skills and be prepared to go there.

All about Artifacts.

3) Treasure chests.
You will need a nice group got the level 5 and 6 chests. Even more now with the new dragons and Ancient Wyrm that can appear!

4) SoS bottles and nets.
A fisherman can pull up some nice chests. Nets are nice to do with groups and even more the special white nets!

5) Paragon chests! The higher the monster the better ofcourse. But let a experienced lockpicker and treasure open these. You might find one in the neighborhood!

6) Set armor from named minibosses in ML dungeons. The drop is very rare!

7) Events. If EA is running and event on your shard. Be sure to try to participate . Often these event give rare or a one time item artifact to drop if you help fighting the monsters.Even cursed artifacts can be trow at us. (A new one is coming soon, keep a eye on the Herald and on the boards for more info)

8) Community Collections. The Zoo in Moonglow, The Library in Britain and the Museum in Vesper. That is alot of work to get points of but its worth it if you have time to work on them.

Community Collections.

I'm sure there is alot more that i'm forgetting right now.Again everythign can be bough. But its nicer to get your character build up and try to hunt for them yourself or with others.

Thanks again, Frarc, for your wonderfull support yesterday and the superb info you just posted.
Having seen you in action, I am seriously thinking of training a bard

After you logged off, I went to Destard solo to see the new dragons.
I managed to lead tame a drake but the dragons! OMG!

I think I never died so many times in a row in UO before

They were deadly for me. I think I MIGHT have been able to lead tame one with enough space ... but what space?
Are they really that much better then they were before or do I just suck now ?

I can remember, that I was able to walk destard solo and kill dragons left and right with Avalac'h. I was also able to leadtame a dragon a while in Wind without dying. But didn't succeed because of my taming being too low. I only aggrevated it all the time. I even almost solo killed the ancient wyrm (OK, I left the room a few times to heal
) only to lose the killing blow to a stealthed griefer

Anyways, That is the fun stuff for me in UO. I like doing things, that are normally considered almost impossible. I'd like to know, what I need to survive the new dragons on my mage. Is it the Armor and the resists? Will I be much better, when my skills hit the 110-115 caps and I have a full suit of plate mage armor with good resists on me?

There is a little room in the most SE corner of Destard. Bring your greater dragon in there you want to tame.

My friend who have 120 in every taming skill also angered the greater dragon alot. She did tame them in 2 times when she did not angre it. (With MJ's help). High skills will help in faster taming one.

For the greater dragons its best you need a armor with high fire/physical and energy resist. (All 70 is best) It don't need to be plate, any armor will do, just need alot of resist.

And about MJ, He is a Bard like no other! Things can look easy with the man with the black hat.

MJ's skills

Aiming for all 120 when i can afford it.

Gosh, MJ is a killer!

And as for the dragons ... I see, I will be needing some new equipment before I go on taming them.
I guess I'll just wait out the week 'till my mere is bonded and build up my skills until then. After that I will require your helb in getting some armor

EDIT: Frarc, you are using KR ... can you please check if you know an answer to this problem?:
