I've been trading with many of those reliable traders listed above. Use those list first.

Most common ways to be scammed is standing at the inns or banks spamming wanting trade this shard for your shard. People could easily say I have shard whatever you have and gimme statue. Don't do it!!

Ask for ICQ, if none. Do theirs first one at a time. till all completed.

With ICQ, not necessarily safe, still do one at a time. And use your guts on how you feel about that person. Don't fall in that trap, when people ask to do their shards all 5 chars first. I've done 300 trades, only lost 1 statue so far. Compared to last year my rookie experience. I lost maybe 10 out of 40 trades. I still see those people yelling (name of player) scammed me!!! I feel bad, but if they knew the safest way, it probably won't happen.

• Remember the 30 day rule. OSI requires that all characters must be over 30 days old to receive the holiday gifts. Bear this in mind. If this is news to you when you read this, you'd better hurry and create your characters on other shards... if its past Nov 20th, don't bother. The reason I am bringing this up is that you can bet that there will be PLENTY of folks who didn't take the proper preparations, and will be attempting to scam.
• Deal with familiar folks as much as possible. The best chance you have is to contact old friends on other shards. Failing that, use this message board -- people who have more than a (Visitor) title are much less likely to disappear. Someone with an established Stratics title is probably well known and less likely to be a scammer (tho it can happen). Picking some anonymous yahoo at the Britian Inn is very risky.
• Do Multi-Step Trades with High Risk Traders. If I am broadcasting that I need Sonoma, and I'm on Napa, and I make a deal with someone I don't know, I will demand that I get the first prize, since I'm the one who initiated the deal and am sticking my neck out. (Bettor's choice: I set the shards, so I should go first) When he gives it, we will go to Napa, and I will give him one. Then back to Sonoma, and 2 for 2. Then 2 for 2 again. This is time consuming but it is much safer... if he's going to scam you, you're probably only out one prize, instead of all five.
• Never do 5 for 5 with a stranger unless he is foolish enough to go first. And if he does, by all means, give him the presents he earned. Don't scam him. But never, EVER give anyone all 5 first unless you know them personally. That's asking to be scammed.
• When you are scammed, move on. If you are going to do multi-shard trading on several shards, chances are rather good you will be scammed at least once. Do not waste time yelling him out and letting him trap you into a harassment call. If you are doing multi-shard trading, you have a LOT of work to do, so don't waste time on the lowlifes. Shrug it off and move on.
• Check the reliable traders list. Reliable traders are much less likely to scam you -- but never forget that it IS a possibility. Everyone you trade with is a risk... but some people are less risky than others..
• Don't bother with obvious throwaway characters or mules as acceptors. If you are on a shard, let's say Great Lakes, and some guy named TradeDude wearing the newbie clothes comes up, and wants to trade for this shard, be wary. Such a character is far too easy to delete once you've scammed someone, making the evidence of the scam vaporize. Deal with MAINS -- people on steeds, in armor, with titles. Dealing with mules and throwaways as the representatives from the current shard is asking for trouble.
• Don't accept "later" promises. Cut your losses when you are in a scam. If you suspect you are being scammed, ask for the items back. If they refuse, or give an excuse, see #5. If they say they cant log onto your shard to give you your matching prizes, well, hopefully you've followed #3 and only lost one prize. A scammer will try to keep you on the hook as long as possible, and bleed you for as much as possible -- bet on it. If he is skirting your terms to get more prizes, his reaction to a requested refund should show you his true colors.
• Don't page for a scam. Don't bother. Please, trust me. I am sure the GMs aren't pleased with multi-shard gifts as it is, and they won't interfere if someone was scammed out of his castle -- so what are the odds he will look into YOUR problem?
• Fishing for a trader is risky. Remember that it is a LOT more common for the scammer to volunteer for an offered shard trade than to propose it. Whoever is saying "Trading for Sonoma!" is the one putting his neck out.

Even when I screw up on the count they still traded with me 12 for 12. Anyone else new to the game of trading would have yelled scammer or worse.
