just finishing up a book and looking for a new one.

fantasy
i really like sword of shannara book 1-2 (but fades out after that)
books of truth, eye of world series, dragon riders of pern, game of thrones, most older series i already read.
looking for something realitivly new

or sci fi
fav = lensman, hyperion, foundation
read most older series but looking for a newer series

or horror
read most stephan king, koontz, (swan song), straub

thinking about steve erikenson series
i am not looking for any vampire stuff. I like how king writes with many threads of story coming together (and foundation). I also like sci fi that they build technology as the book goes along.

You're right. Possibly this summer. Currently already reading ~500 pages/week for class, in addition to working full-time, so casual reading has fallen by the wayside. >.<

its extremely old fashion writing

there is a new movie coming out soon i hear probably because of the changes in USA economics last 4 years of pelocy's congress.

dont get me wrong - its a good read and true to how people will react to the government.

I disagree that the writing is old fashioned. The film is finally being released on April 15, very limited. Fortunately it looks like it will be fairly true to the book and doesn't have a ton of big named stars who supposedly are fans of Rand.

Other than the ones listed above...

Fantasy: "The Belgariad" and "The Mallorean" series (2 series of 5 books each) by David and Leah Eddings

Sci-Fi: "The Gap" series by Stephen R Donaldson (It's rather borderline x rated, and degrading... but good stuff.)

While they may not be as classy as most of the ones listed here, I have very much enjoyed many of the later Star Trek novels. Particularly the ones that carry the story on from the end of the Deep Space Nine TV series, and the "Starfleet Corp of Engineers" series.
Also in Star Trek, the Gateways series and Captain's Table.

Also, the Terminator 2: Infiltrator series (Infiltrator, Rising Storm and Future War), which was written before the third film, and did (in my opinion) a much better job of continuing the story than the films did.

Jurassic Park and The Lost World were good read.
Prey, also by Michael Crichton was good, too.

I am surprised no one has mentioned any Tolkien.

Hmm...

I like Piers Anthony's Xanth Series though I haven't read much of his other work, but be warned if you can't stand often cheesy puns you'll be overloaded with them in this series.

I've kept up to date with Robert Jordan's Wheel of time and I'd recommend it highly, though I will admit it gets dry in sections there's a lot going on in those books. Since his death and the series being worked on heading for completion by Brandon Sanderson (who was chosen by Jordan's Widow), the writing style has changed a good bit, but the story is still gold.

Katherine Kerr, her books if you haven't read the Deverry Cycle can get quite confusing the story isn't exactly told chronologically, events in them happen over the course of several centuries, and as a present day event happens they'll often have a "Flashback" chapter to an event a hundred years earlier or more that set what just happened in motion. They are still excellent reading just the way it's laid out isn't always for everyone.

If any of us here have never picked up a book by Wies and Hickman, there's a problem. I'm not even going to start to explain the genius of their writing, but I will recommend the following books if you haven't read them.

The Soulforge, which delves into the young life of Rastlin and Caramon Majere starting at age 6 and concludes with his Test in the tower of High Sorcery.

Brothers in Arms, which picks up after Rastlin's testing, and follows his journey and first adventures as a War Wizard.

I'd also recommend The Prism Pentad by Troy Denning. If you played Dark Sun in the past, these will be familiar territory to you.
