but keep in mind .png will make for nicer looker images as far as Ultima art is concerned! .jpg will afford smaller file sizes, though.

Or you could just use the Snipping Tool which comes with W7 in Accessories which removes the cropping/pasting into Paint entirely.

It always makes me chuckle when I see people take photos of their computer screen then post them up. Nice guide Petra. Very much needed I think.

When I first started to mess around with dual monitors, I didn't realize I had it set to dual sometimes until I hit print screen and had...another screen in the capture ;D (I had my second monitor on a switch, so sometimes it was displaying my second computer, sometimes my first).

Well nice thread on how to post a pic but this way has NEVER worked for me. The printscreen button does nothing for me. I have followed these steps exactly and in different ways with print screen button. Just doesn't work for me. Nothing is ever there to paste or copy over to paint. I know this way works for many so this thread is spot on for most but for me....nope. Maybe my button broken but it is a newer keyboard and my last one it never worked either. Hence I try to never post pics and Im not going to download extra programs just so my pics will looks nice. So if you ever see a pic from me it will be a photo, might not look nice but I bet you I will never hear "your pic is too small to make out the items or wording" So when and if you do see a pic from me, u may chuckle if u like at the "photo" cause it doesnt hurt me any but that photo is way easier for me to do then all this print screen, cropin, etc etc as I've tried and doesn't work for me.

I've always used imageshack. Petra, what version of paint is that? From the layout, I'd say 2007? I think I have 2003 (though I'm not sure where to check the year, nor do I use ti often enough to care), which, afaik, doesn't have a crop option.

I have windows 7 on my pc. In an older version use the 'select' to draw a box around the relevant part then 'cut' and 'paste' into a new image. You can grab the bottom corner of the white area and shrink it down to the actual image.

I use GIMP for more sophisticated manipulation, but my favorite for quick cropping is IrfanView. Open it, paste the screenshot, select the area, Ctrl-Y to crop, save.

:) personally I use paint.net, but this guide is meant for people who don't have, or want, specialist image editing software and simply want an answer to 'how do I post a picture on the boards?'

*scroll down to the bottom*

This is a program I use, it is free known as Gadwin Printscreen and all I have to do is hit print screen on my keyboard to automatically have a JPEG picture saved into a file of my choosing without having to use paint to copy and paste.. Also, I set the source to "Rectangular Area" which means ever time I take a screenshot I get to highlight the area of the game that I want to save only, so that it is already cropped and so all I gotta do is use print and my left mouse button and I get a already cropped and saved photo into a file.. I do a lot of roleplaying and this comes in handy for "writing reports" which I like to do a lot of and then I use paint to put them together.. They turn out like this..

This is where this program comes in handy.. ;)

There are a lot of good freeware stitchers out there, but not having tried any, have you found any that keep UO's pixel-by-pixel accuracy? For UO, I post multiple screenshots into Paint, since it's easy to choose a rectangular area and slide it around. This one took six screenshots, as I recall, three across and two down. Ordinarily 800x1100 would need only two screenshots, but more were needed to overlap each other and not have my character appear.

I used to have a few screenshot grabbing utilities when I used Windows, you basically set up which section of the screen to grab and assign a shortcut key for the "camera" I used them just to get screenies during events, but you could use them if your print screen key is broken.

Can I have the latest on this please? Are we supposed to be able to simply copy and paste a jpg from the PC or do we need to use a link like photo bucket or image shack? I've tried both and not gotten either method to work for me (I just see some little icon that says IMG or something, then I deleted the attempt. Using Windows 8, not doing something right, I suppose)

No, you don't need photo bucket or image shack. If you follow the guide above carefully you'll see that it tells you how to upload the image from your pc to the forum.

I see. For the record, my problem was going with what seemed natural from the layout of the screen. There is an icon at the top that looks like a photo that says "insert/edit image." Now, wouldn't you think that's what you would use to to insert an image? Apparently not, since it never worked for me. Taking Petra's advice, I re-read her post and used "upload a file" instead (a photo is not an "image" but a "file"?) - and that worked. BTW, the test photo is Taylor on the left and Robert Downey Jr. on the right.
