Origin PvP Tournament – April 25, 2009
Lessons Learned

As stated previously, we are strongly soliciting player feedback on ways to improve the next PvP event. We do not want to “give up” on Felucca based events and we sincerely hope you don’t either. With that in mind, I’ve put together some things that worked, things that didn’t and what we are hoping to do to improve. Please send in feedback to us here and let us know any suggestions you have. All constructive feedback is welcomed and read.

We are working for YOU and would like to hear from YOU on ways to make things even better. Hopefully the following will get some dialogue started on how to accomplish this.

Things that worked well:
1. Rules were clear cut, agreed to and abided by with no complaints. Discussion and feedback is solicited from players on any amendments to the rules for future tournaments.
2. Brackets allowed participation from various templates and the Pure Mage bracket was the most popular.
3. Contestant’s packs were checked prior to each match without complaint and they willingly gave over extra items to the EM’s to be held for them. Player cooperation in this area was very polite and helpful. Player honor truly came to the forefront in this.
4. The house design was sound for the dueling pit and observation area. Pit was set up to minimize outside interference. While outside interference can never be controlled completely, every effort was made to minimize this. The ring was big enough for players to have room to move but small enough to prevent massive running. The only way in or out of the area was via EM transfer. The size seemed adequate for the matchups. The observation area provided a clear view of the fights below as well as allowing for all power words in mage duels to be heard clearly. This was a big concern of the players prior to the event.
5. Matchups for the first round were determined by dice roll. The person rolling the highest matched with the person rolling the lowest and so on for the initial matches. If two people tied, they matched with each other. There were no complaints with this method.
6. Battle Royale was no holds barred. Only rule was no invising/hiding/leaving house.
7. Trophies were engraved and displayed at the PvP Arena and Awards House. The “trophies” were created to reflect each category and engraved with the winner’s name and category they won in. The trophies were hued a golden color as well.
8. Lanterns and Runes announcing the event were placed at Yew Gate Felucca, Serpents Hold Docks Felucca, Brit Bank Trammel, Brit Bank Felucca, Luna Bank and the Counselor’s Hall in Britain.

Things that need to be improved or were problems:
1. Biggest problem was encountered when one player rez killed a contestant. The guild mates of the killed player decided to avenge the death. The guild mates of the initial offender then jumped into the fray and chaos resulted. The EM’s were unable to quickly sort out the proper people to ban with the amount of fighting and chasing going on as EM’s are still learning characters “on sight”. Once the people were banned, there was then another issue (See #2) that compounded the problem.
2. The biggest mistake of the evening was made by EM Faine Morgan. In attempting to resolve the chaos from issue #1, EM Faine friended people to the house in order to set the house private. This resulted in people inside kicking other people who were not involved in the current chaos but increased the problem exponentially. This led to the ban list having to be cleared thereby allowing the people that were causing problems initially re-entry into the house and more problems resulting in a longer period of chaos. EM Faine should have Accessed the people instead of friending them and this might have controlled the situation sooner. This was a mistake on the part of EM Faine Morgan and full responsibility is accepted.
3. Several players indicated they had not known where or how to sign up for the event. While it was posted on Stratics and on the Origin Event Website, many players do not follow either.
4. Several players indicated a strong interest in being allowed to register for multiple brackets. For example, Hybrid Mage and Pure Mage.
5. Communication Crystals made it hard to see the players who needed to be actioned once everyone started talking.

Steps being taken to resolve the issues:
1. The first floor stairs leading up to the fighting and observation areas have been changed to a teleporter. The teleporter leads directly to the observation area. Upon arrival, players may proceed upstairs for the event. Once the event starts, access to the teleporter will be restricted. This means that players must arrive on time and, once the event starts, they must stay inside or outside. Anyone leaving prematurely will not be transferred back in. While this cuts down on freedom of movement, this should allow the EM’s more control in keeping the tournaments running smoothly. It also allows the house to stay public and resolves the issue with friending or accessing.
2. Healers and Stable Master NPC’s have been moved inside the house. Two healers have been placed on the second floor next to the fighting pit. Two additional healers remain outside for those needing a rez prior to entering the house.
3. Multiple bracket registrations will be allowed at the next tournament.
4. Since the second and third floors seem to lend themselves well to being heard, it will be tested without the use of communication crystals for the next event. If communication becomes an issue, this will be revisited.
5. The next registration period needs to be clearly publicized in game. Lanterns will be clearly marked each day with the date and time of the registration and place to meet to register. These lanterns will need to be replaced for each registration day.
6. Feedback is being strongly solicited from the Players via the Origin Event Website for other ways to improve the next Felucca based event.
7. If anyone interferes with another Felucca event held at the Arena, the event will be immediately stopped until the offender is dealt with. Should said offender and any others choose to leave the arena, even to try to “avenge” the situation, they will not be readmitted upstairs and will forfeit any place in the event.

I believe the players have spoken that if there is no prize worth fighting for, then it's just not worth having the event.

Origin PvP House/Arena version 1.1

This evening EM Faine Morgan gave me a tour of the house and the changes that have been made. Both outside healers were moved closer to the house.

The stable master was moved inside, and can be moved upstairs for pet duel events.

The stairs from the main floor to the second floor were replaced by a teleporter that requires an EM to move you to it so you may gain access to the third floor spectator area.

There is a quick exit teleporter in the northwest corner of that area. This teleporter takes you outside to the vortex to Britain (Felucca). Word of caution on the quick exit teleporter … once an event has begun, if you leave the house, you can access the first floor only. You will not be able to gain access to the spectator area.

Stairs connect the second and third floor. When competitors are called, they will use the stairs to go to the arena (second) floor where they will be transported into the arena for their bout. The EMs have placed red and blue healers outside the arena so the fallen may get rezzed, collect their belongings, and then be transported out of the arena.

The arena was tested for ‘sound’, and it was found that speech and magery power words can be seen without the use of communication crystals, hence the use of the crystals during duels will be discontinued.

Origin is the first shard to have their PVP house completed and an event held. As EM Faine Morgan said, ‘That’s what Origin is all about ... being first.’ With that being said, if you see something you feel might be a problem, let EM Faine Morgan and EM Laurana know about it via the feedback form on their website UO - Origin Events . While you’re there, drop them a note thanking them for all their efforts and hard work in planning such diversified events for the shard.
