Ok, bad joke. There is no alternative to picking them up from the ground.
However, getting one to spawn is the issue.
So here's what works for me: Get out a character that can summon horde demon (the necro spell summon familiar). If you don't have a necro character you can probably put on enough jewellery and stuff to get your skill there. Find yourself a pumpkin field and summon your little blue friend. He will now pick up all the useless pumpkins within range until he is full - which is around 400 stones. Release him - and summon a new one. Keep clearing the field and look out for the respawn.
I have not seen the demons picking up the large jack-o-lanterns, but better safe than sorry and check their packpack before releasing them.
