Welcome to Stratics and to the game 
What exactly do you mean by upgrade? Adding the expansions (which doesn't take long at all) or updating the game? There is only one way to perform the latter, and that's by connecting Play Online to the server and download it when you are prompted to. There is no quick about updating.

Upgrading as you put it or downloading the patch will be dependent upon luck, your connection and most likely internet traffic. Always best to just wait until after a patch occurs unless you have a good to a very good connection.
