How do I restrict access to my teleporters?

G

Guest
I've got a public house so that I can have a vendor, but I want to have my access points be restricted. I read that I can restrict my doors and teleporters, but I cannot find the mechanism with which to do that.

In fact, and humorously, a troll teleported into my house about five minutes ago! Needless to say I was amused but not anxious to make that a habit. Oh, and I live in Fel. *grins*

So, folks, tell me how I make my teleporters and other access ways secure from the riff raff.

Thanks.

Basically, I think you shift-single click, or however you're configured to bring up context menu, on the desired portal, (i.e. door, teleporter, or even container) and this should allow you to set access.

Thanks. Before, for some reason I couldn't bring up a context menu, but this time I was able to. I appreciate the help. I am soooo happy to be able to put vendors up and not have people traipse through my house. Heck, folks don't even get in my yard: whole place is fenced, with room for a teleporter made just outside the fence. yay!

Feel free to post a pic of your UO home (at least on the Sonoma boards !) /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

Hey, how are you tonight, Citizen? I will put up a pic, but only the first "floor" is laid down: I bought a 12x15 dirt lot with all my 102,000 newbie gold, and designed a 400,000 gold four story farm house--but could only afford to build the first floor at this time. Heheh. So I built the first floor, after taking screenshots of the rest of my design and dismantling it. Probably be a few weeks before I can build the remaining storys. Then theres the decorating...

Ya know, after spending more than twenty hours designing the whole place it only took five beers and ten minutes to dismantle it down to the first floor. I couldn't have beared to do it sober.

I'm doing fine /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif (It's afternoon in Singapore at this time - just after lunch/php-bin/shared/images/icons/tongue.gif). I'm glad to see that you're making great progress - in Fel, no less.

Just curious - do Fel vendors do well in Sonoma ? Personally speaking, I never do my shopping in Fel (NPC vendors don't count /php-bin/shared/images/icons/tongue.gif) - I'm too paranoid about some lurking stealth poisoning fencer waiting around the corner after I purchased any item.

P/S You took 20 hours to design your UO home ?! That's dedication. I took like, oh, 35 minutes to design my UO home /php-bin/shared/images/icons/biggrin.gif (I was in a hurry to put up some walls and chests, so I just shamelessly copied a design from another player). But in retrospect, I think it may have been more fun to have taken more time with it and just experiment with ... say ... more teleporters ! /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

Singapore, that's right. How exotic! Yeah, I took a lot of time designing the place, trying to make it look real and also structurally realistic. Heck, anything for entertainment.

I have no idea if Fel vendors do Boo in Sonoma. Mine is filled with newbie junk. I'm just excited to have a vendor. heheheh. I mean, you should just laugh at me and think, "Whatever." I forget I'm on Fel (well, not at the gut level, where I stay a tad more alert) because I have desolation turned off and because it's frankly quiet as the countryside should be.

Now that you made me think of it though, i imagine that once I get to the skill level where I can put some interesting stuff out for sale I'll have to find a mall in Trammel.

What do your characters do, Citizen? What's your main do for entertainment? How and where do you run your vendors?

Well, with vendor rental contracts, it shouldn't be too difficult to come to an arrangement with a popular Trammel mall.

I never had any vendors and with publish 20 (reported bugs, some uncertainty about vendor charges etcs), I feel even less inclinded to start one. /php-bin/shared/images/icons/frown.gif

I basically have :

(a) a provocation tamer (struggling to make elder for the past few months - taming is so incredibly boring /php-bin/shared/images/icons/tongue.gif. I frequently give up after 15 mins of talking aka DrDoLittle to the animals. I have respect for players who managed to reach legendary skill levels in taming. Personally, I can promise to take good care of only so many bulls and unicorns before I go nuts /php-bin/shared/images/icons/sick.gif),

(b)a craftsman (named "Solace") - he basically just collects BODs (it's not hard nor time consuming) and grows plants (I find plants being sold on Formosa too expensive, so I grow my own and use whatever the UO powers throw in my direction for decoration in my UO home. Needless to say, it's a bit haphazard /php-bin/shared/images/icons/spin.gif)

(c) an inactive nox fencer (still waiting to be re-tooled)

(d)a necro mage. Currently my favourite character - it's all that shiny new necro spells. /php-bin/shared/images/icons/biggrin.gif I have been bringing him around just to test things out the past few weeks - Doom Gauntlet (my grouse with looting scripts is reserved for another thread), Fel Champ spawns (this one gets him frequently killed /php-bin/shared/images/icons/dunce.gif) - sometimes just wondering around checking out how many flamestrikes it takes to down a troll (two) and looking for bargains in player vendors.

In a way, I'm trying to wind down my UO activities a bit; so I don't have any long term UO plans at this time. I have to go for reservist soon for 2 weeks (aka yearly compulsary national service in the military - I hope this paints the right picture ? It's an annual thing and compulsory for every able bodied male citizen. In my particular vocation, I get to wallow in mud constructing defence positions and such. Oh joy. /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif)

Heck I just investigated my webspace for this account (and loaded my Dreamweaver software). Let's see if I can generate a picture or two, and a couple of links. What I'll try to show here is the built first floor of my farm house, and to keep from making this a slow loading thread I'll leave links to pics of the other two storeys and the roof. The picture of the roof is a little misleading, since it shows older versions of the lower storeys.

okay, Ground floor coming up. You'll see, if this picture works, the golden stone area where my forge and smithy will be. The remainder of the ground floor will be decorated with barrels and tools and water trough, and the other stuff that makes a barn workshop look like a barn workshop.

the other floors:

Let's see if it all works. Been a long time since I done this stuff.

ahhh. Say, are you British by nature, or does everyone outside of the US spell it "defence"? /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

I'll tell ya, I'm not having fun with barding this time around. Makes me feel like a traitor to say that. My char (since I'm just working with one guy, really) is a NecroMageBard. Wondering if I should drop the Barding...(now that it's all in the 70's and 80's *shakes head*). Tell me, please, will I be happy and powerful as a NecroMage with Hiding? Will I be able to handle myself anywhere and make some good loot to boot? Mind you, I'd be happy to die as much as my bard always did, so that's not asking much...

Wait a minute: are you northern European? Swedish? Heheh. I think they have the compulsory service like you're describing...So, do you do the two weeks and then come back to UO? How long you been doin that, eh? What else do you do with yer spare time?

Real nice ! /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif/php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif The illusion of a fireplace on the third floor is a nice touch. But to be pendatic and showing my utter bias, I have a query - no water features ? /php-bin/shared/images/icons/tongue.gif (Although I do concede that water features probably don't sit too well with your barn workshop theme. And with such a theme, I take it that you will just have to build a tamer in due course /php-bin/shared/images/icons/biggrin.gif).

P/S One other comment - I haven't had much experience with teleporters, but you may want to make sure that your packy (if you use one in addition to a bettle) can teleport easily through the "entrance" teleporter to reach your smithy area.

Thanks for the tip on the packy. I'll check that out.

You know, my place is not flashy or exotic. I'm passing on the waterfall tricks, and odd arrangements of weird materials. It's not going to max out the cubic space, and I won't pack every damned thing in the world into it. It's just meant to be a big old farmplace, and look comfy and realistic when it's done.

The fireplace you see is actually the base for the fireplace: I expect to fill out its features and its fire a bit (you know, the benches/shadow ore/comm crystal/etc stuff). That's the third floor, and is the bedroom suite; the bed will be near the northwest corner.

The second floor will be cooking and dining:eek:ven will snuggle up to the eastern edge of the stairwell. Food prep area all in that south space, and a longish dining table along that western stretch of big windows. There will be a few chairs on the veranda.

In general, there will be lamps sticking out of exterior walls (the old warhammer/lantern trick, which can look quite realistic) there will be carpet and trophyheads and pictures hanging; I expect I'll put some bushy plants down on the first level; it should all look simple, but hopefully it will all look realistic. I really like decorating that way.

I've seen some amazing houses in UO, some real tricky mazes of places with full on shrines and..well, heck, you've seen them too. It's impressive. I'm just more in the mood, with my place, for it to give me the sense of...Sosaria, I guess. It helps me feel like I'm there, not to sound too wacky.

Hmmm... lemme see if I can dig up a picture of my old villa. That gives a fair image of what tone I like to present. I miss that place:

I don't know whether you'll be happy without at least one character with bardic skills ! /php-bin/shared/images/icons/tongue.gif

As for "power" - well, it's really a question of playstyle and preference. I have found hiding on my necro mage incredibly useful for both the Doom gauntlet (sigh - bards will find it hard there, since all the Doom bosses are immue to bardic skills) and Fel champ spawns (ie mana dump, monster target you, run out a bit and hide. And when you hide, so does your necro summon /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif).

And I do understand (I think) some of the frustration you might be feeling. My tamer had about 95 provocation pre Publish 16. When I returned to AOS, it was a bit sad to see that even at 99.5 provocation (I haven't got the heart to macro it - and yes, it can be macroed /php-bin/shared/images/icons/frown.gif) and GM musicmanship, my tamer cannot reliably provoke 2 dragons.

Sadly, balrons and such are really the province for legendary bards (skill-wise, I mean /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif). The power of pre-Pub 16 bards is ... well, not lost, but much harder to obtain since it depends on factors apart from practising the skill (aka powerscrolls).

P/S I'm not sure how else one could spell "defence" (*scratches head*).

I'm Chinese (same as the majority in Singapore. We are a fairly multi-racial bunch on this tiny island - Malays, Indians and Eurasians also make up a sizeable part of our population).

We have complusory national service (full time for about 2 years) and thereafter annual reservist. The reservist "thing" (I'm not even sure what's the proper term for it - and I'm so tempted to use the term "liability" /php-bin/shared/images/icons/tongue.gif) lasts until one reaches 35 or 40 years (depending on military rank). (I'm closer then you think).

As for spare time (outside UO), it's basically spent jogging or going to the gym - oh, and spending quality time with my darling wife (in case she reads this /php-bin/shared/images/icons/tongue.gif).

Yes, I have also seen some of the UO Homes where the owner/s try to cramp "every damned thing in the world into it" /php-bin/shared/images/icons/tongue.gif Sometimes it works, and sometimes it just turns out rather messy. As you have already pointed out, the point is to build a UO home you can feel comfortable in (and store your stuff). [As an aside, I have seen some houses which stand in the middle of swamps with lots of snakes and assorted crawlies spawning - I'm just curious whether anyone can feel comfortable in that ?!]

I'm very partial to water features because ... well, it was my first time customizing my UO home and the ability to put in as many water tiles as one wished was just too seductive.

G

Greatfellow

Guest
*laughs about the water tiles* heck, put up a pic of yer place. By the way, I'm probably ten years older than you, maybe more.

Ya know, I'm not going to keep barding. I'll use it to pay for my house, then it's gone. I was pre Pub 16, too, you know, and a GM BardMage. The Balrons knew me by name. How can I enjoy the trade, now, if your 99.5 Bard can't reliably it two dragons? The whole beauty of Barding was wading into twenty critters and turning them into your dance partners. All of them. I could do that, and it was fun. Funnest stuff I did in UO.

Now I've heard, not just from you, that it's just not the same game. Call me spoiled, cause I am, but I wanna be a force to be reckoned with. I don't want to babysit two critters who are slowly banging each other to death while other folks are wasting them right and left around me. I don't want to start a fight and have to watch it dissipate because I had to leave the line of sight to evade some other monster. I don't want to spend four skill slots to gain dominion over some creatures in a limited environment at a slower kill rate than other folks manage while being incapable of using the four skills on certain creatures at all. To hell with it.

*sighs* It really has been a frustration. I mean, I can survive a spawn even now, at my limited skill level. But I can't own it, and I lose the effect of half my provocations due to performing site-and-range-breaking maneuvers; I can survive it, but I can't break it to my will. Pfft. I'll find something else.

I'll necro mage, and hide. Tell me, should I try to poison? Should I do a sword skill? What should I do for defensive skill, by the way? I get hit hard as heck by every critter that touches me. I hate wearing armor and don't want ot lose a lot of skill points to evasive skills. What do you suggest?

Oh, and in the States we spell it "defense".

P.S. It's 2:30 am here in the capital of California. Arnold Schwarznegger is my new governor. I work five hundred yards from the State Capitol. I look at it out my 12th storey window. Interesting place to be. I might have to sleep soon, although I'm really enjoying the chat with you.

To be a force to be reckoned with in PvM, really these days the options are to build :

(a) a Tamer (preferably with the peacemaking skill);
(b) a Paladin (even more awesome with the peacemaking skill); and
(c) a mage (also damn effective with peacemaking skill)

I think you will start to see a trend here. /php-bin/shared/images/icons/biggrin.gif A necro mage, frankly speaking, is a very specialised kind of PvMer. I built mine up to deal with very specific monsters my tamer cannot handle effectively or at all [such as Betrayers, Meer Eternals, Doom bosses at the Gauntlet, golems, juka lords, solen queens etc] as well as for a little adventuring in Fel. The necro mage will not be able to waste monsters the same way a paladin/tamer/mage peacer can. /php-bin/shared/images/icons/frown.gif

But if you're still keen to go adventuring with a necro mage, here are some more views :

(1) You may want to consider taking up anatomy. With evaluate intelligence and anatomy, you get a defensive dodge factor (ie when unarmed). The formula is (probably) [(Anatomy + Evaluate Intelligence +20)/2] capped at 120.

I hope I'm making sense. But essentially with evaluate intelligence skill of 110 and (say) Anatomy of 100, you get the equivalent of a dodge skill equivalent to 115 wrestling.

Some reasons why (newer) mages pick anatomy over wrestling is because (a) it's much easier to train anatomy (aka "hot spot") than wrestling nowadays (b) you invest less skill in anatomy to get a higher dodge factor. One noticeable drawback of the anatomy + evaluate intelligence formula (compared to wrestling) is the inablity to stun punch etc.

You can boost your dodge factor even more (whether with wrestling or anatomy + evaluate intelligence) by carrying a spell chanelling shield (with no faster casting -1 penalty) with a defensive chance increase (anything above 8% is fairly decent) - also enhanced with valorite to get some additional resists. /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif At least on my shard, such shields are fairly common and sell for about 5k to 10k.

(2) I think most players can go with a weapon or mage skills on a necromancer and not both. It's probably spreading yourself too thin to take up both. Also, a necro warrior is (in my opinion) even worse at PvM than a necro mage.

(3) Poison on a necro mage .... one drawback of poison is that it is presently incredibly easy to cure - by both players and monsters.

With a necro mage, you can cast deadly poison fields and combine the evil omen spell with the poison spell - but that's about it. Most monsters are highly resistant or outright immune to poison (orc brutes) - and even when your poison breaks through, magic using monsters tend to cure it at a alarming rate.

For a warrior, the poisoning skill is not crucial - but having the poison skill will allow you to inflcit lethal poison (sounds cool, but again, easily cured by magic using monsters) with a reduction in mana cost. For PvM, I personally feel that the poisoning skill has very limited options.

P/S I so agree with you about a pre Pub 16 player coming back to AOS - there was certainly some frustration. But then again, AOS brought ... water tiles ! /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif/php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

What a wonderful place, Greatfellow...I am sure that Fred is pleased as can be. It's perfect. :)

I've a suggestion for your fireplace. Snag me the next time you see me, and I will show you my guildmate's rendition. (it's near the Y) He has managed to evoke the glowing, flickering embers without use of a forge or the stark, hard light of comm crystals. Well, that's not entirely true...comm crystals are employed, but buried, and in tandem with other elements.

What ore have you used there? Dull copper? It looks great. Oh, and if you need any plants, just let me know. They're on the house. /php-bin/shared/images/icons/smile.gif

Hiya, Dor! I wonder if yer viewing the old place or the new one. The old one is the last two pictures, and the fireplace in it is dull copper ore, I think, just like you mentioned. Dull copper ore around a forge.

However, in the new place (of which only the first floor is built, due to funding issues :]) the fireplace resides on floor three, and so far it's made just from tiles available in the house building screens.

I'd love to see your guildmate's fireplace. Also, I'll be darned happy to snag a few plants, once I have a place to set them. Thanks so much, Dor.

Heck, here's the third floor fireplace-in-progress. This is the bedroom w/sitting room suite:
