[Fishing] Fishing Template

After doing some reading last night I just found out there are now 120 fishing PS

With that in mind, and the fact I dont have one, what are fishers using these days in their templates? I think mine use to be an archer/bard but being that I have no clue what I was doing with him and found fishing as well as a few other skills on stones, he's like lost now.

I was thinking of trying to put him back together, something like (no 120s on this char, showing his caps):

110 Archery
100 Chiv
100 Fishing (PS eventually)
115 Music
115 Provo
115 Peace
65 Med

I'm guessing that will work. I seem to remember fighting alot of creatures when the chest came up long ago. Is it still like that or did they change things? Of course I could be not even remembering right.

Also, if I do get back into fishing up SOS, do I need to upgrade to High Seas or am I fine with SA? I didn't see anything anywhere that said which expansion the fishing PS came with.

If you are coming back for fishing then upgrading to High Seas is mandatory imo. I am not sure if you can even catch the new fish needed for the 120 if you don't have high seas.

Had an additional thought...

That temp you have sounds like a good one for fishing these days. Alot of the fish are dungeon fish and can require some fighting or peacing to handle. Mine is a bard/thief/fisher and does ok. but only due to peace and stealth.

The chests didn't use to spawn guardians (maybe you were thinking of treasure chests?) so I don't think you will need prov unless you throw a lot of fishing nets. Maybe stone prov and use discord instead? The discord and peace will really help a chiv/archer.

As for stoning provo, how's getting to the fishing spots for the quests? Will just peace/disco be enough or will I use provo more due to more creatures? I haven't been down there yet so no idea what's even down there.

I guess that really depends on how much time you will be spending fishing on a boat and how much time you will spend fishing in dungeons. I was talking about being on a boat and pulling up chests. If you are mainly doing dungeon fishing, its up to you. I have a peace/disco/chiv/archer that does great in dungeons but he also has tactics and anatomy.

This is mine so far.

Fishing 99.5
Mage 70.8 with +10 to make 80.8 book when it's necessary to rez someone.
Med 100
Focus 110
Mysticism 110
Spellweaving 106.8
Stealing 50
Snooping 29.5

It was originally going to be a faction thief and would use burglar's bandanna, jewelry, and shadow dancer leggings, but that has kind of hit the back burner for now. I can fish all day with no problems, he survives really well, I solo Navery with him frequently, and I rarely die against almost any champ.

Not the best template, I'm sure, but it's fine for fishing & on pirate hunts with a tamer friend and his dragon. Current real skills:

110 Anatomy
115 Archery
100.6 Fishing (rising)
99.8 Healing (almost gm)
100 Hiding (love it, won't drop it)
67.8 Magery (will have to lower it as fishing rises)
110 Tactics

I would drop magery and add chivalry to go with your archery, you should be able to find some nice jewelry to help with some of those skills so you can have higher chivalry or even some nice chivalry jewelry. I love having chivalry with my archers and loved it on my old fisherman. I wish that account was still open.

For most my career, my template was

120 Magery
120 Eval
100 (120) Fishing (swapped with inscription when I wasn't fishing)
100 Resist
100 Tactics
100 (80) Med
80 Chivalry
(adding +magery jewelry when equipping a SC MW bow)
Spellbook was my first scrappers I ever made, and is a water ele slayer (over 400 points damage to 1-2 water eles at a time with chain lightning, if inscription on)

With High Seas, I raised Fishing to 120, and reduced Meditation to 80 (hence the numbers in the Parentheses). Amazingly, I was able to assemble a suit with jewelry that was all-70, 100%+ LRC, 40%+ LMC, 45% DCI and decent mana regen, with only having to imbue 1 piece of gear (I later made that 2, by replacing the looted ring with something that allowed me to still have 70 physical when protection was cast) AND including the Pendant of the Magi (which has no resists)! The downside is that I don't have any room for +skill equipment (other than more magery I don't need, on the Scrappers), and that I trade off my +2/+6 FC/FCR for MAgery skill to offset the MAge weapon penalty. (which doesn't hurt much, since I typically cast protection when using mage weapons)

I used a SC Mage Weapon mana leech bow of one form or another.

Having 2 summons tank while I filled the target full of arrows (and the occasional Ebolt/fireball/chain Lightning) had its advantages.

Currently, I'm experimenting with the following template for the fisher instead (same suit).

120 Magery
120 Eval
120 Fishing
100 Inscription
100 Mysticism (actually, still training - at 86.5)
110 Focus
50 Chivalry

I'm liking it so far, but would have liked it more had the white net I tossed last night yielded a Leviathan instead of a Scalis, as I had to call for help to fight the cthulhu wanna-be, and it took the responding guilds that helped (all but one of my guild had all logged just after the shard event last night, and ) almost an hour to finish it, because they had to drag their fully loaded ship from the opposite end of the world to Buc's to help (and the half-dozen that were fighting it while the ship was en route were about the worst possible templates for Scalis fighting, except for killing eels).

I still want to see if I can finally solo Leviathan with this template....

I just returned to UO after many years. I thought I would do something different, fish and boat around this new world a bit to see what has become of it. I am resurrecting one character with these stats to be the Fisherman. What should he drop? He is already 720.

120 Archery
100 Tactics
100 Anatomy
100 Healing
100 Chivalry
100 Hiding
100 Resist Spells

Welcome back!! I would drop hiding and add fishing to GM and then towards 120 as you get powerscrolls. You may be able to get a 120 first but I believe that they are hard to come by because the fishing quests are a PIA and not many do them. The RNG is horrible for them so the powerscrolls are rare. To make room for the extra 20 of fishing once you get the PS, I would probably take healing down since you have Chiv which can heal, cure, and rez. You will want to buy or craft/imbue a nice bow with either the snake slayer or reptile slayer properties for deep sea serpents.

Drop hiding and chivary and take 120 fishing and 80 magery imho
Personally I absolutely hate Magery on an archer. Bows are already underpowered (as compared to other weps imo) as it is and with Magery you would need to tie up one of the crucial spots for SC...

Also losing the buffs Chiv adds in on the warrior side would make the temp even more limited on output damage.

Mate we’re taking about sea serpents and water elementals...
True for now at least... as long as he evades Pirates or just outright never wants to hunt them... but if he eventually wants to get to 120 Fishing and snag all (or some) the Legendary fish trophies he will need something to battle the critters in the dungeons..

My current fishing template is able to handle itself in any dungeon. Then again, it's my main caster with inscription stoned off and Med reduced from 60 to 40 (to make room for 120 Fishing)

With Equipment:
Magery 120
Mysticism 120
Spellweaving 120
Eval Int 120
Focus 120
Fishing 120
Med 40 (more if I use the right crafted fishing pole)

Character has about 400 luck, and max MR, LRC, LMC, 2/4 casting (however, I usually have protection cast, and often go stone form), up to 102 SDI (depending if I grabbed my city bonus and drop the pole to grab a book), and all-70s (75 with stone form) resists even when Protection is cast. Mastery is usually level 3 Weaving, though I've used level 3 and all 3 casting skills.

Thanks for all the guidance! Now I realize I forgot to ask one important question. Now that I have dropped hiding, and worked fishing up to 70, once I fish up treasure chests, do I need lockpicking to open them?

My Fisher template is:

100 Anatomy
120 Fishing
100 Healing
100 Parrying
100 Resist
100 Swordsmanship
100 Tactics

Everything is finished except Healing (88) and Fishing (108).

Thought it would be interesting to have a Gargish fisher. Not sure yet if I want to go High Seas route, but this is what I'm shooting for right now:

Fishing
Magery
Eval Int
Meditation
Mysticism
Imbuing
Resisting Spells

My fisher has :

120 taming
120 animal lore
120 fishing
120 magery
120 eval int
120 med

while fishing i ride a fully trained beetle. I also have the Option for a a fully trained Cu. Dont have to say how well These pets can tank

Here is mine and I would like some help in making this all fit and work. If you know of what items out there exist to boost the skills and you are willing to list them that will also be a great help.

Stealth 120 NO ITEMS I do not want to drop it
Hiding 100
Mysticism 120
Focus 100
Magery 100
Eval 100
Fishing 120

This is for boats AND dungeons. I want to try and keep all those skills just looking for the best configuration. Please help :) Can I get magery to 120 also?

my template is

120 fishing
100 magery
100 eval
110 meditation
100 hiding
100 stealth
30 spiritspeak
30 necromancy

the 30 necro/30 spiritspeak is so I can cast hoard minion to hold shoes then when he gets full I just release him and he vanishes taking the shoes with him and I just summon a new one. I also have a fishing pole that gives 131 luck and +12 necro so im sitting at 42 I fizzle sometimes but usually get a minion within 5 casts. I use the stealth to get into and fish in some of the more dangerous location like doom or labyrinth. Magery seems to take care of anything I come acrossed and its also gives me the ability to cast invis and then stealth from that. I have 30.0 unspent points not sure where to put it maybe just raise spiritspeak or necro a lil more to reduce fizzles.

Wizard's Curio has 10 eval int and other mods and Mystic Memento has 10 focus instead but same mods.
Can only wear on at a time, totem slot.

Obi Di Ense has 10 focus.

Both artifact and crafted spellbooks have skill increases you are interested in.

Crystalline Ring has 20 magery and 20 focus with other mods.

As of 2022, what is the best fishing template?
With fishing pole you cannot fight, only cast spells. So mystic /mage is usual choice.
When training fishing you better have some pets can defend you: Lowland boura (0 taming), Vollem (one from crystal) . Or 2slot beetles (60 taming) to put your fish in +1 slime.
. Good to have goat (eats boots) or slime (eats everything) . Can invis em if have magery.
Other skills are up to you. You can even have inscription on your fisher to use mana you regen.

The Fishing Template can really be anything, as long as you enjoy it and are playing your game & fits your game play style, fishing isnt really a difficult trade to master in UO,
I use 120 suit with max spell resist and a fishing pole with spell channeling & +5 to intel my build is as followed which I have no problems at all with anything related to fishing and do. just my experince not claiming to be a expert.

Eval 120
Fishing 120
Focus 20
Magery 120
Med 120
resist spell 120 I keep arch prot & magic reflect on so stays at 90

I do a lot of dungeon fishing so I went with the following:

Animal lore 120
Taming 120
Vet 120
Fishing 120
Med 120
Magery 120

Seems effective enough, don't have trouble with anything for the most part.
