Facebook owns and anyone who hates it doesn't understand that they're pretty much using Facebook with another name already here on Stratics. (Hint: Facebook is nothing more than a forum with private groups and friends list that more people happen to use)

Do you use google? Do you any search engine, or any of the other ubiquitous web services that compile everything you do and look at? I have a feeling you do, or you wouldn't have made it here.

Anyway, the "some vile reason" is to make money. They mine your data, and then make better targeted ads and sell the interests of your specific demo to market research firms. Nothing explicitly nefarious, not big brother, just capitalism mingling with technology.

Don't get me wrong, I don't use facebook, or like facebook either, but for completely different reasons. I just think people dramatically over react about social networking, and "data collection" because like every site on the web does the same thing. Same as freaking out about using steam. Seemingly just curmudgeonly Luddite tenancies.

Also, if you really want to clean your HD you can do it. It's pretty simple really

Tech savvy would still have a next to impossible time getting anything from our old hard drives. My husband believes that after he wipes them, that judicious use of a hammer is the way to go. He used to take them into work and run a degaussing magnet over them before using the hammer as well. The last old one is a slave in this comp so it didn't get destroyed.

People don't like it because while you're doing that and playing chess online, they're studying you, selling your information to marketing companies, and doing "social experiments" as they call it. Plus there is the added bonus that they get hacked about once a year on average and people's info gets stolen.

Personally, I don't really care if they study me or not, I just don't like the whole website, after about the 5 millionth time someone invited me to play farmville or whatever other crap is on there I got tired of it.

hey now I play dorky Farmville 2 on FB [all the time] except I can not expand my lil farm much cuz I refuse to buy Zinga dollars to do that. If I am gonna blow rl money on any online game I would be playing UO still. lol I never would even BE on FB but all my kids went on it and FB is about the only way I see new pics. of my only 2 grandsons. My kids are all 37-40 yr. olds and they are always on FB soooo I went on it just to keep up with my kids. Now I got my entire neighborhood on it with me lol well the next door neighbors post pics of their dog and me posting pics of my dogs. LOL Its a dorky way we all stay connected. Besides my one kid thinks she is gonna beat me on CANDY CRUSH SAGA, haha no way..I am still a few levels above her. lol Facebook is annoying but it is the entire newer social media outlet easy to figure out, where everyone can keep up with every one else, IF ya bother to friend them. I keep my list of FB friends very short !!! And while FB tries to offer a link to buy this or that that they feel ya may be interested in, it is very simple clk those stupid things perma[OFF] and ya get far far fewer if any of those annoying things hoping ya clk on some websight ya got no interest in at all. And the entire globe is changing, FB is not the only *Tracker* of what all any of us does online or off...our govts. probably got more info on all of us than we even care to know about...welcome to the 1984 orwelliean big brother is watchin us all, anyhow 21century !! lol - nothing "of it" - fox is simply much better known for airing the views of the guns rights people than the other networks, so I would think it might be your favorite almost by definition based on your previous avatar - a wall of guns. I have nothing against sane and law-abiding people having guns but would not vote Fox the best of the networks for other reasons (Bill O'Reilly being one of the reasons, the fact that they are even more biased to the right than the others are to the left being the other). I dislike them all. They're all as much entertainment as serious news., and I'm speaking as somebody who has been in the news business for more than 30 years. Of course, this discussion has nothing to do with UO, and somebody will probably object that it shouldn't be here, but it is - and "what of it"?

No, the fact that its 2017 explains why IRC was shown the door. There are way better programs to use for communications these days, such as Discord. It's IRC, ICQ, Ventrilo and Skype all in one, plus more.

ICQ, a program I stopped using over 12 years ago. Had over 3,000 people on it which took 20 minutes to load, and discovered back in 2006 it was responsible for my UO account getting hacked. I was lucky the hacker only found one shard I was testing and managed to miss the main one. I only found out about the security flaw when I was going through the program one day looking for old messages I saved that for some reason, would no longer load into the program itself and found a huge file.Turns out it was recording everything I did on it, including things I didn't and saw the person who managed to nab my uo.cfg file which was at the time storing pw info before EA put a stop to it. Always made it a point never to share files ever, yet they still found a way. Makes me want to load it up again and say hello to old friends.
