Actually, the last thing Mesanna said was that the people had been chosen, but had not been yet notified due to paperwork, contracts, and other reasons coming up. Therefore it's still entirely likely that the EM choices haven't been notified themselves.

Thing is, is its sort of hard to say decisively one way or another which is a better approach for an event; item-based rewards or the satisfaction of having some extra dynamic in your gameplay. I guess it is similar to whether or not a linear event led by an EM is better than letting players do things at their own pace. Both have arguements for and against and you can see both points of view.

I think items are an important part of events, but as a reward, well, this is where I would say it starts to become a goal - and eventually an expectation - for attending the events. I like the idea of more regular, un-announced events which might or might not have items as a "reward", where the appeal is more from the seemingly random and unpredictable frequency; where non-attendance isnt a big deal because it isnt significant enough an occurance to really matter anyway.

Ideally, EMs would simply be able to go around anywhere, set up a small-scale event of some kind (think along the lines of a prisoner escort/rescue) which maybe only a few players may attend, but they would be able to do this often enough to reach out to lots of different groups of players. It could break routines in peoples playstyle and give that element of dynamic that would remind us that this is a game where anything could happen (or, give that appearance, anyway).

Rewards, or items involved, would be given out when appropriate; items with significant properties simply attract people to events to get those items, rather than have fun at the events; whereas an item with some history behind it, a nice name or something would be a lot more excuseable to be given out - say maybe even just a fairly nice weapon with "ok" mods on that the EM might have made himself earlier from a runic, renamed, and given to a player who helps him in some task or other. The player could then go and show it off to all his m8s and tell some story of what a cool time he just had, as opposed to a predictable, or announced, event where people attend in the hope they might be able to get some "special" item that - regardless of what it even is - will be able to be sold for lots to whoever.

At the end of the day, I love these sorts of items that come about from some special quest or event - although moreso the ones before the EMs were around. I hope they will still be given out but I also hope that the items will either be not significantly valueable for their properties, or will be widely enough available (or, there will be many events with items) to generate outrage by those who dont get them. I have to say though, that making them character-bound or non-tradeable is the wrong way to go totally; the choice to get rid of, trade, sell or do whatever with the items should remain with the player - the hope being that the players who get items will be interested enough to want to keep them (tournament winners, people who solved lots of clues).

I used to love attending the events.
I never even got a sash, but corny as it sounds, the events themselves were the better part.

Running the events, I'm betting is double-edged.
There's the satisfaction of running an event, that people enjoy.
But, on the other hand, there's the people that will prejudge. Based on what they perceived in the past, trashing your efforts.
Yeah I loved attending and even without getting rewards it was something DIFFERENT to do you know?
Sashes I got during various handouts where our EM would hand out sashes to as many people present as he could, so at least everyone could "be a part" of the royal guard and have a fun little toy to play around with.

Can anyone confirm receiving letters of rejection?

I highly doubt it.

It's not usual to notify the unsuccessful candidates until the successful candidates have accepted and signed the contract. That way, if any have changed their minds about accepting, the company has a fall back position of offering the post to a 'runner up'.

You're overlooking what must be the toughest part of running the event, and that's... not being able to participate! :D That's the main reason I don't like to run pencil-n-paper RPGs: because I'd much rather be the one exploring the dungeon or solving the mystery than the one sitting back, watching it unfold, and wondering whether I made it too easy or too hard.

Can't wait until the new mini-events get underway, and I really, really hope that smaller shards get as much love as the bigger ones. Who knows, maybe people will start migrating shards simply because somebody else's world has more creative events...? :) :)

Well the smaller shards are luck in some sense that, they get to know the people who are on the shard and maybe know more about the EM and can tell them what they want and they might be able to work there, were the larger shards its just this and this... maybe...

when do we find out who the new EM's are?
THANK YOU!!!! someone to quote... aww it feels soo good :O

hrmm they have been selected, and have been hinted as to that they already have the papers and are filling/ have filled them out, and/or are waiting still for the last few. Then on Friday there probly will be an anouncement of the EM's names, but not the real name of the person whom is the EM for they do not say company members real names.

Probly Friday... in short...

So -- There you have it.

Apparently, by this nice thumbs up emoticon, all of us who did apply have gotten our answer. You know it occurs to me that most who applied are probably very longtime, old players. Who have paid thousands of dollars into the system and are among the most loyal customers.

You are a customer by choice. Expecting to be chosen to be an EM just because you have spent "thousands of dollars" is unrealistic and a bit childish and seems to lack that "classy"aspect as well.

And since when did $$$ = loyalty? Id hate to have you as a friend IRL.

Probly the average person has paid 1100 dollars thus far from playing the game... this is a range from new to old players so i don't think $$$ id the thing...
i believe it would be on 3 things,
-how they handled the given situation
-The availability of play time.
-The ability to be creative and have seriousness/humour/and all that fun stuff in a short 500 word story

...and when do they start, I wonder?

I'm guessing they'll be announced within the next few weeks (week after this one at the soonest) and actually begin events in the new year.

If my 200 gold bet is right then i would say about the 12th-19th.. but closer to the 12th... since if they are announced in 1 weeks time, they probly have already met the leader/assistant for the shard (if there is one) since wasn't there going to be 2 per shard??? anyways.. then they can get a few days to think of something and get it planned out... a dry run, and it should be ready... bvut who knows well other than the EMs and the GMs and Devs :O

EDIT..
In December.. not jan... that is TOOooOoo long of a wait.

Pretty sure that was the criteria. It's kind of silly to assume it's all vets who "spent thousands of dollars on UO" that would get people chosen heh.

i based that 1100 off 7 years of game play i know people have played more, or less just going with a number near the middle.. lol :D

It is fun to try and sound smart just stating what the people have already said but people haven't bothered to read anything :D

What situation was that?
The one on the application:
Please read the outline of an event below and expand on how you would make it your own:
The Context
Over the past few days, the number of missing crews, sunken or lost ships reports has soared to an unprecedented height. Every tavern has a sailor recounting tales even stranger than usual: whirlpools suddenly forming near their ships, threatening to engulf them; pets entering the affected areas acting erratically; the aquatic fauna fleeing the region in droves; appearance of never seen before sea monsters...

Fishermen and Merchants alike are demanding an investigation. It is not just their trade being threatened, it is their very lives and the safety of Britannia in its entirety.

Duration
It should take the player at least 1 to 2 hours to complete, either in 1 continuous session or spread over a few days.

Format
The event can either be Led entirely by the EM, meaning the event begins when the EM starts it and ends when the EM leaves. Or it can be an Ongoing event where the EM's presence isn't required for players to be taking part in it.

Replay
In the case of a Led event where the EM will role-play a character, your design must take into consideration the need to re-enact the entire quest at different hours over a few days.

In the case of an Ongoing event involving a finale led by the EM, your design must account for players who will be unable to attend so they too get a sense of closure.

Hello Everyone,

I want to thank everyone that has sent in their applications and the great stories I have read (and still reading). I would like to answer a few questions that I am being asked alot.

1. Yes you have to be 18 years old to apply.
2. You will not be able to work on the same shard you play on. (Siege and Europe might be an exception)
3. All the questions have to be answered.
4. You do not have to live in the US to apply.
5. I have been asked alot of questions about the tools that will be available to EM's. Lets cross that bridge when we get to it please.
6. We will have a main EM and a back up EM for each shard. The shard rule applies to both the main and the back up EM.

We will be posting the names when the final decision is made so please start thinking of a good EM name.

Mesanna

i realy hope you know what you do.
point 2.You will not be able to work on the same shard you play on

Well, any player can login to any shard but I highly doubt any EM would completely transfer to a new shard. I bet most of them have been playing for a while and have a lot of friends on the shard they are already playing on. Transfer tokens are a good way to trade, I think it was a good idea to introduce them. It also brings in more money for EA, and the more money the more likely they are to keep the game going!

Ohh my long lost ancestor that i've never heard about left me a fortune of 30 million dollars, but since that is such a huge amount they need my credit card info and and down payment of 6000 dollars to verify it... Oh well... i don't think i deserve it :| that is to much money for one real person to get all at once, presuming they are currently living in middle class :|

I'm willing to bet that there's a NDA attached to the E-mails so those that get them can't go blabbing about it.

nah i meant like rejection emails and receipts.
Given that there were not "yes we got your application" acknowledgments, it would appear they are looking to confirm acceptance from the people who were offered first, if they are going to give formal rejection at all.

(that's ok with me - I hate formal rejections, although if they come with comments, it's always interesting to learn where the resume needs padding)

Yeah I ran into a newbie the other day who said he was from Atlantic transphering over to our shard. He kept asking me about the "History of this shard"

Well being a good sport I told him what I could while staying in character. anyway he asked me where the public moongate was and that i should remember his name because i might be seeing it more at future events???

If our new EMs are so newbish to not even know where the haven moongate is why the heck are they in charge of events when I know several other people that already run player events that this guy wont even hold a candle to.

(could be wrong about the whole thing but I'm 87% sure he was a new EM.. name Kasaven)

Maybe he was a noob wanting to play a new shard? One of the things to consider when choosing shards is the community and shard history where is applies [usually any shard pre-lake austin which has major historical structures]

Speculation is fun.

Indeed. Any shard I would xfer to I like to know if they have a strong history and what type of population they have.
...I know I am going to xfer a character on shards with the best events and the shard they happen on most often. (Which I shouldn't have to much because it'll probably be Atlantic) :D

Have fun. I know for a fact that Oceania had the most frequent events last season - however they were pretty disappointing in terms of rewards and storyline.
