Does throwing give a defense increase like other melee skills?

I know that throwing while wearing a shield gives you a defense decrease of right now 0 I believe as a bug. But I am wondering if I use throwing without a shield will I still get a defense bonus as if I had fencing/swords/mace/archery of the same skill as long as I do not use a shield?
