I tried to set my pickaxe to mine ore and gems, It gave me a message I have not learned to mine gems. I thaught when you hit GM it would let you mine them automaticaly? Please explain!

[Mining] A question about mining

There are two different kind of gems ...
- the rare ones, that got introduced with ML: those can be mined up by any gm miner (but with a low chance)
- the standard/old ones: those can be mined up after reading a mining-for-gems book which can be bought at Ter-Mur

Works nice. After reading the book I strip mined 3 caves(tram) and got 176 norm gems yesterday.
