[UO Herald] Patch Issue

I experienced a similar horror show after starting my XP SP3 Classic install with UOassist, as always. No DOS window appeared, but I am on a ridiculously slow DialUp connection {yes, I really mean it!}. Whatever the technical reasons are for the errors encountered, I don't care because obviously the implementation of this modification to a decade old patching system was done with little consideration for actual Players. I mean for example, they have an HTML window in the original (and new) patcher that still contains a "Valentine's day" message... _that message_ is not updated, even though the entire patching system is about to be remade.

So, on to possible work-arounds:

First, I moved the contents of my UO Classic installation directory to another location.
Second, downloaded the _new_ installation starter UOClassicSetup_7_0_24_0.exe from:

The _new_ install is a "starter", not a full install. It is 17.9 MB in size. So, no big problem even on a slow dialup.

I ran the new install starter and pointed it to my (now empty) original UO classic install location. After it completed, I clicked on the new (startup) icon "Ultima Online Classic Client". -Hourglass- displays for a short time, then disappears and nothing seems to be happening. If you check Task Manager, an instance of uo.exe will be running. I left it alone for quite awhile... like at least 5 minutes. Then, the new patcher window displayed. The patcher showed progress and I let it run until it came to a very large file, at which point I cancelled. {Not, absolutely certain, because this is from memory, so another step may have taken place.}

The point is, this process will initiate a full install of over 1 gig. Therefore, I ended the process. Then, copied back my original install files from the saved location to the original. I allowed the over-writing of "uo.cfg" to preserve my original settings, but skipped over-writing the small number of files the new install program (& patcher) had created or modified.

After restarting UO from the new icon, it proceeded to do a rather rapid file check (less than a minute), therefore I suspect the slow process some are experiencing is due to extensive fragmentation on their hard drive. It is not server load or connection speed, because I am on DialUp, running XP Pro, 4+ year old IBM desktop; my one advantage is a very clean install and defragmented hard drive(s).

The file check completed and the update of 443 megs began. After running overnight, the process is 20% completed. Yes, it will take TWO DAYS/48 HOURS at my location!

NOTE: this patching process updates or adds one file at a time. It will not save its progress. If the 87 meg file download is interrupted (for example), that file will restart downloading from byte #1.

I am reasonably confident that if this "Update" is started from the new install starter (as described), the result will be a fully functioning UO Classic. Of course in my case, I'll have to wait another 36 hours to find out. :(

Just a side note... my physical location is on the Potomac River, just "downstream" from Mythic's Northern Virginia headquarters, but a world away in terms of broadband options. Such irony... o_O

i believe so yes afaik you need uoasist to be tracked by uoc and uoam.

So just tick the use ec maps in the uoc options and all should be fine

I re installed with the new installer Loneswan linked above. Everything seems to be working right so far. thnx! for the link Loneswan.

Just to verify, Resuming Download has been disabled on this patch/conversion? I know in the past, it's taken a couple minutes to 'catch up', but then jumped to where it left off.

I don't know about the classic client, but my enhanced client patch dl got interrupted last night due to internet connection loss and when my connection came back I was about to do the usual "catch up" we are used to.
It appears some folks are having more of an issue than others with the classic client.

When you run UOA, then the other Bioware bullcrap patch screen shows up at the same time and then after 30mins or 1 min, it will say error...

Anyways, so they killed UOAM in this patch and going to soon kill factions, what else they gonna kill in this ONE patch?

Maybe they have too many subscribers that they want to kick some out?

What's the point of popping up another Bioware blah blah bullcrap uppatch screen? Is this to detect all kinds of 3rd party programs being used? If it is, I will make 10 thumbs up!

But if it's not, please just give back our old patch and forget about this bullcrap so that we could get the UOAM to work again..

UOAM works fine - running it just fine np as we speak with the most recent client

@ Barania: check properties on your icon to see where they are pointing. I didn't get any log folders - look inside and see what's in there, let us know.

@Basara, Patching, itself, on my fully patched box takes ~1min until the "Play" button lights up - (starting uo.exe)

Any help appreciated. I have disks for both AOS and LBR and if it's too complicated I might just uninstall and start from scratch - patches with highest speed Charter couldn't take too long. Thanks for any feedback - I have 3 days off starting in the morning and don't want to mess around with this for any length of time.

This is the checksum problem that Bleak is looking into. It is NOT a patch.

EC runs a similar checksum each time it starts up, but that only takes 2 - 3 seconds. For some reason the CC checksum is taking much, much longer.

After multiple attempts over 16 hours and 170MB transferred with no connection errors reported,
the archive for soundLegacyMUL.uop (101MB) reached its max error count (probably 3 attempts per
session; rebooted/reconnected once, in between) and moved on. The Bioware Patcher successfully
downloaded a 1745KB archive and finally reached "map0LegacyMUL.uop", which is the -missing- file
noted in a start-up error message.

[It failed on two tries to get this ~16.6MB file. Last failure was at ~15MB. Now on the 3rd, and
I assume final attempt before skipping to next archive in list.]

Observing the operation of the "Bioware Patcher" application, it runs the process "UO.bin".
UO.bin reserves ~26MB of memory upon starting and returns to this threshold after an archive is
downloaded and processed. If a file is not present in the user's installation directory, it
obviously must be ADDED. This means an archive (a compressed version of the complete/FULL file)
must be downloaded. This patcher DOES NOT WRITE TO DISK. It has no apparent ability to recover
from a transmission error, such as a server side interruption or delayed request. Because it
depends on writing to memory, there may be an error in that process which also would cause a
restart of the download. Restarting the download from byte #1, up to the Max Error Count of
retries, is the only recovery method that I have witnessed.

If you have seen the patcher process complete, then restarted and watched the patcher download
another file(s), that probably means that the patcher was unable to retrieve after multiple
attempts on the first go and is now trying again to complete the patching process. This would seem
to be particularly likely with a massive archive, such as "soundLegacyMUL.uop" at 101MB. Accepting
I am only an amateur; my best guess is that a large file being -served- to multiple clients at the
same time... because it is a LARGE file and takes longer to complete the download
request/process... makes the probability of an error rather high.

Writing to a TEMP file/location on the physical drive would appear to be a much more reliable
method. Most of the download agents and updaters I have worked with, including Ultima's previous
patcher used this routine. It allows restarting after stopping (for whatever reason) without
losing any data which has already been successfully downloaded. I guess gigabytes of wasted data
throughput is of no consequence for large commercial enterprises, like EA/Bioware/Mythic?

As far as the Players' experience with this(patching process)... I won't bother to state the
obvious.

I will add this suggestion: make the archives available on a server that allows public access
and therefore download with any download agent. Use an open source archiver{to answer a response
such as: "we use a proprietary compression method and our licensing does not allow public use"}.

I would also ask that large archives, such as over 15MB size, be uploaded in advance of final
release("live date"), so that Players without wired broadband connections would have an
opportunity to retrieve them before they _had to have them_ to get in the game. However, I realize
that this would be asking too much.

See my earlier post (#51) in this thread for details on how to update using the _new_ install starter. The disks you mention are ancient history and certainly no longer appropriate options for this new patching process.

The checksum issue has been resolved. It will only occur once next time you start the patcher.

"map0LegacyMUL.uop"

I think this is one of the files occasionally indicated in the phantom "update" that isn't needed with the client AND Patcher starting up simultaneously with UOAssist (with starting without UOA showing no updates needed).

By any chance is this what is going on?

My first post.

I have had problems with the new patch system also. I am not running any additional addons.

It took a few tries to sucessfully run the patcher. my problem was; It would run for 10 mins or so then stop.

My concern is that the additional patcher process may cause some problems on the local computer. i myself have uninstalled UO for now.

Has anyone experienced boot failures or system crashes?

Win7 64 here, i ran uopatch.exe and the patcher (old?) downloaded until 7.0.24.2 then the patcher said that there was no more patches. I hit "ok".. then nothing happened.
I did wait a couple mins.. nothing there, no uo processes on the task manager.

I see a new "logs" folder, so now each time i hit uopatch.exe again i got this on the logs\patcher.031412.log

Anyone have any idea? I cant even ping patch.eamythic.com and I got the 'map0legacyMUL.uop' error when i execute client.exe

I had to wait quite some time on my laptop between "ok" and having a dos prompt come up to download all the new map junk.

Win7 64 here, i ran uopatch.exe and the patcher (old?) downloaded until 7.0.24.2 then the patcher said that there was no more patches. I hit "ok".. then nothing happened.
I did wait a couple mins.. nothing there, no uo processes on the task manager.

I see a new "logs" folder, so now each time i hit uopatch.exe again i got this on the logs\patcher.031412.log

If your client was patched to 7.0.24.2, you should run the uo.exe instead of uopatch.exe to get the lastest update.
If you have not patched to 7.0.24.3 from 7.0.24.2 than uopatch.exe should no longer exist as well which means your 7.0.24.2 patch was not complete.

I saw a dos prompt for less than a second because it automatically dissapeared. I really wait like 10+ mins, nothing happened.

If your client was patched to 7.0.24.2, you should run the uo.exe instead of uopatch.exe to get the lastest update.
If you have not patched to 7.0.24.3 from 7.0.24.2 than uopatch.exe should no longer exist as well which means your 7.0.24.2 patch was not complete.
You're right, uopatch.exe should no longer exist but i found a uopatch.bin that i renamed to .exe and thats what i was trying to run. Every time i ran it, another uopatch.bin were created. Anyway, running uo.exe did nothing. No new processes on the task manager, nothing.

Now.. i just thought the best to do was uninstalling and installing the classic client again, so Ive downloaded it from http://web.cdn.eamythic.com/us/uo/installers/20120309/UOClassicSetup_7_0_24_0.exe

Then I uninstalled my classic client, then i removed the files that the uninstaller didnt removed from my classic client folder and then i ran UOClassicSetup_7_0_24_0.exe (using 'run as a administrator').
Ive selected "C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Ultima Online Classic" as the folder for the classic client and inside that folder i see a "UO.exe" and a couple other files. Ok, not so much to decide here to I ran "uo.exe" and waited.. no dos prompt box or anything but i started to see new files on the folder so I let the ghost process to do their work. After a few seconds, i got an error window:

EDIT: Im doing this exact thing (uninstalling uo, installing from UOClassicSetup_7_0_24_0.exe) on a XP sp3 that I have running on a windows xp mode and seems to work ok. Patch is running and it seems that will download about 1gb

EDIT2: Ok nevermind, i just "run as a admin" the uo.exe and i see the patch window now :cursing:

How to get UOAM to work correctly again? Now Felucca and Trammel is showing black screen.

I am on XP.

I redirect the client location still the same... please help... thanks.

I've been working on it all night and got it all back up and working - it's no simple task though :)

lemme package it up a bit better and then i'll have something to post

How did you get UOAM to load maps correctly after the patch ?

I 'think' what they did was put a back-up copy of the 'old' maps in the new directory, it was in one of the UOAM threads

I've still got a UOPatch.exe sitting in my UO folder and my client is on 7.0.24.3. And I didn't get any patch errors.
Same here... uopatch.bin, and uopatch.exe, both the same size
I also have them in Win~/Prefetch, (2) patch.exe's of different sizes, and a .bin of a third size

I clear the Prefetch now and then, am I gonna error out if i dump instances of 'patch.exe', and flush Prefetch? now I'm worried
