An in-game casino? I think its a case of too little too late.

Most of the Ultima Games had a casino in Buccaneer's Den. In fact, it was one of the only reasons to even GO to Bucky's Den. When UO started I was surprised to see the absence of the trademark roulette and rat race bettting.

In fact, I even ran a casino for a short period of time, with lockdowns and accepting gold to roll three sets of dice behind the counter (that only I could reach, making sure nobody could spam it).

Needless to say, this little venture quickly turned to Griefing City. Because I forgot that most people going into a casino are looking to get all the money, and not above cheating or exploitingto get it. The Trinsic Swamp Casino shortly thereafter closed its doors when I realized that such an establishment really can't be run by players for players, no matter how good and fair intentions are.

Then there was an odd trend of a Vendor Lottery, where there allegedly was a high-ticket item in a wooden box, along with 30 other locked boxes, all of which you could buy for 500,000. I always thought this was incredibly dumb -- I could EASILY just put nothing but blanks up there, and for all you know, some other lucky stiff got the grand prize. Meanwhile, I get 15 million for preying on gullible players. Don't get me wrong, I am sure there were several of these lottery vendors who were on the up and up, but it's just too easy to cheat.

So, now we will have a game-run casino, which again, I have come to think is the only way gambling can exist in an MMORPG and be equitable for all. Well, as equitable as gambling can get at least.

But now? The Gold Dupe Crisis that happened nearly a decade ago has STILL annihilated the economy in this game. It has never been fixed, to the point where any worthwhile item in the game starts bidding in the millions -- an amount rather difficult to accumulate in the game itself by monster payouts. While the poverty window in the game itself (based on its own economy) is relatively easy to escape, the poverty window of the player base as a whole is light years beyond. And because of that, money is pretty much irrelevant for the most part, unless you are dealing with trading with other players for high-ticket items.

So why have a casino? Given the fact I can make 3,000k in a few moments doing a treasure map with relative ease, I'm not going to be terribly interested in playing a 50-gold-cap roulette game.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to the idea. In the end it'll add another option to while time away in the game. But remember when we got Majhong in game?? Did ANYONE play it? And most of all, did anyone even ask for it? I just wanna hear what it's gonna add to the game at this point.

And again, the biggest flub for this idea is the payout and bet caps. If they aren't sufficiently high to approach the idea that you can in fact get rich (by the playerbase standards) in a lucky night, this idea is gonna crash and burn.

Please tell us that you realize the casino and pandas were a poorly timed April Fools joke....

The casino pictured is just to the west of the Abyss entrance on fire island on Chesy
In my feeble defense, I would again point out that most Ultima games DID have Casinos. But then, they say that the most devious rumors are the plausible ones.

But yeah, hook line and sinker.

Well now I realize the pandas were a joke which I hope SOMEONE thought funny because I didn't. But the casino... was that ever clarified?

Since I work in a Vegas casino slots department, maybe the Devs could hire me as a consultant. ;)

Maybe then they won't take a potentially good idea and muck it up like they usually do, by doing something like setting the payback percentage too low so no one would be willing to play. Or so high that it doesn't perform as any kind of a goldsink.

No but really, what they should do is give we the player-base the tools we need to run our own legitimate in-game casinos.

If it's still locked up tight, maybe it was just built to add believably to the Fools joke?

We're talkin the game that removed bounty hunting so they could lower the rating to "Teen" and market to kids , you really think they'd add a casino after that...I mean, they might lose the massive number of young children they drew to this game by sacrificing a feature everyone loved!

Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean Online has gambling, so there really isn't a reason UO couldn't add it.

Aside from the fact I think we'd all appreciate the Devs working on fixing everything Pub 75 borked instead...
