Oceanians Unite - respond if you love Oceania

Oceania players love their shard, but over the last couple of months we have experiened massive lag. Then it was fixed, now it is laggy again.

In an in game conversation today, some one said they had done a trace, and the trace ends up with a server somewhere near the US, not Sydney. Now, I don't know much about that, but given I move on Oceania like I would ordinarily on Pac, Atl etc, this seems to make sense.

I have been checking my ping and I am pinging at 170 and some people have said they are pinging at 250. This is definately not normal.

Please, no flamers. Oceania players are very loyal (and in no way am I saying other players are not). I just don't want to see a time when I can no longer play the game I have played for years - nor lose the friendships I have made over those years.

I'm not prepared to move my accounts to another shard and I do not believe I should have to.

If you love Oceania, and want to see it returned to its former glory, please respond and show your support.

Solidarity in numbers - and maybe we will be taken seriously. Separately, we have no hope.

Thanks for your time.

I think you have missed the main point Fayled Dreams.....

Whether we have been "moved" to the USA or not the lag is pretty poor. I used to play on Lake Superior many years ago and moved to Oceania when we first got our "Own shard". At the time it meant starting over completely....there were no transfers then of chars or skills! And now after all that hard work it seems Lake Superior is better than here most of the time. However for us in Australia that is still too slow to play....it is so bad that death by chicken attack is possible!

What we don't want to do is to move again, Oceania is small but it is a good shard with good people. If the lag has been good for all these years surely the problem can be fixed....

Please let us know UO Team...Is the problem still being worked on??

How freaky is this.
I ping 23ms on the Oceania shard.
I made a noob chr and I run non stop with 0 latency
I'm in Los Angeles.
Baja pings 63ms. That used to be the shard closest to me when I started playing.

I was tracing Oceania a couple weeks ago when people were complaining of lag and the trace was ending near Sydney. Now it's ending somewhere else completely with no sign of having gone anywhere near Australia.

How much you want to bet the recent "hardware upgrade" was some sort of cost-cutting measure that included relocating Oceania?

yep if someone in LA is getting 23 ping the server is moved, temp or other wise

My friend just did a ping from Kansas, he went from 340ms to 120ms. I'm kind of surprised none of the OC folks are posting, or maybe there isn't enough of them around anymore.

I live in Australia, today Im pinging 187ms to Oceania. My ping to Pacific is 187ms. Pretty much sums it up - doesnt it?

Thanks for the heads up powers that be - guess you were hoping players wouldn't figure out what you had done.

If you really want to kill off Oceania, just delete it from the shard list. Is this how you fix the problem of the last lot of lag we had - move the server? Probably thought we wouldn't even notice the difference.

Oceanians are pretty straight up, we'd take it better if you said - hey guys, we don't want your shard there anymore so we are moving it to make it unplayable for you because we don't value either you or your money as customers.

Ultimately, that is the message we are receiving. If that isn't the intention, how about you let us know. Surely communication isn't too much to ask for.

If it stays the same I won't be moving shards, i'll just end subscription on all of my accounts and bin the accumulated history of UO and Oceania.

To be fair, how many Aussie players do you think they really have?
Should that make a difference? Don't Aussie, NZ players have the same customer rights as players in the US or anywhere else?

It is a fundamental customer service principle - give your customers the best service you can for their money. If that is the case, Oceania players should receive a reduced rate for game play based on lack of customer service and poor performance of a product that has now become inferior.

Pretty sure if that happened, other players would take issue with that, and rightly so.

Would hurt like a b*tch to cancel subscription on my accounts as UO is my only vice, but the closest pinging shards are Asian. Language challenges make playing on those shards difficult and even then, the ping is not that different to what I have now to Oceania.

Ultimately, like any customer it comes down to, can't play - wont pay. Pretty sure I won't be the only person who feels that way.

Hi All

When the all the lag, packet loss and frustration started some time before christmas (or half a lifetime ago it feels) I looked at the connection list of my router and determined that my partner Moons computer was connected to 159.153.189.13, which even at the time of writing this post traces to Equinix in Botany, Sydney. I noted considerable packet loss from the Equinix gateway onwards and considered this to be a contributer if not the cause of the problems we had at the time.

Performing the same test now shows the enchanting Moonflower now connecting to 65.216.123.27 and a trace to that address ends up well and truly in the US.

To summarize the server has indeed been relocated from Australia to the United States. Brothers and sisters Mythic has forsaken us, they have bestowed on us their faithful followers who have broadband pings of no less than 188ms. Our country cousins who may only have dialup internet must be enduring pings of no less than 350ms.

Good people at Mythic/EA, if Equinix cannot fullfill your needs consider AAPT as an alternative that is affordable, reliable and provides good clean bandwidth.

But please, please dont leave us dedicated players, many with multiple accounts and dozens of charactors that we have trained and developed standing high and dry with a server we can no longer play on.

I could not of said it better Deneya.

Once upon a time the Australian's and New Zealander's had a Server in Syney Australia, Now the Oceania server is in the USA.

So now that the Aussie's and Kiwi's have been put to pasture and are no longer Able to play UO as we once did.

Are there Any New Shards Being Created for Us Aussie's and Kiwi's Players to play on like we once used to have or has our time playing UO ceased to exist.???

UO could have informed the people on Oceania that the shard was re-located to the USA, I guess we dont count anymore as people or players.

So thx for killing UO in Australia and New Zealand.

Maybe there is not enough of you to cover the cost of running the server in oz, would make perfect sence to eliminate it or loose money. No company is going to listern to there customers or even there staff if it means there loosing money.

Thats why in the recession so many people lost there jobs, the company isnt going to listern to them all cry "but i need my job to buy food"

EA is a company and will work in just the same way, so they loose 10 peoples subscription but save double that not running the server anymore. DO you honestly think they care?? Its a business so all they think about is $$$ £££ $$$

Well, the possibility that the current machine is a simply there to give us something to play on while the equipment that is hopefully still in Sydney is being moved to a new home is one that cant be discounted.

If you read the terms and conditions of use for UO you will undoubtably find clauses covering the powers that be from retribution for all manner of wonders from unavailability of service to its discontinuation. The phrase "without notice" will be in there somewhere tooo... many times no doubt....

So Has the Oceania Server been moved to the US?

is this just temporary while you fix the "Hardware" in Australia?

Or is it time to close 3 UO accounts as you can not play UO competitively on a ping over 80 (i only play for Pvp)

Well, as someone mentioned its all about dollars and cents. I worked for a local ISP for many years and helped it grow to the point where its owners sold it at a significant profit.

Not many people realise in Oz how expensive bandwidth is, of course the more you buy the less you pay per mbs. The ISP I worked for paid about $500 per 1 megabit / second bandwidth and $1200 for a full rack in a telehousing centre (per month). I always had to laugh at people who would complain that they couldnt get a completely unlimited unthrottled 24mbs ADSL2 connection and didnt get it that such an internet connection would effectively cost the ISP about $12k a month in bandwidth alone simply to download their porn and pirated movies..... this is why ISP's go broke or get rid of the big downloaders.

So if one person playing UO uses about 3k/sec then for every 30 players or so online EA needs to pay for 1mbs of bandwidth. Even with just a meg of bandwidth there needs to be at lease 130 active accounts on Oceania to cover the basic costs of 1mbs and equipment rack space.

But if there are 130 players on all at once (ok, so its unlikely) they are going to need more like 4mbs of bandwidth.... See how this can start to add up?

The lag is beyond a joke, I have guild members about to give up the game because there is simply no way they can play.

I also see no point in paying for a game I can not play which sucks as I purchased 6month subscriptions so its money I am going to have to waste as I can not play.

I want to play I have even been doing my best to boost the shard and to promote it and events on other forums and to other people trying to encourage shard growth....well i guess the shard may now very well grow with American players but those of us actually in Oceania will no longer be able to play at all.

As you’re aware, we’ve been making plans to upgrade hardware over the last few months, which included needing to move servers out of our Australia facility.

I alluded to the fact in the end of December producer’s update that we were in Japan to take a look at how to better connect that hemisphere, but Australia has been increasingly tricky. We ran some investigations but did not expect pings to be as bad as they are.

We will keep investigating solving the problem of Oceania and its location and pingtimes.

I would request players try, as a test, to connect to other servers in your region and let us know how you’re doing.

Cannot believe this. One of the main features of UO was the local server support. Something no other MMO has bothered to do for Oceania.

And just like Warhammer Online, Mythic has screwed us by removing the server. In this case they didn't even have the courage to say so.

If this is some sort of temporary move, then ignore me. Otherwise I'll be cancelling my 11 year account on Oceania and adding Mythic as the 2nd blacklisted company right next to NCSoft (for their work with Tabula Rasa's cancellation).

Extremely dissappointed. Ruined a dream that has lasted for so long.

There are enough empty American shards, why depopulate Oceania and give them yet another?

And they request we try other servers in our region?!?!?! There is none, they took it away!

Not really. Because they still get their $12.99 worth, or however much the subscription is. But they are, now paying close to parody on the server, where as before they were paying 80 cents to every dollar. Correct me if i am wrong here, but they are losing around 20% there.

You are right, assuming the servers stay in the US and the folks in Australia continue to pay. What EA has not thought thru, is that many, if not most of the Australian players will cancel their accounts, resulting a much larger loss for EA, on that server.

I know I sure a heck would not pay to play UO, if the best ping I could get was around 200, far too laggy. :(

Right now we are doing our best to solve some of the lag and downtimes for our more remote servers. (Remote means those not handled from the West or East Coast). Specifically for Wakoku and Oceania we have had some consistently dedicated net engineers working to solve the problems with lag and downtime. We will keep you updated through the holidays, as we want you to enjoy all the work we put into the most recent publish.

I have 5 accounts and playing is impossible now. I remember the days before Oceania was made and how frustrating playing was, the only thing that kept me going was the fact that a local server was being sorted, we all waited with anticipation that things would get better. As far as Cal being a professional BULL**** artist. Well of course he is!

He is a United States Air Force Academy grad. and former Officer.

Now there are three things ALL military officers are 100% proficent at: shifting blame whenever possible, covering up, and BSing.

I love and support our troops 100%, but I am a realist..and I've had enough
family in the military to know the REAL story.

Looks like ole Cal's just putting that training to good use! Maybe he considered the server move "need to know" information....and apparently nobody but he needed to know! :gee:

I say we in the US should show solidarity and support for our Ozzie and Kiwi players by boycotting UO for a month. That should scare the beejeebers out them! Frustrating, logged on today after a couple of days rest, (due to lag issues, and increasing lack of enjoyment due to only realy being able to craft safely) then hear its pretty much worse. Im pinging 250 upward, lake Austin and a couple of others are 150s, used to be around 6-10 for most of the past 10 years. and before that, well, Im now comparing to 56k modem when I started more than 12 years ago.
Ive read most of this thread now, and thanks for your support Yanks! But some things mentioned wont work for me, like a discount, not much point, that means we can pay less if we would like to stay like this. No, just some answers as to when we can really expect to get back to normal, or if this is going to be normal, that is, are we really now another US shard, I need to know so I can not keep dragging this out, and can bring it to an end and cancel my 3 accounts and decide how I can somehow enjoy the community Ive known on Oceania for so long in some other format.

Myself and people i play with have 2 or 3 each. totalling around 9. Issac has god knows how many :)

Also, i think we are beating a dead horse atm. It is the middle of the weekend in the US, no one from EA/Mytic/Bioware will even think about Oceania :bdh:

I would like to thank the powers that be making my decision to quit UO alot more easier... This lag issue is another issue that has force me to leave UO and I am now counting the days of the release of Diablio 3.

At lease Blizzard is willing to look after all paying customers in NON USA or Asian shards...

UO was a great game before they continiously continued to F&#k with game play.. and continiuously fails on marketing a game compared to other online games...

The jedisith are no more....

Are you sure???? Is that why the Oceania based servers for WoW are in the US? They didnt want to pay to upgrade the infrastructure over here to host the server...
